Buddy23Lee: /* Off-hand punch */ -that

version017

The Unarmed Combat skill determines the effectiveness of all attacks made with your character's fists (or tentacles in the case of octopodes), increasing the damage, accuracy, and speed of your unarmed attacks. Although there are many non-punch auxiliary attacks you can make with the rest of your body, these are not affected by the UC skill whatsoever. Training this skill is only advisable if you intend to engage in melee while unarmed or while leaving your off-hand empty.

For many species, fighting without a weapon is not a very appealing prospect. Leaving your weapon and/or shield slot open means that you cannot take advantage of weapon brands, miss out on the defensive value of a shield, and have two fewer slots for wielding artifacts that may provide useful resistances or other bonuses. However, unarmed combat allows for some of the fastest attacks in the game, deals competitive damage to weapon wielders at high skill levels, and allows you to take advantage of the many Transmutations spells which grant you powerful unarmed capabilities. Also, some species have natural aptitudes or innate mutations that make unarmed combat a much more tempting choice.

skill aptitudes

Attack Delay
Unarmed combat specialists are capable of making some of the fastest attacks in the game, on par with the speed of most short blades wielders. Couple this with the fact that UC attacks have a much higher base damage than any short blade, and you can see why they're capable of doing very significant amounts of damage very quickly. However, it requires much more Unarmed Combat skill to reach maximum attack speed than it does for a weapon fighter to reach their maximum. Bear in mind that this only applies to main-hand punches; auxiliary offhand punches occur along with your main hand attacks.

Bonuses From Skill
Weapon fighters gain a 0.1 point reduction to their attack delay for every 2 levels they have in their appropriate weapon skill, allowing them to reach maximum weapon speed by the mid-game in most cases. Unarmed Combat uses a different formula, however; your attack delay is reduced by 0.1 for roughly every 5.4 skill levels, reaching a delay of 0.5 at UC skill 27. Fortunately, unarmed combat is also much faster than fighting with most weapons by default, so they still enjoy fairly quick attacks throughout the game.

Other Factors
Characters in bat form receive a special bonus to unarmed combat, making attacks in 60% of the normal time (though at a significant penalty to damage). Other effects that can influence attack speed (such as Haste, Slow, Statue Form, etc.) apply as normal, with a hardcoded limit at 3 which you cannot exceed.

Final Calculation
Finally, your attack delay can never be a fraction of the decimal place of an aut. If your calculated speed falls between two decimal place numbers, the game will round up or down based on the remainder (0.72 would have a 20% chance of being rounded to 0.8 and an 80% chance of being 0.7).

Base Damage
The base damage of your primary unarmed combat attack is determined through the following factors:

Condition || Damage || Special
Porcupine Form || 3 || -
Vampire Bat Form || 2 || 60% Attack delay
Spider Form || 5 || Venom
Tree Form || 12 || -
Blade Hands || 8 + (STR + DEX) / 3 || -
Statue Form || 9 + STR / 2 || 150% attack delay
Ghoul, Felid || 5 || Light bleeding
Claws mutation || +2 × Claws ranks || Wearing gloves negates this
Other || 3 || -

Your base damage is then increased by your unarmed combat skill level (divided by 5 when in Bat Form). This base damage is then further modified by your strength, dexterity, Fighting skill, and other factors. A value is randomly selected between 1 and the final calculated damage, and the target's AC is applied against it.

Off-hand punch
Offhand punches are significantly less powerful, using the following calculation:

Condition || Damage || Special
Offhand Punch || 5 + (UC / 3) +(1d3 × Claws ranks) or +(6 if Blade Hands) || Wearing any shield negates this

Octopodes get tentacle slaps instead of offhand punches, and may still make tentacle slaps while wearing a shield, making it generally best for unarmed octopodes to use a shield. Indeed, regardless of which items are equipped, octopodes are never denied this off-hand tentacle slap attack. For all other species however, the off-hand punch is negated not only by the wearing of a shield, but also the wielding of two-handed weapons, making this particular use of a unarmed combat skill a viable long-term strategy only if one is to remain limited to one-handed weaponry.

History
Prior to 0.17, unarmed combat attack delay was penalized by shields and armour.

In earlier versions of Crawl, Unarmed Combat improved the performance of your non-punch auxiliary attacks, giving all melee fighters a reason to train it.
Therefore, don't touch the skill unless you plan on boxing your opponents. --MoogleDan 15:32, 3 July 2013 (CEST)
::Okay, thanks. Do you think that auxiliary attacks are of no concern and of constantly the same damage output? -- Bwijn 16:05, 3 July 2013 (CEST)
:::Not at all! Auxiliary attacks have their uses even if the damage is light and rarely ever increases. Claws inflict bleeding, headbutts slightly slow the enemy, hooves penetrate , and they all inflict damage. Any species with auxiliary attacks is better off in melee than any species without them, all other things equal. They're like a free slaying bonus. --MoogleDan 17:23, 3 July 2013 (CEST)
Off-hand punch w/two-handed weapon
Is it still the case that only shield-wearing negates an off-hand punch? I mean, wielding two-handed weapons still permit that attack, no? Buddy23Lee (talk) 16:50, 18 May 2016 (CEST)

Innate Abilities
Humans have no innate abilities or drawbacks. If they want special powers, they must turn to mutations, magic, or the gods.

Humans have a base Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity of 8 (before Background modifiers).

Preferred Backgrounds
*Zealots: Berserker
*Mages: Conjurer, Necromancer, Fire Elementalist, Ice Elementalist

Level Bonuses
*+1 to a random stat every 4th level.
*Average HP.
*Average MP.
*+3 magic resistance per level.

Starting Skills and Equipment
Humans receive the skills and equipment listed for their background.

Difficulty of Play
Moderate

Humans are not a difficult species thanks to their fast experience gain and their balanced, but overall good, aptitudes and stats. However, for better or for worse, Humans lack the specialization of other species, which means that another species can often outperform them in a given background, even if that species is much worse than a Human outside of its niche. (For example, Minotaurs are tougher and more skilled than Humans in melee combat, even though they perform much worse than Humans at spellcasting.)

Human

Strategy
'Item-centric' versus 'aptitude-centric' strategy
The opposite of a deep elf coming across a suit of crystal plate armor, or a minotaur chancing upon a necronomicon, being almost entirely 'average' in skill aptitudes ensures that virtually no item will be practically unusable to a human character due to comically bad aptitudes. This versatility allows for a more 'item-based' play style, which, in a game like Dungeon Crawl - where you're almost guaranteed to chance across at least a few incredibly powerful items, but not necessarily ones that match your character's best skills - can provide for a huge asset.

One way to capitalize on this, is to keep your human character from becoming too focused on any one particular strategy (at least early on). Remain ready to make some quick, mid-course changes depending almost entirely upon what you find. By maintaining a particularly adaptable play style, you can make your aptitude 'averageness' into an overall strength, rather than a weakness to be overcome.

Jack-of-all-trades
In a similar vein to the above, humans are well-suited to a generalist, rather than specialist, play style. Given that human beings lack any and all innate special abilities, (with all such powers needing to be acquired through diligent adventuring), it may be advantageous to play to this more 'jack-of-all-trades' style, rather than one of preplanned specialization. As just one simple example, with equal ability to perform melee, ranged, and spells, humans are well-suited to dabble in all three. Staying well-rounded in such ways might not only help round out weaknesses, but also provide you an answer for virtually any monster situation you come across. Don't worry - you'll still be in a fine position to make those significant skill investments in any particular areas or skills dependent upon what external motivation you eventually find.

Extra bonus for discretion
Exercising discretion in dungeon crawl (i.e. not immediately attacking everything you first encounter) is one of the most fundamental axioms in character survival. Yet, this arguably provides even more advantage for a human character, as they are among the very fastest of species in gaining experience levels. This means that (all things being equal) in the same period of time, human characters will come back to a previously avoided situation with more hit points, magic points, even magic resistance, which is particularly important for dealing with some banishing unique monsters. So when you encounter something particularly dangerous, strongly consider walking the other way for a while. You might well come back a level or two higher than you first expected!

version016
The benchmark species, against which others are compared, humans play a major, though somewhat inconspicuous role in the far-flung realms of Dungeon Crawl. Aside from a somewhat increased presence as specialized guardians of the Vaults, humans tend to be scattered widely across dungeon and its branches, arriving most often as unique, individually named monsters, rather than as generic types - they are arguably the one species best represented in this way.

The following is a list of humans appearing as monsters in all their various incarnations across Dungeon Crawl:

Generic humans
Human (monster) - Occasionally found tending sheep, warming by fires, and generally eking out a meager existence in the dungeon.

Generic human variants
: - All manner of deformed and sickly humans (and other species) can be found in Cigotuvi's Fleshworks.

: - Ghostly human monks which spawn within Wucad Mu's Monastery.

Human types
Wizard (monster) - These curious magic-users possess an eclectic spell-set, replete with dangerous conjurations.

Necromancer (monster) - Akin to the wizard, but with a focus on death magic.

Death knight (monster) - Warrior-priests of the dark god Yredelemnul.

Master elementalist - Exceptional mages which possess spells from all four elements.

Hell knight - Powerful warriors, often found together, employing the very forces of hell itself.

Slave - Held in Pikel's thrall, these pathetic figures remain a threat to low-level characters.

Vault guardians
Vault guard- Plentiful lumbering oafs with heavy weapons and sturdy armour.

Ironbrand convoker- Recalls and buffs enemy units from elsewhere on the floor.

Ironheart preserver- Soaks partial damage for other enemies, effectively doubling their HP until the preserver dies.

Vault sentinel- Wakes up nearby enemies, afflicts you with Sentinel's Mark, often has a crossbow.

Vault warden- Can open or seal shut doors and stairs around you, forcing you to kill him to escape.

Unique humans
Donald - A mid-game adventurer, at home in water; he possesses a rare shield of reflection.

Edmund - A weaker, younger brother to Sigmund, who focuses entirely on melee.

Erica - An adventuress, found in the mid-game; hydra-slayers everywhere covet her flaming blade.

Eustachio - A mustached summoner, found early in the game.

Frances - A duchess, skilled at melee; she wields demonic powers and can summon the same.

Harold - A middle-aged bounty-hunter, nearing retirement, but with a few tricks up his sleeve.

Jessica - A low-level spellcaster who appears in the very early dungeon, preying on the weak.

Joseph - A mercenary, who can hit hard with his staff and sling.

Margery - A dragon slaying, fire elementalist, in the service of hell itself.

Maud - A female warrior known as much for her weaponry as anything else.

Maurice - A sly thief, particularly exceptional with his unique steal attack flavour.

Nikola - A mad scientist, frightfully gifted with brandishing electric forces.

Norris - A cultist armed with brain and brawn, Norris charges headlong into death.

Psyche - A winsome but unstable magess, Psyche comes with a mixed bag of spells and a nasty dagger.

Sigmund - An older, more dangerous brother to Edmund, he is the bane of low-level characters.

Rupert - A wild berserker, Rupert charges headlong with a powerful, two-handed weapon.

Terence - A violent murderer hiding out in the early dungeon, he poses most threat to weak, low-level characters.

Para-human
Demigod (monster) - As half-mortal, one of a demigod's parents is ostensibly of human ilk.

Killer Klown - Underneath all that makeup and malevolence lurks a human-like figure.

Prince Ribbit - His current blink frog exterior belies the original human body he reverts back to when killed.

Obsolete humans
Duane - A weak, large-eared mercenary who possessed a few minor spells

Francis - A wizened wizard who could summon dangerous demons.

Jozef - A tall bounty-hunter, who was known for vexing characters with a number of traps and tricks.

Paladin (monster) - A very rare holy monster, complete with halo, who was in quest for The Shining One.

Josephine - A decaying necromancer, complete with an undead retinue and capable of making many more.

Kirke - A hex wielding sorceress, bent on transforming unwary victims into one of her hogs.

Louise - A sorceress who spent far too long in the Abyss, eager for others to share her fate.

Norbert - A monster-slaying warrior who would deem your character as such.

Paladin (monster) - A very rare holy monster, complete with halo, who was in quest for The Shining One.

Michael - A departed spellcaster, as unremarkable as his name would suggest.

Useful Info
Paladins are powerful warriors with holy attributes; they can be considered the holy analogue to hell knights. They are constantly surrounded by a 2-tile halo aura and generally come with heavy armour, a shield of some sort, and a weapon of holy wrath (generally a blessed blade). While they are legitimate threats to undead and demonspawn characters, they are extremely rare, generally only appearing on holy-themed Pandemonium and Ziggurat floors.

Tips & Tricks
*If you want to get a blessed blade without having to worship the Shining One, paladins often carry them.
*As with other holy monsters, killing a paladin may result in the Shining One smiting you with Cleansing Flame. If you're very low on health, avoid killing any paladins lest you suddenly meet an untimely end.

History
Rupert the Wild is a unique human berserker who has a branded two-handed weapon (such as a battleaxe, great mace, or great sword), decent armour, and can see invisible.
Tips & Tricks
*Rupert's spell set makes him a surprisingly dangerous opponent. Finding yourself paralyzed for several turns while he rages and charges in is a quick and frustrating way to die, but fortunately you can block this with high magic resistance, an amulet of stasis, or a wall of summoned allies. His confusion is not as bad, as you can quickly cure it with a potion of curing, but it's still not ideal.
*He thankfully has no resistances, so no backgrounds should find themselves unable to harm him. Sending a swarm of summons to take him out is one of the safest approaches (5-6 ice beasts can take him down easily), but any ranged attacker going all out should be able to take him down (just be ready to blink or teleport away if he gets too close). Melee fighters face the most risk, as his weapon can cleave through most defenses you'll have by the time you reach the Lair, especially if he's got a decent brand on it.
*He's got too much HD for Mephitic Cloud to work reliably on him, enough magic resistance to block most mid-level Hexes, and he's just too dangerous to gradually wear him down with weaker spells. For spellcasters, the best strategy is to hit him with everything you've got as quickly as possible, preferably while Hasted and/or otherwise buffed.
*If you can swim or fly, deep water can keep you safely out of Rupert's reach. Simply wait out any confusion or paralysis, and wear him down with ranged damage or poison. Even pure melee fighters can take him out with a common blowgun and stack of poisoned needles if you catch him on the other side of a lake.
*Rupert has a chance of spawning with one of the rare heavy weapons, such as a triple sword or executioner's axe. It's great if you were looking for one and can get it away from him, but actually doing so is easier said than done.

History
While he and his spell set were unchanged, with the removal of the Berserker Rage player spell and the changing of Crusaders to Skalds, Rupert was restyled as a Trog worshiper in 0.9. The text for his Confuse and Paralyse spells was changed to match: apparently one can induce confusion and paralysis by yelling loud enough.
Sigmund the Dreaded is a deadly unique human, and one of the earliest uniques you can encounter. He is always generated with a powerful scythe, a robe, and several brutal spells. He may also spawn with a wand of lightning, wand of draining, or wand of paralysis, but he's dangerous enough even without those. Sigmund is notorious for being one of the deadliest uniques in all of DCSS.
<!--spl-bot-end-->

Tips & Tricks
*Sigmund's damage output in melee will be devastating for low-level characters, but his biggest threats are in his spell list. An invisible Sigmund is almost unbeatable in early-game melee, his Throw Flame lets him brutalize you at range, and expect a swift end if he confuses you and you're out of potions of curing.
*Avoiding Sigmund is usually the wisest thing you can do. If you find him sleeping early on, just walk away and return once you've gained a few levels and found some better gear.
*There are some options for low-level characters who want to take him out immediately. Mephitic Cloud will leave him unable to use magic and almost hopeless in melee, while a few zaps from a good wand will annihilate him. A wand of polymorph may also turn him into a less deadly form and will probably make him drop his scythe, but it's less of a safe bet; Sigmund the centaur is much deadlier than normal.
*If all else fails and you have no choice but to engage him early, don't be afraid to use any useful potions you've identified. Berserk, haste, or might go a long way toward helping you take him down, and a few potions of heal wounds can keep you in the fight longer than you'd otherwise last.
Although her collection of spells is no more dangerous than you'd find on an orc wizard, she is notoriously deadly due to the chaos (75% odds) or distortion (25%) dagger she generates with, often sending careless melee fighters to the Abyss at lethally low levels.
Trivia
Psyche is a character from the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche. In this myth, Psyche was a girl who fell in love with the god of desire, Eros, but needed to complete several impossible tasks before his mother Aphrodite would allow them to be wed.
Tips & Tricks
*Needless to say, electricity resistance will save your skin now more than ever. Defeating him without it is significantly more dangerous, quite often deadly when you first encounter him. If you don't have any rElec items, remember that a potion of resistance will insulate you just as well. Just be sure you can kill Nikola before it wears off.
*Be mindful of electricity's ability to hit you more than once. Avoid straying into water or too close to rock or stone walls. If you encounter Nikola in the Swamp or a similar aqueous environment, consider avoiding that level.
*Nikola will try to get adjacent to you and cast Chain Lightning, causing the spell to bounce between you and him repeatedly. This can cause upwards of 100 damage in a single turn if you don't have rElec, so be very careful.
*Silence will shut down his spellcasting ability, making him considerably less dangerous. Of course, it also shuts down your spellcasting ability, so this tactic is best used by melee-focused characters.
*Surprisingly, he actually lacks electricity resistance himself. If you have powerful electric attacks, don't be afraid to use them.
*Nikola has no qualms about frying other monsters. Taking cover behind them isn't safe.

Trivia
Nikola was named in honor of Nikola Tesla, an inventor famous for his eccentricity and his work with electricity.
Maurice the Thief is a unique thief who is perfectly happy to separate you from your hard-earned loot. He likes nothing more than sneaking up on you while invisible to pick your pockets as he attacks you, dealing damage and taking a random item (or gold) from your inventory. He generates with a cloak and dagger or short sword, some gold, and often a decent wand.
*Being able to see invisible will give you the chance to blast him on sight instead of letting him start the battle by taking your best attack wand.

Maurice Scumming
An obscure but very powerful exploit used to be possible with Maurice. Prior to 0.10, uniques who were sent to the Abyss and then followed the player back out would not be removed from the Abyss spawn list: only killing them in the Abyss would do that. Therefore, it was possible to duplicate them. With Maurice, this made item duplication possible: let him steal the item, duplicate him, and voila, you have two items. In this game, the player used this exploit to duplicate scrolls of acquirement. Because Maurice would steal entire stacks of items as opposed to just a single one, the growth in scrolls would be exponential, making it possible to generate up to 300 or so scrolls of acquirement at a time this way (as many as you could carry). Needless to say, this exploit has since been fixed.

The score in the above game was achieved by acquiring gold; the death was intentional (like any good mummy, killed by fire), as was the exact score gotten. In theory, there was virtually no limit to how high a score could have been attained, other than that imposed by the hard 200,000,000 turn cap.
Maud is a spell-less warrior, so attack her from afar. She is not very dangerous in melee either; she has decent damage and a good weapon, but is only normal speed with poor and EV. Check her weapon to see if it's any good; demon weaponry is often very useful in the mid-game, especially if it's nicely branded.
History
Maud is a reference to the scroll of amnesia found in NetHack, a competing roguelike. When the scroll is read, in addition to causing maprot and ID-rot, it produces messages referring to Maud, the name itself being a reference to the Alfred Tennyson poem of the same name.
Tips & Tricks
*As both Margery and her associates will be pelting you with Fire Magic as long as you're in sight, fire resistance is a must. Her fireballs can brutalize the unprepared.
*If you're capable of dealing cold damage, use it on her. She never has cold resistance, and sometimes her armour makes her vulnerable to it.
*If you encounter hell knights in either the Depths, the Vaults, or the Crypt, there's a very good chance that Margery is close by. Separate individuals from the pack as best you can, and escape if it seems like you'll have to tackle them all at once.
*Be sure to examine the equipment of Margery's pack. Hell knights often carry excellent weaponry.
Kirke, Weaver of Myths is an unusual unique sorceress who travels with a band of hogs and would very much like for you to join them! She can cast several dangerous Hexes, including one unique spell which turns you into a pig, and calls various mythical beasts into existence to aid her in combat. On top of that, she has a permanent Deflect Missiles effect in place, rendering her significantly more difficult to kill at range. Bring high magic resistance to avoid an embarrassing death ("extraordinarily resistant" is generally enough to resist all her enchantments).
<!--spl-bot-end-->

Tips & Tricks
*While it's usually a decent idea to kill summoners quickly rather than to focus on their summoned allies, you should consider your escape plans before fighting Kirke. Scrolls of teleportation still function in Pig Form, but wands of teleportation will not.
*All of her summons are significant trouble for a character in Pig Form. Harpies can deal very heavy damage to low AC characters, manticore spines devastate anyone trying to flee on foot, and a sphinx's Paralyse spell is even more likely to succeed against you than Kirke's Porkalator. Stack on magic resistance before the fight (and possibly stasis to prevent being slowed or paralysed), and try to finish her off before she has time to complicate things.
*Don't waste time killing her hogs. Kirke is the much bigger threat here.
*Should you get turned into a hog yourself, most characters will want to flee, as pigs are unable to use weapons, armour, or spells. Unarmed Combat specialists may be tempted to continue fighting, but your damage output will be severely reduced. Don't try it.
*Silence will shut down Kirke's spellcasting abilities entirely, at which point you can just take her out in melee. She's no threat there, though any allies she's already summoned will still be trouble.
*Conjurers and ranged weapon users may have trouble getting past her innate Deflect Missiles. Spellcasters can try using attacks that can't be dodged, like Fireball or Airstrike, but ranged weapon combatants will probably want to try a different approach or be prepared for a lot of missed shots.

Trivia
Kirke is an alternate spelling of Circe, a beautiful Greek goddess of magic who used potions to turn her enemies into pigs.

History
Prior to 0.14, Kirke knew Summon Ugly Thing in place of Monstrous Menagerie.
<!--spl-bot-end-->

Tips & Tricks
*If you encounter multiple undead creatures on an otherwise normal floor, you've likely stumbled upon a few members of Josephine's undead band. Wait a while, letting them wake up and start coming after you. If you lure them away and kill them in another room, that'll make the fight with Josephine significantly easier. Fighting them with her providing support magic means she'll be healing them and blasting you with Ghostly Fireballs every few turns.
*Her Vampiric Draining spell deals modest damage and heals her, making it somewhat less appealing to engage her in melee. However, fighting her in melee often tricks her into hitting you with her Ghostly Fireball, blasting herself as well for a reduced but still significant amount of damage. Don't be afraid to rush in and let her kamikaze herself out of existence.
*Undead characters should try to take her down quickly; the irresistible damage from her Dispel Undead can take you down with frightening speed. She needs a clear line of sight to hit you with it, however, so summoned allies can help here.

History
In 0.16, Josephine will be accompanied by a band of wraiths.

Prior to 0.14, Josephine knew Bolt of Cold, Agony, and Simulacrum instead of Ghostly Fireball, Vampiric Draining, and Dispel Undead. Also, she had no negative energy resistance.
*Summoners might try attempting to swarm her with various different summons (to get around the caps): her conjurations are both single target and require a clear line of fire, meaning she won't be able to hit you or kill your summons too quickly. Unfortunately, she may also attempt to abjure them.
Tips & Tricks
*He likes to surround you with summons and then blink away. When this happens, remember that his summons give no rewards when killed, and avoid getting bogged down trying to chop your way through all of them. Try to kill him first, and his summoned creatures will be dismissed immediately. If you have a wand of fire, cold, lightning, or draining, consider using those right through his summons to take him down from a distance.
*The best strategy is to lure him past a blind corner and beat him to a pulp without letting him summon anything. This applies even to casters, as his summons may block the line of fire of your most powerful spells. Get in close and nuke him quick.
**If you find yourself in melee with him and suddenly discover you've lost half your health, retreat immediately; his cutlass occasionally comes with a devastating electrocution brand.
*If he's already got a wall of summoned animals around him and you have Mephitic Cloud available, try to hit as many targets as you can with its blast radius. A crowd of confused targets will tear itself apart quickly enough. His demonic allies will be immune, however.
Useful Info
Edmund the Younger is a weak unique who appears in the early game. Although he's Sigmund's brother, he is not nearly as lethal. He generates with a decent flail (often holy wrath branded), a well-enchanted suit of medium weight armour, and (occasionally) a random attack wand, making him a threat to low-level characters.
*The Orcish Mines:1

Tips & Tricks
*If discovered early on, he can be an overwhelming melee opponent, but even then he lacks any real tricks. Intelligent use of ranged attacks can take him out fairly easily, but don't be overconfident. You can always come back later when he's a pushover.
*Undead characters should be mindful of his weapon. Holy wrath can make short work of careless players.
Donald the Adventurer is an unique adventurer whose dialogue varies based on your current religion and the branch you find him in. He is stronger than an orc knight, capable of swimming through deep water, and often generates with a good wand and a shield of reflection, making him unusually dangerous to ranged weapon users and casters who rely on blockable spells.

*The Swamp
*The Snake Pits
*The Vaults:3-4
*Labyrinths

Tips & Tricks
*If his shield is one of reflection, it makes combat significantly more dangerous and restricts your spell set (nothing ruins your day more than a reflected Lehudib's Crystal Spear). Casters should test his shield for reflection with a weak spell before attempting anything that could potentially kill you. Bear in mind that Bolt spells and area of effect attack spells are unreflectable, such as Freezing Cloud, Poisonous Cloud, Fireball, Lee's Rapid Deconstruction, Fulminant Prism, etc.
*His HD means he's still susceptible to Mephitic Cloud, and when he's confused his blocking ability and reflection powers will be set to zero.
*Trapping him with a throwing net also negates his blocking ability, though he might be able to reflect it back at you.

Useful Info
Vault wardens are the heads of security in the Vaults. Along with decent melee attacks, these sentries have the ability to seal shut any number of doors and stairs in their line of sight, locking you in with them until the warden is slain or sufficient time has passed. As they usually travel with a sizable band of allies, this can be an extremely dangerous prospect.

Abilities: Seal Doors
<!--spl-bot-end-->

Tips & Tricks
*Vault wardens can be selective about which doors they close. If there are more monsters charging you from the next room over, they'll likely ignore that door while sealing off all the useful escape routes. Specifically, they won't allow tension to drop by more than a third when shutting a door.
*Need to escape but don't think you can survive the warden and his allies? Don't be afraid to teleport. You may wind up in an equally dangerous scenario, but it's better to chance that than get killed.
*Be extremely cautious if you see a vault warden upon entering Vaults:5. If they seal shut the six stairways in the center of the floor, you'll be forced to kill it (along with the army guarding the entrance) before you'll be able to leave.

History
Prior to 0.13 they were not able to seal stairways, and sealed doors could be affected by digging or disintegration.

Vault wardens were added to the game in 0.12.
Vault sentinels are one of the weaker human guards in the Vaults. ==Tips & Tricks==

*Vault sentinels are too durable for most characters to one-shot at a distance, unfortunately, so expect to have to deal with their abilities. Most of the time, the reinforcements that arrive are less dangerous than those teleported in by ironbrand convokers, usually amounting to one or two more bands of enemies arriving before the mark wears off. If you find yourself marked and near some stairs to the floor above you, feel free to wait out the effect up there. Just don't be surprised if you need to stairdance a little when you decide to go back down.
**If marked on Vault:5, go back upstairs immediately. This floor can become incredibly deadly if a sentinel tags you.
*Most debilitating effects work very well against vault sentinels. Their low hit dice and magic resistance makes it easy to hit them with Mephitic Cloud or Ensorcelled Hibernation, and you can't go wrong with Silence.
Useful Info
Ironheart preservers are durable enemy support fighters which can take damage in place of their allies, making it more difficult to kill dangerous-yet-flimsy opponents first. Coupled with their ability to heal themselves, their presence can significantly lengthen battles with groups of foes. They can be found in the Vaults, usually accompanying bands of deep trolls, deep elves, orcs, or ogres, and often supporting a vault warden.

Tips & Tricks
*Injury Bond causes half the damage dealt to an affected enemy to be redirected to the ironheart preserver, effectively doubling the HP of everything around it until the preserver is destroyed. On top of that, they'll occasionally heal themselves if you let them live long enough to do so. Get around that by overwhelming them with a lethal amount of shared damage quickly. Pouring damage into soft, squishy targets (like the plentiful ogres in the Vaults) can kill them off rapidly, especially if you use area-of-effect spells that hit multiple targets.
Useful Info
Ironbrand convokers are dangerous enemy support units which enhance the melee prowess of any monsters nearby, and will use their Word of Recall spell to call in reinforcements from elsewhere on the floor. They can be found in the Vaults.
Tips & Tricks
*Word of Recall takes 3 turns to complete, and requires the caster be able to breathe. If you can kill, confuse, silence, scare, petrify, or otherwise disable the convoker before it completes its spell, the reinforcements won't arrive. Hitting him with a curare needle is an excellent method that doesn't have to overcome the victim's hit dice or magic resistance, so if you have a clean shot, take it.

History
Ironbrand convokers were added in 0.12.
Useful Info
Vault guards are stout warriors found only in the Vaults, or occasionally guarding its entrance or the entrance to a treasure trove. They tend to wield powerful, occasionally-branded weapons and sometimes shields. On their own, they're about as dangerous as an orc knight, but they tend to be found along with a band of vault wardens, ironheart preservers, and ironbrand convokers. Also, you are guaranteed to face a horde of them upon entering the final floor of the Vaults.

Tips & Tricks
*Although not particularly terrifying, they can land decently powerful hits, particularly when armed with well-branded gear. Try not to take on too many at once.
*Their magic resistance is not that great. Confusing, enslaving, or petrifying them is not a bad idea. In case of emergency, bring a scroll of fear to send most of them running.
