Royal Jelly

Useful Info
The Royal Jelly is the jelly boss of the Slime Pits. Located in the center of Slime:5, it will not emerge until you've entered the stone structure it resides in (or you make enough noise nearby to awaken it), giving you plenty of time to clear the rest of the floor first.

It has an impressive amount of HP, powerful acidic melee attacks, exceptional speed, and an unusual defense mechanism: whenever it's damaged, it spawns various powerful jelly-type monsters to attack you (azure jellies, death oozes, and acid blobs). Fortunately, it cannot pursue you up stairs, allowing you to abort attempts at killing it that you don't feel confident you can complete.

Killing the Royal Jelly causes two things to happen:

*The translucent walls of the four central vaults that the Royal Jelly guarded will come crumbling down, allowing you access to the treasure.
*Jiyva, the god of slimes, immediately ceases to exist once its only sentient worshiper dies. You can prevent this deicide by worshiping Jiyva yourself before killing TRJ, but killing such a high-ranking jelly will result in penance.

Tips & Tricks
How To Kill It
*Melee fighters should not simply charge in and bash the thing. Even with corrosion resistance and heavy armour, having eight corrosive opponents attacking you repeatedly will quickly send your offensive capabilities and your AC plummeting, leaving you weak and very vulnerable. Always soften it up before engaging it in melee, and buff heavily: Potions of haste, might and brilliance can help you deal lethal damage to TRJ before its reinforcements make life unbearable. Berserking also works, but might run out too quickly, and limits your other options considerably.
*Stealthy stabbers may be tempted to try to kill it in a single blow, followed by a timely teleport to safety. This is entirely possible, but TRJ has enough HP to survive all but the most highly-skilled assassination attempts. Try it at your own risk: equip a dagger for maximum stabbing damage, and be prepared to change strategies should it suddenly wake up.
*Fighting TRJ in one of the central corridors restricts how many monsters can reach you. Just be prepared for the angry jelly mob once you're done.
*TRJ retreats behind its spawned jellies periodically, forcing you to fight through them. Attack wands, Bolt spells, silver javelins, and smite-targeted attacks will all help to pierce through the surrounding jellies. Or, summon your own allies while adjacent to TRJ and box it in before attacking (works best in the corridors).
*Ranged weapon fighters can just pelt the Royal Jelly with projectiles, as it no longer heals by consuming them. Kiting it will still be difficult, as it's almost as fast as a centaur and you'll likely have to deal with the ranged attacks of the acid blobs it spawns.
*Banishing TRJ via Lugonu's ability doesn't unlock the vault, meaning you'll need some way to deal with stone walls. Corrupting the floor will open the vaults easily. Failing all else, a trip to the Abyss to kill TRJ will be necessary.
*TRJ is a natural creature, and thus vulnerable to torment. Reading two or three scrolls of torment will drop it to near death, and a few Bolt spells or smite-targeted attacks will kill it despite the surrounding army. Just be aware that this strategy will also leave your own HP dangerously low (rN+++, Statue Form, or being undead are highly recommended).
*If you decide to use summoning magic, you can't do better than Dragon's Call. Interspersing this with other high-level summons can create a wall of units capable of matching TRJ's allies. You'll need to plan ahead, of course: 18 or 19 Summonings skill, high intelligence, a ring of wizardry, and Recall are the bare minimum, with a method of channeling or spare potions of magic being highly recommended.
*Worshipers of Trog can also benefit from summons; a small pack of berserk iron trolls or stone giants should survive long enough to deal tremendous damage to TRJ before being melted away.
*Attack TRJ 1-2 times so it spawns jellies/oozes, read a scroll of immolation, then kill any of the spawns to set off a chain reaction. This strategy risks self-immolation, so ensure that you can kill one of the spawns at a distance immediately after reading the scroll (orb of destruction or a cloud spell work well). Being hasted helps, giving TRJ less time to respond to your appearance and move out of explosion range. Having rF+++ or a potion of resistance is useful as a failsafe in case you get caught in the blast.
*TRJ can be polymorphed if your Evocations is fairly high and you reduce its MR with a scroll of vulnerability or two, but this is generally inadvisable. Succeeding will immediately create a very large number of jellies, and due to TRJ's high HD, whatever it turns into will also be dangerous; expect titans, high-end dragons, or shrikes. If you do polymorph TRJ, it won't spit out extra jellies every time it's hit, and killing it will still unlock the rune vaults; after dealing with an army of jellies, taking a polymorphed TRJ down will be fairly simple by comparison.

How To Escape It
*TRJ will not follow you upstairs, but its generated slimes will. If you plan on running back upstairs mid-fight, expect some of its spawns to follow you.
*If you need to escape the floor without pursuing jellies following you up, Haste will also allow you to make a fairly safe escape; TRJ will keep up with you, but nothing else will. If you wish to actually outrun TRJ, you'll likely need both Haste and boots of running or a timely casting of Swiftness.
*If you've accidentally created an army of jellies and need to abort, heal up and then stair dance so you can clear out the reinforcements without dealing with too many of them at a time. Entering the floor from different staircases will let you avoid being immediately surrounded.
*Shatter, while ineffective against everything you'll find in the Slime Pits, can be used to break open the loot vaults and skip the fight entirely. It is, however, very difficult to cast as well as very loud and will likely attract the attention of every slime on the entire floor.
*Of course, if you wish to avoid this entire mess, you can simply worship Jiyva and waltz in when your piety is high enough. Most of the treasure will inevitably get eaten, but you'll at least be able to make off with the rune and whatever artefacts were present.

History
*Prior to 0.23, exploding the Royal Jelly with Uskayaw's Grand Finale didn't generate any jellies.
*Prior to 0.19, the Royal Jelly could eat items and could heal itself when shot with anything other than stones.
*Prior to 0.16, the Royal Jelly did not immediately spit out a large number of jellies when polymorphed, making it a viable combat strategy.
*Prior to 0.15, hitting the Royal Jelly could generate brown oozes as well.
*Prior to 0.11, the Royal Jelly was not able to regenerate naturally. This made the fight much easier to complete over several small assaults.

Useful Info
Hydras are notoriously dangerous melee monsters found most often in the Lair and the Swamp. They begin life with 4-8 heads, but grow two more and heal significantly whenever they lose one. This usually happens when a player or trap deals slashing damage to it, and careless use of claws, axes, or swords can result in prolonged and deadly combat.

Fortunately, there are ways to hurt them without them growing stronger. Blunt and piercing weapons injure them as normal, and flaming edged weapons will remove heads and cauterize the wound, preventing the normal regrowth. Ranged weapons (except for hand axes) and spells also function without issue.

Hydras cannot fly, but they swim quickly through water. Lava will effectively stop them, however.

While exploring the bottom floor of the Swamp, beware the Lernaean hydra. This unique hydra is exponentially more lethal than normal.

Tips & Tricks
*Hydras with additional heads only get more attacks per turn, not more HD, XP, or MR.
*Hydras max out at 20 heads, at which point they get 20 individual melee attacks per turn. Don't let this happen.
*If you manage to get a hydra to 0 heads without it dying from HP damage, it immediately dies anyway.
*The Summon Hydra spell lets you call a friendly 4-9 headed hydra to fight for you, but only for a brief time.
*They have poison resistance, so poison and Mephitic Cloud won't work.
*If attempting to escape, remember that hydras cannot open doors.
*Here are some tips for edged-weapon users:
**Use a flaming weapon to not only avoid regrowth and healing, but to reduce the hydra's damage output with each hit. The Fire Brand spell can give you one long enough for this purpose even at very low spell power.
**Use a non-edged weapon of the same skill, such as:
***Maces and Flails: Not an issue.
***Short Blades: Use a Quick blade or dagger. Fighting a hydra with a dagger is still not recommended unless you have Stabbing bonuses. Invisibility is quite useful here, since they neither see nor sense it.
***Polearms: Use a spear, trident, or demon trident.
***Staves: Use a quarterstaff or enhancer staff.
***Axes and Long Blades: There are no safe options. Use spells, wands, or a weapon you aren't skilled in (only recommended with high , berserking, or other buffs).
***Unarmed Combat: Only characters with Claws 3 are at risk of severing heads. Ghouls and Felids only have one level of claws, but Trolls will have to find another way.
**Invocations:
***Makhleb: Greater Servants can easily kill hydras.
***Beogh: Smite works, but at a high piety cost.
***Elyvilon: Hydras are natural beasts, and can be pacified easily.
***Lugonu: With high Invocations, you may be able to send hydras to the Abyss.
**Spells:
***Conjurations: Most level 3+ Conjurations can kill a hydra in 3-6 hits, and even level 2's can soften them up significantly with enough time. Hydras leave poisonous corpses, so Ignite Poison will hurt it effectively and reliably.
***Summonings: 4-7 elementals or ice beasts can easily kill a hydra, though a hydra with a high number of heads may require more.
***Transmutations: Use Ice Form or unarmed Statue Form. Spider Form does not remove heads, but is generally less effective than Ice or Statue Form.
**Wands: Even at low Evocations, a wand of fire, wand of cold, wand of draining, or wand of fireball can usually kill a hydra in 2-5 hits. This is a safe course of action for most characters.

The following methods do not work:
*Polymorph: Hydras have high HD, and often turn into even toughter monsters. Storm dragons are a particularly common result.
*Low-Skill Archery: Hydras regenerate quickly; any method which relies on whittling down its HP will likely fail.
*Stair dancing: Climbing up or down stairs next to a hydra will give it a few free hits, which is possibly all it needs to kill you.
*Berserk With an Edged Weapon: While you may be able to deal more damage than the hydra can heal per hit, its damage output will be growing, and ending your berserk slowed and wounded next to an even stronger hydra than you started with is not ideal.

Undead Hydras
Hydra corpses that are raised as zombies or skeletons will have the same number of heads as the corpse; zero-headed corpses cannot be raised this way. Hydra simulacra may have more or less heads. In either case, you can slice their heads off as with normal hydras, but they will never grow back, even if a non-flaming weapon is used. Note that hydra simulacra can have horrifyingly high damage output if you lack cold resistance: +13-38 cold damage per head.

Spectral hydras created with Death Channel will have the same number of heads as the hydra when it died, but these can't be cut off.

Any of these undead hydras can be found as enemies throughout the dungeon, especially in the pestilence ending of the Swamp.

History
Prior to 0.12 hydras were not cold-blooded creatures, except the Lernaean hydra.

GiantTiger11: Fixed Out of Date Information

version012

Aptitude is a measure of how fast you can advance in a skill. You have a separate aptitude rating for each skill, and the higher your aptitude, the less experience you will need to advance the skill in question. Aptitudes are rated from -5 to 5, with 0 being average; the higher over that you are for your main skills, the better.

Your aptitudes are determined solely by your species.

As a result, certain species are biased or specialized towards certain backgrounds. For example, Deep Elves perform much better at magical backgrounds than purely melee-oriented ones, while the reverse is true for Minotaurs. One of the keys to winning the game is paying attention to your species' aptitudes, and choosing a playstyle that takes the most advantage of them. Luckily, the character select screen helps you with that, as backgrounds that your species has good aptitudes for are highlighted as "recommended".

Press
?%
in-game to see the big table of races and aptitudes.

Aptitude / XP formula
If you're interested in the actual math, an aptitude of
n
means that you need
2^(-n/4)
times as much exp to advance as a human.

Example: A Spriggan has a +4 aptitude in Stabbing. If it would take a Human 100 experience points to advance a level in Stabbing, it will take the Spriggan
2^(-4/4) -> 2^(-1) -> 0.5
times as much experience, or 50 experience points to advance a level.

Comparison Table
The table below shows the relative experience needed to go up a skill level, assuming that with the aptitude of 0, 100 experience is needed. For example an aptitude of -4 means 200 experience is required to go up a skill level, or twice as much as aptitude 0.

Corona is a level 1 Hexes spell which causes the target to glow with an aura of light. For the duration of the spell, the target will be easier to hit (you gain a to-hit bonus of 1d8+1). Multiple castings can stack, providing immense accuracy bonuses. A creature under the effect of Corona is described as 'softly glowing.'

This spell also allows you to see invisible creatures, outlining their silhouette with light. After determining which tile the enemy is in, use "Z" to target a monster you can't see. However, this is strictly a cure, not a preventative; becoming invisible also removes Corona's effect.

Enchanters and Arcane Marksmen start with this spell memorized.

GiantTiger11:

Evil (also "unholy") is a label used to describe immoral deeds, objects, forces, or beings. Evil is usually contrasted with good, which describes things that are beneficial and actively make the world a better place. In Dungeon Crawl, there are many sources of evil.

Note that the game does not shoehorn players into a "good" role. Your character has free will and may make use of evil items, magic, or gods as you please, or be completely indifferent to issues of good or evil altogether.

Evil monsters
These monsters are invariably evil, and many gods award piety for destroying them.

* All demons.
* All undead.

These monsters take damage from holy wrath branded weapons and Holy Word.

Hostile spellcasters (especially uniques) are usually considered evil in the eyes of the good gods, but do not necessarily take additional damage as if a demon or undead.

Evil species
The following player species are undead or demonic themselves, and often have some inborn motive to prey on other intelligent beings. Note that playing one of these does not mean you automatically have to traffic in evil (perform evil deeds, worship an evil god, etc). Nonetheless, characters of these species are banned from worshiping good gods, and are vulnerable to evil-smiting effects (such as holy wrath).

* Demonspawn
* Mummies
* Vampires
* Ghouls

Evil deeds
Good gods will punish followers for perpetrating any of the following acts.

* Knowingly drinking blood.
* Necromancy magic in any form, especially the Necromutation spell.
* Casting certain other "unholy" spells: Call Imp, Shadow Creatures, Summon Demon, Demonic Horde, Malign Gateway, Summon Greater Demon, and Summon Horrible Things.
* Cannibalism.
* Harming or killing non-hostile creatures, especially holy beings. This counts even if an ally does it.
* Intentionally harming your allies.
* Knowingly using evil or unholy items (below).

In addition, each good god has their own ideas of what constitutes evil behavior.

* Zin disapproves of followers becoming mutated, glowing, casting chaotic spells (most transmutations and a few summoning spells), or eating the flesh of any sentient being (not just cannibalizing your own species).
* The Shining One forbids dishonorable fighting - using poison in any form or attacking (non-evil) foes who are fleeing, unable to see you, paralysed, sleeping, confused, or otherwise "helpless".
* Elyvilon punishes followers who harm living creatures while praying.

Luckily, if you follow a good god, the game will prompt you before any forbidden action, asking you if you're sure you want to do that. This prevents you from accidentally violating your god's commandments (and incurring divine retribution).

Evil items
These dreaded items were either forged by demons or created through the suffering of others, and exist only to bring further misery into the world. Good gods find the use of such items to be offensive and will punish followers for intentionally using them.

* Weapons with pain, draining, vampiricism, and distortion brands
* Demonic blades, tridents, and whips
* Wands of draining
* Scrolls of unholy creation and torment
* Staff of death
* Lantern of shadows

Evil gods
These gods are malevolent and require constant killing and blood sacrifices to gain their favour. They often rule over demonic or undead beings, as well. Good goods will severely punish worshipers who abandon them for one of these gods.

* Lugonu, the chaos god of the Abyss.
* Beogh, the bloodthirsty god of orcs.
* Kikubaaqudgha, a terrible demon-god of Necromancy.
* Yredelemnul, god of death and the undead.
* Makhleb, the chaos god of bloodshed and destruction.

Evil places
Otherworldly realms of evil, home to demons or the undead. Visiting these places is not an evil act in and of itself, but you are certain to encounter much evil here.
Ambiguity in the Crawl notion of 'Evil'
Although the good gods in Crawl are portrayed as adhering invariably to moral absolutes, to the extent that even the unwitting use by the player's character of items tagged 'evil' is cause for divine punishment, there is a certain degree of ambiguity in the notion of evil in Stone Soup. Consider that the ordinary practice of an adventurer is to kill and in many cases eat an entire dungeon full of living beings, many of them sapient. In other words, a player can expect, even in low-rune runs, to perform actions constitutive of genocide. Devotion to one of the good gods hardly alters this. It would not be unusual for a favored worshipper of The Shining One, for example, an ostensibly “good” god who frowns on indiscriminate slaughter, to nevertheless kill all, and eat many, of the elves, orcs and nagas in the entire dungeon.

It is unclear what if anything the various societies of dungeon denizens, who, judging by the absence of intra-monster violence within the dungeon, are wholly peaceful, have done to deserve this horrific retribution. On the face of it, the adventurer is simply seeking the Orb. Since “evil”-aligned adventurers act in essentially the same way that “good” ones do in pursuit of this goal, it is unlikely that the finding of this orb is a sufficiently good act in itself to justify the avalanche of butchery.

In the final analysis, it seems that Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is the story of a peaceful, multi-cultural and multi-species society falling victim to a single adventurer's avarice and quest for glory. By the time the worshiper of Zin has waded through the rivers of blood he must spill in order to claim the Orb, it is more than a little difficult to distinguish him from a devotee of Makhleb.

Against the background of the game's overarching narrative, namely murder, cannibalism, genocide and theft on an industrial scale introduced to utopia, the Necromantic spell “Regeneration”, a spell anathematised as “evil” by the “good” gods, hardly compares.

Poison Arrow is a level 6 Conjurations/Poison Magic spell which damages and poisons a target. It is effective even against enemies with poison resistance; 30% of its damage is irresistible, and it can poison any natural monster.

Strategy
This spell has a much higher variance in damage output than most conjurations, but its average damage to non-resistant creatures is actually on par with Lehudib's Crystal Spear, when the lingering poison damage is taken into account. Thus, it works by far the best in branches where most or all of the creatures are not poison resistant, somewhat less effectively in branches that are home to demons, and rather badly in branches that are populated by undead. It can be quite useful against the draconians in Zot, since only the green ones are poison resistant.

History
Prior to 0.6, 60% of Poison Arrow's damage was irresistible.
