+2 slippers (modified boots: 0 base AC)<br>
Make all damaging melee attacks trample their wearer backward (immune when climbing stairs)<br>
Provide immunity to constriction, engulfing, webs, and throwing nets.<br>
+4 EV

Desirability
A "freedom of movement" style effect is desirable throughout the game, especially in places where constriction is common, like Spider (webs) and Snake (constrict). The +4 EV is a welcome bonus.

However, the slippery effect is generally a negative. Being forced to move, at seemingly random intervals, can cause a lot of problems. It makes stair dancing very difficult. You can be forced onto traps or into shallow water. It often makes your positioning worse. And slippery is unreliable: since you must be damaged in order for it to proc, dodging an attack means you won't actually get pushed back.

If you can manage your fights and positioning well, then you can negate much of the downside from the proc. For example, fighting with your back against a wall (or against another monster) will prevent you from being pushed around.

Upon reading a scroll of brand weapon, you will be asked to choose a non-artefact weapon from your inventory to receive a permanent, randomly-selected brand. This will also replace any brand currently on the targeted weapon, if any.

If you have already identified the scroll, you may cancel the process by pressing Esc without consuming it.

The brand you receive depends on if its a melee or ranged weapon:
**Flaming
**Freezing
**Heavy
**Draining
*Rare: 7.1%
**Electrocution
**Chaos

The selected brand will automatically be rerolled in two cases:
*the new brand is identical to the weapon's former brand;
*your god disapproves of the selected brand.

Note that the scroll cannot give the antimagic, holy wrath, pain, or speed brands to weapons. Additionally, ranged weapons can't get the penetration brand from this scroll.

History
*Prior to 0.30, the heavy brand did not exist.
*In 0.28, brand likelihood was changed to be more uniform.
*Prior to 0.26, the spectral brand did not exist.
*Prior to 0.15, rebranding a distortion weapon would trigger a distortion unwield effect. Also, the scroll would automatically affect your wielded weapon, rather than letting you choose a target.
*Prior to 0.14, you could control which brand you received to some extent: any temporary brand your wielded weapon held upon reading would be made permanent. Additionally, any time you gave your weapon one of the following brands, you would receive the following effect:
**Flame/Flaming: Inner Flame explosion centered on the reader
**Frost/Freezing: Ozocubu's Refrigeration
**Draining/Vampiricism: Moderate draining to the reader
**Venom: Olgreb's Toxic Radiance
**Electrocution: Orb of Electrocution centered on the reader
**Chaos: Chaos-branded explosion
*:The following temporary brands could not be affixed this way, and attempting to do so was punished as follows:
**Pain: Torment
**Distortion: A random Translocations miscast effect (possibly including banishment)
**Antimagic: Drains all your MP
spell info

Manifold Assault is a level 5 Translocations spell which allows you to attack multiple targets within line of sight with melee attacks. Higher spellpower allows you to attack more targets at once, up to a maximum of four. This spell's cast time is the same as your wielded weapon's attack delay.

The number of targets is equal to <code>2 + Spell Power/50</code>, rounded in a weighted manner. All hostile monsters that are in LOS have an equal chance to be targeted. Each target is hit by 1 attack from your weapon (or fist), with no auxiliary attacks. Weapon traits like cleaving or stabbing are similarly excluded. An exception is the artefact Gyre and Gimble, with which you will hit each targeted enemy twice, once with each blade.

Warpers start with this spell available.

Strategy
*This spell takes quite a bit of investment to cast. Species like Gnolls can spare the experience to use this spell, while able to invest into melee combat stats too.
*Manifold Assault thrives when paired with high damage melee attacks. Slower weapons like the Dark maul, or Transmutations such as Dragon Form, will prove to be effective.
*This spell is quite MP intensive, but Djinn and characters worshipping Vehumet or The Shining One (in the late-game) can afford to continously spam it at a distance.

Exemptions
The following artefacts do not work with Manifold Assault:
*Sword of Power
*Devastator
*Mace of Variability
*Singing Sword
*Arc Blade
monster spells

Tips & Tricks
*Orb spiders can deal a good amount of damage, but they are quite fragile. Use ranged attacks to kill them fast.
*With decent footwork, you can dodge their Orbs of Destruction. Once you've managed that, the orb will take several turns to circle back around for another pass, which may take it into another spider, a wall, or even the orb spider that cast it.
*Summon Butterflies can be a great way to block their orbs, although at low spell power you may need to cast it multiple times to get a decent wall of meatshields.
*Orb Spiders have a relatively low amount of Hit Dice, making them a good target for a wand of polymorph if you don't have a good ranged weapon.

-William Youatt, _Sheep: their breeds, management, and diseases; to which is added the Mountain Shepherd's Manual_, ch. III. 1837.}}

A wand is a magical device that contains several charges of a specific spell or effect.

A player may zap a wand in the inventory with the V key (that is, evoking it). This releases its magical effect at a target of the player's choice, and one charge of the wand will be depleted. A wand does not normally show how many charges it has left; this information can be gathered either by identification or by using a wand with sufficient Evocations skill. If the number of charges of a wand is unknown, zapping the wand will waste several charges. However, the game will record wand usage, so that the player can see how many times a wand has been zapped. Unlike rods, a wand does not have to be wielded to be used, and can even be used while the player's wielded weapon and shield are cursed.

A wand with no charges left is empty, and will not function (but will still waste a turn as you discover this). Wands can be recharged using a scroll of recharging, even if not emptied. Deep dwarves possess a racial ability that also lets them recharge wands, though at a permanent MP cost.

A wand's spell power equals 15+2.5×Evocations, though this is still limited by the spell power caps for the spell cast. For monsters zapping wands, the power is normally 30+hit dice, although this can vary greatly depending on the type of wand. Some monsters, particularly uniques, may start with wands in their inventory.

Xom is greatly entertained (200) when you use a wand of random effects on yourself or others.
High-tier wands
Some wands are considered too dangerous to be generated in the inventory of monsters with HD less than 5. Monsters with the No HT wand flag are also excluded. Ijyb is the exception to this rule.

*Wand of disintegration

History
Prior to 0.18, wands' charge differences were not easily visible even if identified.

0.18 removed the wand of cold, draining, fire, fireball, frost, invisibility, and magic darts, but introduced wands of acid and iceblast. Wands of fire, cold and draining were high-tier wands.

Prior to 0.16, wands were not automatically identified when picked up. However, zapping a wand with an unknown number of charges did not waste any charges.

Prior to 0.15, wands weighted 10.0 aum each.

The most prominent features of the dungeon, walls block movement and often LOS. In general, destroying or bypassing them requires one of several wands or spells, sometimes fairly powerful.

Wall Varieties
Rock
This wall consists of simple rock.
Very common walls made from unworked stone that block LOS, but are relatively easily removed. Electrical attacks will bounce right off them. Rock is the only material for which the Passwall spell operates, allowing you to slip through it. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Boring beetles
*Eyes of devastation
*Dissolution

Translucent Rock
Identical to rock walls, but they don't block LOS. Bear in mind that you can't blink through them, even if you can see what's inside. Smite-targeted attacks are blocked.

Stone
More durable than rock walls, these require stronger magic to remove. As with rock walls, electrical attacks will bounce off these. Destroyed by:
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Corruption

Translucent Stone
The stone analog to transparent rock.

Metal
The most resilient normal walls of all. Destroyed by:
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at very high spell power)
*Shatter (at very high spell power)
*Corruption

Crystal
Immune to most wall-removal methods, these reflect fire and cold the way stone walls reflect lightning. Destroyed by:
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction

Trees
Functionally walls, these block movement, and can block LOS if you try to look beyond two adjacent ones. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Mangroves
These function identically to trees, except that they block LOS. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Slime Covered Rock
Found only in the Slime Pits, these will corrode any adventurer who touches them. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Disintegration
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Dissolution

Rune Carved Stone
These walls make up the central chamber of the bottom of the Slime Pits, where the Slimy Rune of Zot is found. If the royal jelly is dead (or if you have high piety with Jiyva), these walls will turn into translucent rock, allowing easy access to the rune. Without these methods, these walls can only be destroyed with:
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Corruption

Unnaturally Hard Wall
You cannot affect this wall by any means.
Walls which are described as unnaturally hard are completely indestructible. The only way past them is to go around.

Translucent Unnaturally Hard Wall
The indestructible variant of translucent rock.

Open Sea
While not walls in the traditional sense, these impassable tiles mark the outer borders of the Shoals and certain Sewers layouts.

Endless Lava
The fiery equivalent of the open sea tiles, these mark the outer borders of a floor across lava pools.

Iron Grate
These block movement, spells, and ranged attacks, but not LOS or smite-targeted attacks. They are usually found in special vaults, sealing away monsters with smite-targeted attacks, though they may also be generated as the result of stepping on a pressure plate. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Large Window
Large windows are found in the certain Sewers maps, and function identically to transparent rock walls.

History
Prior to 0.11, you could find walls of solid wax:

Wax walls are frequently found in killer bee vaults, though they can also appear near altars to Xom or in the Abyss. They often hide treasure, in particular royal jelly and honeycombs. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Boring beetles
Prior to 0.11, you could find walls of solid wax:

Wax walls are frequently found in killer bee vaults, though they can also appear near altars to Xom or in the Abyss. They often hide treasure, in particular royal jelly and honeycombs. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction

"Sacrifice that you might gain great power!"

Racial Restrictions
Demigods are prohibited from worshiping Ru.

Appreciates
*Making sacrifices. The amount of piety granted per sacrifice varies depending on the significance of the sacrifice (sacrificing a hand grants much more piety than sacrificing purity by gaining dopiness).

Deprecates
*Nothing. You can't offend Ru, Ru has no penance, and inflicts no wrath for leaving. However, you lose the benefits of worshiping Ru while retaining all the drawbacks of your sacrifices (they are not undone).

*Piety with Ru does not decrease.

Given Abilities
Piety level -: "Questioner"
:*Make Sacrifice - Ru gives you no powers initially, but as you explore will periodically offer you a batch of three sacrifice options to make. These will be available from the Abilities screen. Making a sacrifice will permanently handicap your character in a dramatic way, but will grant you piety, which unlocks new abilities and makes them more powerful. New sacrifices will be offered periodically, and will refresh faster after you accept one than if you simply let a set of three sit unused. The exact amount of piety received varies depending on how crippling the effect is on your character. See Sacrifices below for more details. Note that Monks do not get their initial starting piety with Ru as they would with other gods, but do get offered an immediate choice of sacrifices upon joining if Ru is their first god.

Once you've made sufficient sacrifices to reach full piety, Ru will stop offering new ones. If you abandon and return to the god, however, new sacrifices will be made available.

Piety level *: "Initiate"
:*Aura of Power - Any enemy that attacks you may instead falter or redirect its attack to itself or another target. The chance of this rises linearly with piety, reaching a 10% chance of faltering and 5% chance of redirecting at max piety.

Piety level **: "Seeker of Truth"
:*Your Aura of Power is strengthened. Enemies that inflict damage upon you receive various detrimental status effects. The chance of this rises linearly with piety, reaching 33% at max piety. The specific status effect applied is randomly chosen from the following list: Corona, Silence, Blind, Slow, or Paralysis. The chance of inflicting a more severe status effect rises with damage sustained and falls based on the attacker's HD.

Piety level ***: "Walker of the Path"
:*Draw Out Power - When used, you regain HP and MP, free yourself from nets, webs and constriction, and cure petrification, slow, and confusion. Cost: exhaustion, moderate draining.

Piety level ****: "Lifter of the Veil"
:*Power Leap - Allows you to leap three tiles and creates a damaging 3x3 explosion wherever you land. Explosion damage scales with piety and experience level. Cost: 5 MP, exhaustion.

Piety level *****: "Transcendent"
:*Apocalypse - Deals heavy damage and random status effects to every enemy within your line of sight. Cost: 8 MP, exhaustion, heavy draining.

Piety level ******: "Drop of Water"
:*No new abilities. Please note that unlike other gods, Ru's piety caps at 160. That means that as soon as you reach ****** piety, you are maxed out.

Punishments
Ru cannot be offended in any way, and will never deliver punishments upon your character. However, all sacrifices made while worshiping Ru are permanent, and the abilities Ru grants are lost upon abandonment.

Strategy
Ru encourages focused characters by rewarding the sacrifice of anything that lies outside one's planned build, granting extremely powerful abilities and buffs in return. Wearing an amulet of faith does not increase the piety gained per sacrifice, nor does Forlorn reduce it; instead, they simply hasten or slow down the rate at which new sacrifices are offered. Unlike with most other gods, removing an amulet of faith does not damage piety. One simply gains an extra delay before the next set of sacrifices is offered. As such, a max piety Ru-worshiper gains nothing from wearing an amulet of faith and loses nothing for removing it.

Be aware that any sacrifices you take up are permanent. You will never get back that arm, or your dodging skill, or the ability to have allies. Thus, it is rarely a good idea to switch to another god from Ru.

Try to sacrifice such that it does not interfere heavily with your strategy. For example, in a 3 rune game, where you wouldn't expect a lot of torment or hellfire, Sacrifice Drink would be more doable than for a 15 rune game where both are commonplace and will frequently deny you your potions. Sacrifice Arcana would be fine for 3 rune games where you could do without some spells, but may be regrettable should you wish to go for 15 and find yourself unable to cast Haste, Controlled Blink, or Regeneration. Contrariwise, Sacrifice Essence may be dangerous and difficult to cope with in a 3 rune game, but can be easily made up for in equipment by the extended game.

That said, Ru does offer many useful powers. Though it may not feel substantial, Aura of Power will give you a decent edge in fights, it also has the added benefit of aiding in kiting enemies, as the chance for Aura of Power to distract an enemy occurs on any action taken by that enemy, including walking towards you, meaning characters of average speed may eventually out run enemies that lose turns to Aura of Power without the need for haste or swiftness. Draw out Power is straightforward - instantly regain HP and MP at the cost of slight draining. Power Leap is a highly versatile tool for both positioning yourself and damaging enemies. Finally, Apocalypse will incapacitate foes everywhere while dealing considerable damage. It can wipe out most of your ordinary foes and tough ones will be significantly weakened.

All of Ru's abilities exhaust the user for a short while, as though you'd cast Death's Door or gone berserk. Choose when to use your abilities wisely.

Sacrifices
Ru will offer you a randomly selected batch of three sacrifices every so often. Choosing a sacrifice will permanently handicap your character as described, and you will not be able to make a new sacrifice until a new batch is offered. Each sacrifice can be selected only once, though you'll only have to make a fraction of them over the course of the game. Unlike other gods, Ru's piety maxes at 160 (the start of six stars) rather than 200, so as soon as you hit ******, you are have maximum piety and Ru will no longer offer sacrifices.

Sacrifice Arcana - Permanently lose three randomly selected magic skills and access to all spells in those schools. Any experience you've invested in the associated skills will be converted to additional piety, and any spells you already know that use those skills will be forgotten. One school is chosen from each of the following groups:
*Charms/Conjurations/Summonings/Translocations
*Transmutations/Necromancy/Hexes
*Air Magic/Earth Magic/Fire Magic/Ice Magic/Poison Magic.

Sacrifice Artifice - Permanently lose the Evocations skill. Any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety. Your character can no longer activate any wands, rods, or abilities which rely upon the Evocations skill. Brands, egos, and the lantern of shadows still function as normal though.

Sacrifice Courage - Suffer a slaying and spellpower malus which scales with the number and strength of opponents in your line of sight. Penalties begin when more than one tough monster or a single nasty monster is visible, and becomes more pronounced as more opponents appear.

Sacrifice Drink - Any time you are severely injured or suffer a significantly strong attack, you lose the ability to quaff potions for ??? turns. Any attack that reduces you below 30% of max HP will trigger this, as can heavy attacks regardless of your current HP; such attacks must deal damage equal to at least 4% of your max HP for a chance of triggering the ability loss, and the chance rises with higher damage, guaranteed at 20% max HP.

Sacrifice Durability - Permanently lose the Armour skill. Any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety. Worth bonus piety if you've also used Sacrifice Nimbleness.

Sacrifice Essence - Permanently suffer one of the following randomly selected negatives: a negative rank of wizardry, -40 magic resistance, or -10% MP. When you select this sacrifice, you will get to see which option has been chosen for you, and may accept or decline at that point.

Sacrifice Experience - Immediately lose two levels of experience and reduces your maximum level to 25.

Sacrifice Eye - Causes inaccuracy as if you were wearing two amulets of inaccuracy at once, which, like those, affects both melee, ranged and spells. Stacks with amulets of inaccuracy.

Sacrifice Hand - Permanently lose one hand (or set of hands in the case of formicids) and all associated benefits of two-handedness. You can only wield weapons which are one-handed for your species, lose the ability to deliver offhand punches, can never wear shields, and lose one ring slot. You also lose access to the Shields skill and (unless you are a Formicid) the Bows skill, and any experience invested in them will be converted to additional piety. Small races (Halflings, Kobolds, and Spriggans) also lose access to, and gain additional piety for, the Staves skill.

Sacrifice Health - Permanently suffer one of the following randomly selected negatives: -5 , -3 EV, or -10% HP. When you select this sacrifice, you will get to see which option has been chosen for you, and may accept or decline at that point.

Sacrifice Love - Permanently make almost all monsters you encounter hostile to you. This includes derived undead which you generate and temporary monsters which you summon or create through evokable items. The only unaffected monsters are orbs of destruction, ball lightning, battlespheres, spectral weapons, and fulminant prisms. Notably, the fire vortices created by Fire Storm will be hostile. Also, the spell Enslave and all wands of enslavement will no longer function.

Sacrifice Nimbleness - Permanently lose the Dodging skill. Any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety. Worth bonus piety if you've also used Sacrifice Durability.

Sacrifice Purity - Permanently acquire one rank of one of the following bad mutations: Scream, Deterioration, Slow Healing, No Device Heal, or Reduced Attributes. The mutation is randomly selected when you choose this sacrifice, and you may decide whether or not to accept the selected mutation at that time.

Sacrifice Resistance - Provides rF- rC-.

Sacrifice Skill - Permanently reduce all skill aptitudes by 1. The effect is retroactive, so will make you lose ranks in skills you have already trained.

Sacrifice Stealth - Permanently have your stealth value set to 0, as though you were constantly berserking. Any opponent in your line of sight will immediately notice you. This does not mean you produce additional noise, however, so you will not be waking up things beyond your line of sight any more than normal. You also permanently lose the Stealth skill, and any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety.

Sacrifice Words - Any time you are severely injured or suffer a significantly strong attack, you lose the ability to read scrolls for ???

History
A surprise in every bottle! Potions of mutation first remove 2-6 mutations, then attempt to inflict 1-3 random mutations on you with each of those mutations having a 60% chance of being good, then give you one good mutation. Heavily mutated characters or those with any form of mutation resistance will often receive fewer mutations, potentially receiving zero. Followers of Zin incur a piety loss and a penance if they knowingly drink this potion.

Note that undead characters cannot mutate and will rot instead, reducing maximum health and possibly taking a temporary hit to stats as well.
;Piety 81+
*Ammunition. If you are eligible for a gift and 1d(Piety) >= 72, there's a 13% chance that you will receive ammunition on a given turn. This happens only if you have trained a missile skill (Slings, Bows, Crossbows, or Throwing) and you have the launcher for your best missile skill (sling, (long)bow, crossbow, or blowgun respectively) in your inventory. You may receive ammo for a different skill than this best skill (but always a skill you have). Throwing missiles and needles will often be branded. The gift timeout for each gift is 2d4 + 4.

;Piety 130+
*Weapons and armour. If you are eligible for a gift and 1d(Piety) >= 120, there's a 25% chance that you will receive a weapon or piece of armour. The item given will always be wearable by your species and can be of any quality level. It is similar to a scroll of acquirement, but the results are somewhat worse on average. The gift timeout for each gift is between 31 and 49 for weapons, and between 62 and 94 for armour.

Punishments
*While under penance, Okawaru will sometimes punish you by sending 1d(experience level/5) hostile, durably summoned monsters to fight you. The monsters are picked among:
**Orc warrior (15%)
**Orc knight (15%)
**Naga warrior (10%)
**Centaur warrior (10%)
**Stone giant (10%)
**Fire giant(10%)
**Frost giant (10%)
**Cyclops (10%)
**Hill giant (5%)
**Titan (5%)

In general, if you can survive Vaults:5, you can survive Okawaru's wrath. The monsters Okawaru summons are no worse than those encountered there, although there is always the possibility that they will be summoned at a particularly inopportune moment.

If there is nowhere within your line of sight for these monsters to be summoned to, the message, "Okawaru's forces are busy with other wars," will appear instead.

Strategy
Okawaru is the most popular god for melee characters.

Okawaru's simple, straightforward effectiveness has made Okawaru one of the most popular yet criticized gods in the Crawl pantheon. Okawaru grants only two abilities - a Heroism effect that can be invoked at * and a Finesse effect at *****. Used in conjunction, this will allow twice as many attacks with greater offense and defense. These enhancements come with no downsides except for some minor hunger and piety cost, so you can also use magic and abilities if you wish.

Later on come gifts of weapons, armour, shields, and ammo biased towards usefulness. Since these behave like reduced-potency scrolls of acquirement, many of them will be of little permanent use, but by the end game you will likely find yourself using at least a few pieces of god-given equipment. Okawaru is also a less restrictive means of getting this equipment than Trog (the only other god who gifts weapons).

With the abundance of experience available in the post-game, the value of Heroism decreases for characters that are highly specialized. Highly specialized characters may find it favorable to switch from Okawaru to a god with more favorable abilities (such as The Shining One) before taking on dangerous post-game branches such as The Tomb or Pandemonium. If you do plan on abandoning Okawaru, be sure to have a relatively safe place to explore while facing his retribution or at least good escape potential (such as Blink).

Okawaru is one of the few gods you can abandon while keeping permanent benefits granted via worship (gifted items).

History
Prior to 0.18, Finesse could be blocked by stasis, both Okawaru's abilities costed more piety, but lasted longer even at low Invocations skill.

Prior to 0.17, Finesse caused magic contamination.

Prior to 0.16, Okawaru would only give ammo for skills of level 8 and higher, and would grant piety for praying over enemy corpses (the stronger, the better).

Prior to 0.14, allowing your allies to die incurred piety loss and the Demonspawn Demonic Guardian mutation was suppressed.

Prior to 0.13, Okawaru didn't care about the death of elementals.
