Hauzer: /* Strategy */ Added a note about the possibility of killing Jyiva.

{{version020}}
[[File:Jiyva altar.png]] ''Slime for the Slime God!''

{{flavour|Jiyva is the ancient deity of the slimes. Followers are expected to support the spread and satiation of their fellow slimes by allowing them to consume items, and are forbidden from harming any slimes. Jiyva will even occasionally consume items left elsewhere in the dungeon by followers. Especially favoured followers will become as shapeless as their god, as their attributes and mutations shift around under Jiyva's influence.

Jiyva's followers can request jellies, turn monsters to slime, and eventually remove their harmful mutations. As their piety grows, Jiyva will, with increasing frequency, drop jellies into the dungeon; rearrange followers' attributes based on their skills and armour; and grant mutation gifts. Slimes will never harm a follower of Jiyva, and Jiyva demands the same conduct in return.

Jiyva likes it when you sacrifice items by allowing slimes to consume them.

Jiyva strongly dislikes it when you attack fellow slimes or you kill slimes.

Note that Jiyva does not demand training of the Invocations skill. All abilities are purely based on piety.}}

As Jiyva is the amorphous god, its name is also shapeless and will be slightly different in each game: Jiyva Juub, Jiyva Jichodgh, Jiyva Jojaun...

==Appreciates==
*Allowing slimes to devour items.

==Deprecates==
*Attacking and killing slimes.
*Inactivity (loses about 1 [[Piety]] every 400 turns).

==Altar==
Unlike most altars, Jiyva's isn't guaranteed to be found in the [[Ecumenical Temple]] or [[the Dungeon]]. It is possible for the altar to be found at these locations, but very rare. The most common location for easily accessible altar is in [[Lair]] levels 5 to 6, next to entrance to the Slime Pits.

There is a guaranteed altar at the final level of [[the Slime Pits]] and a chance for it to show up on the earlier levels. It can also be randomly generated in [[the Abyss]].

==Given Abilities==
'''[[Piety|Piety level -]]''': "Squelcher"
*All slime and eye monsters turn neutral. (Passive)
'''[[Piety|Piety level *]]''': "Ooze"
*'''Request jelly''': Summons a neutral [[jelly]] to devour items. (2 MP, 20-40 Food, 1-2 Piety)
'''[[Piety|Piety level **]]''': "Jelly"
*When your fellow slimes consume an item, you receive a [[piety]]/200 chance of increasing you satiation by 70 (a [[sultana]]). (Passive)
'''[[Piety|Piety level ***]]''': "Slime Creature"
*You are shielded from [[corrosive]] effects. This functions exactly like wearing a [[ring of resist corrosion]]. (Passive)
'''[[Piety|Piety level ****]]''': "Dissolving [Species]"
*'''Slimify''': Coats your weapon with slime for a few turns, which turns enemies into slimes. This only works against monsters with [[undead]] or [[natural]] holiness. (4 MP, 100-200 Food, 8-12 Piety)
*When your fellow slimes consume an item, you receive a [[piety]]/200 chance of recovering some [[MP]]. The amount depends on the price of the item. (Passive)
'''[[Piety|Piety level *****]]''': "Blob"
*'''Cure Bad Mutations''': Removes a randomly selected bad mutation. (8 MP, 200-400 Food, 15-23 Piety)
*When your fellow slimes consume an item, you receive a [[piety]]/200 chance of recovering some [[HP]]. The amount depends on the price of the item. (Passive)
'''[[Piety|Piety level ******]]''': "Royal Jelly"
*Hits that take 25% or more of your maximum [[HP]] will generate friendly, high-end jellies, similar to the effect of [[the royal jelly]]. [[Symbol of Torment]] doesn't count. (Passive)
*'''Unlock the Slime Pits vaults''': The walls that block access to the slimy [[rune]] and other goodies will be removed. (Passive)

In addition, Jiyva will do the following:
*'''Gain random mutations''': Jiyva gives mutations as gifts, including rare [[Jiyva mutations|mutations unique to Jiyva]]. This occurs only if you can safely mutate: [[mummies]], [[ghoul]]s, [[vampire]]s below satiated, or [[lich form]] characters are not eligible.
*'''Stat shuffling''': Your stats are modified depending on your skills and the [[encumbrance rating]] of your body armour. The sum of all your stats does not change.

==Punishments==
{{flavour|Jiyva does not appreciate abandonment, and will call down fearful punishments on disloyal followers!

Jiyva's vengeance is swift and gurgling. All slimes turn against those who offend Jiyva, and Jiyva ensures a plentiful supply of slimes, both by calling jellies to ooze from the cracks in the walls and floor, and turning other nearby enemies into dangerous slimes. Victims, too, will find their own bodies becoming unstable; regularly transmuting into strange forms and acquiring debilitating mutations.}}

Upon abandonment, all slimes will immediately turn hostile, and Jiyva will occasionally punish you with one of the following forms of [[divine retribution]]:

You receive a few [[bad mutation]]s. These mutations bypass all forms of mutation resistance except for [[Zin]]'s protection.
*[[Polymorph]]s you into a bat, spider, or statue.
*Floods you with [[Glow|mutagenic radiation]]
*Sends a number of [[durably summoned]] high level slimes, eyeballs, and spores to attack you.

==Strategy==
*Jiyva is utilized best by a high level, late game player character. Moreso compared to the other gods, Jiyva can pose inconveniences to the early game character; slimes getting in the way of your spells, slimes eating items, and slimes running over levels and killing dudes justify Jiyva's placement far from the [[Ecumenical Temple]]. High level PCs tend to acquire two things; lots of bad mutations, and lots of junk laying around the dungeon. It is easy for someone who has already cleared the main dungeon to rapidly max out their piety score and remove all negative mutations, while retaining any positive ones and gaining plenty of new ones.
*This doesn't mean that Jiyva cannot be utilized by an early game character, though. Strong characters who can clear floors quickly without much rest will have fewer items consumed by slimes. Or go stealthily; kill things quietly, lure enemies around one by one, and pick up as many items as you care to before the slimes wake up. Do not be concerned about the potentially lost EXP from early floors; those ogre kills would have been a drop in the bucket for leveling, and if you were planning to go Jiyva eventually it would save you some god wrath later, or the handicap of godlessness until you reach the Slime Pits. The mutations you gain, though random, are usually biased in favor of good ones (so do not expect to keep your auxiliary armor for long).
*Although you can (and will) freely mutate and filter out the bad ones with the appropriate invocation, don't expect to become a superhero. Jiyva will change your mutations unpredictably, and you may get [[horns]], [[antennae]], a [[beak]], [[claws]], [[talons]], or [[hooves]] which may restrict your choice of armor. If you're a race who ignores most equipment slots (e.g. [[ogre]], [[troll]], [[felid]], [[octopode]]), these are very welcome.
*Your [[stash]] will be put at risk by Jiyva's slimes, but there are ways to safeguard it. Putting your ''entire'' cache of items on an up-staircase, and being extremely quick to grab what you need will maximize the chance that Jiyva ''won't'' have time to spawn a slime on that level. Even better, so long as you have [[stasis]], you can put your stash on a teleport trap and it'll be untouchable. However, Jiyva will randomly eat items throughout the Dungeon, so the only way to keep something completely safe is to carry it with you.
*Jiyva's stat shuffling will focus your stats depending on numerous factors; mostly to make the best use of your current skilling, but also to accomodate your body armor better.
*Be forewarned that eye monsters summoned by [[Mnoleg]] or [[Pan lord]]s will be hostile. Jiyva won't be offended if you kill them. [[Shapeshifter]]s transformed into slime or eye monsters are also safe to kill.
*Jiyva is one of the few gods you can abandon while keeping permanent benefits granted via worship (desirable mutations). However these may be offset by the bad mutations imposed upon leaving.
*Note that even a god can die! If you kill The Royal Jelly without first converting to (or being penanced by) Jyiva, you will have killed its last worshiper, thereby killing the god itself! You will get a message about "the power ruling this place" vanishing, with all of Jyiva's altars being removed from the game at that point.

==Guides==
*[[Buddy23Lee's Troll monk of Jiyva ("slime troll") guide]] (0.12)

==History==
[[0.19]], Jiyva's jelly prayer paralysis was removed.

[[0.19]], Slime Pits are now found at Lair: 5-6

Prior to [[0.14]], Jiyva's abilities were based off of your [[Invocations]] skill.

'''Darkness''' is a level 7 [[Hexes]] spell which reduces the [[LOS]] that creatures can see you (and that you can see other creatures) by 25%. Under normal circumstances, this reduces LOS by two tiles. When combined with a [[lantern of shadows]] or the [[demonspawn]] [[Demonspawn_mutations#Nightstalker|nightstalker]] mutation, the spell only reduces LOS by one tile more.

*Darkness is an excellent spell for situations where you don`t want to be seen, obviously. [[Quaff]]ing a '''potion of restore abilities''' immediately heals all [[stat]] damage your character is currently suffering from, restoring your stats to their maximal values. This can be used to avoid the [[stat zero|negative effects]] of having a stat below 1. It also has a secondary effect, immediately ending the cool down period for any [[breath weapon]]s you may have used. For most species, the lost stats will recover over time, but you can immediately restore them by quaffing a [[potion of restore abilities]]. Hey Hauzer? Honestly, you can stop going through and adding those Version Unknown tags on pages. If there's no page, it's assumed that the version is unknown. It's more helpful to go through, finding things which haven't changed, and raising the version tag from 0.14 to 0.15. If you see something that isn't ready to update to 0.15, but you can't make the update yourself (for instance, you know that certain numbers are wrong, but aren't sure what the new numbers should be), it's helpful to go to the Discussion tab for that article and post about it there; oftentimes, another user will come along and code dive for the details. --[[User:MoogleDan|MoogleDan]] ([[User talk:MoogleDan|talk]]) 13:05, 29 August 2014 (CEST)
:Yes, if there's no version headline, the logical assumption is that the version is unknown. However, adding ''<nowiki>{{version}}</nowiki>'' simply makes that more explicit. Explicit is better than implicit, is it not? It's a mundane task, I agree, but it's not like I'm chasing the affected pages. If a page happens to be without ''<nowiki>{{version}}</nowiki>'', I simply do a quick edit and add it. ==Useful Info==
'''Trolls''' are hulking brutes that lumber into melee, tearing apart their opponents with powerful attacks. Although they lack resistances, they regenerate [[HP]] quickly and are fairly durable for early monsters. They can be encountered as early as Dungeon:5 and are often found in the [[Orcish Mines]]. More powerful trolls will harass you throughout most of the game.

==Tips & Tricks==
*Use caution when you first encounter trolls; low-level melee fighters may not be able to survive long enough in melee to land a killing blow, and trollish regeneration makes it so they always win wars of attrition. Use wands or some other form of ranged attack to soften them up before engaging.
*Mephitic Cloud can render them fit for nuking from afar, but [[stabbing]] still has risks. They may still land a hit or two in melee, so don't move in for the kill unless you've got full health.
*Butchering a troll [[corpse]] sometimes produces a [[troll hide]]. You can turn this into a superior [[troll leather armour]] by using a [[scroll of enchant armour]] on it. This provides you with slightly better defense than [[leather armour]] and a source of health [[regeneration]], but at a cost to your [[satiation]].
A '''pressure plate''' is a [[trap]] which inflicts no direct damage; instead it causes some pre-scripted, generally bad event to happen. They are mechanical traps, so you can [[levitate]]/[[fly]] over them or disarm them with the [[Traps & Doors]] skill if you manage to find one before stepping on it.

===Possible Results===
*'''Spiders''': You are immediately surrounded by eight [[spider]]s.
{{flavour|A basket of spiders falls from above!}}
*'''Cloud Trap''': Creates one of the following clouds, centered on you: mephitic ([[confusion]]), [[poison]]ous, calcifying ([[petrify|petrification]]), flame, freezing, chaos ([[bad mutations]]), or miasma (poison, [[slow]], and [[rot]]).
{{flavour|A coloured vial drops from a hatch in the ceiling!}}
*'''Cells''': In a corridor at least nine tiles long, indestructible gates shut down on either end and four doors to single cell chambers appear in each wall (eight total). Behind each door waits a monster of greatly varying strength, from [[giant newt]]s to [[ogre]]s, [[ettin]]s, and [[freezing wraith]]s. The last door opened reveals an exit behind the monster. All monsters are initially sleeping; spellcasting inside the trap will wake them, this also includes blinking and teleporting.
{{flavour|Iron gates slam shut around you.

You now see doors in the walls!}}
*'''Monster Chamber''': A portion of the wall adjacent to the pressure plate will disappear, revealing a room full of monsters which immediately attack you.
Many monsters are placed during dungeon creation, but more are created over time. Specifically, there is a "monster generation rate" (MGR), and every 5 turns, there is a (5 in MGR) chance of a monster spawning somewhere on the level. The MGR's value varies:
* Main dungeon: starts at 240 for the first 3k turns, then linear increase (less spawning) to 1440 at 15k turns, after which generation stops entirely. After 1k turns, the odds of badly [[out-of-depth]] monsters start rising.
* [[Pandemonium]]: Same but going from 50 to 300, and "out-of-depth" is moot.
* [[Hell]]: starts at 240, increases after 500 turns.
* [[Abyss]]: 5 (monster generation every 5 turns). For worshipers of [[Cheibriados]], the rate is halved.
* Orb run: set to 8, (16 if you are a follower of [[Cheibriados]]), and the monster set is special:
**[[Tier-4 demon]] or [[Tier-3 demon]]: 30%
**Random [[demon]]: 30%
**Any monster from the [[Pandemonium]]: 20%
**[[Orb Guardian]]: 15%
**[[Tier-1 demon]] or [[Tier-2 demon]]: 5%
Crawl sometimes [[Monster_generation|generates]] unusually hard '''out-of-depth''' (OOD) monsters to keep you on your toes. The possibility of out of depth monsters increases the longer you spend on a level (although the overall spawn rate progressively slows after 3,000 turns on that level, stopping altogether at 15,000 turns; see [[scumming]] for more details).

*OODs do not apply to any portal vaults, any 1-level branches, Zot, Pan, Abyss and Hells.
*OODs do not apply for the first 700 turns on D:1, and are applied slightly less often for 584 turns on D:2.
* All other levels have a straight 14% chance of moderate OOD fuzz for each monster at level generation, and the chances of moderate OODs go up to 100% after a ramp-up period. After 7800 turns, all the monsters are moderately OOD.
*Under normal circumstances, the max possible difference is 5 levels.
*There are two mechanisms for generating "super out-of-depth" monsters; one can generate monsters up to (current level * 2) + 4. This is the one used by vaults: the glyph used in vault definitions is an '8'; the other is current level + an average of two random numbers between 0 and 26. Super OOD monsters are quite rare, unless you [[scumming|scum]] on a floor for several thousand turns. They can happen after you reach 1400-117*depth turns (e.g. on D:13, they can happen at level generation) and the initial chance is 0.02%. After 3000 turns have passed, the chance increases until you reach 12,000 turns, at which point all monsters generated (if any) are created using the second super OOD method only.
*[[Vault]]s will often contain overly powerful monsters: the vault designer can put in a random OOD monster via the above mentioned "8" glyph, or can specifically hard-code a difficult monster in a vault that can appear early on.
==Tips & Tricks==
Hobgoblins are susceptible to simple tactics: soften them up at a distance using missiles; lead them over traps; or, if you're very low on [[HP]] and adjacent to one, [[pillar-dance]].

'''Speed randomisation''' is a game mechanic designed to add unpredictability to monster behavior, and to nerf [[pillar dancing]]. Monsters normally get to take a number of monster turns per player turn based on their speed: fast monsters act more often, slow act less. However, the game will occasionally and randomly give enemies 90% or 110% of the amount of time they should get, allowing you to occasionally gain a tile of distance between yourself and an equal speed pursuer, or to allow a pursuing enemy to occasionally attack you as you flee.

A monster who gets two actions due to speed randomisation MUST spend one of the two actions on a move.

==History==
Speed randomisation was first introduced in [[0.6]]. It was modified in [[0.7]] to ensure that enemies couldn't spend both actions attacking.
[[Pillar dancing]] is a technique for avoiding a battle until a more opportune moment. To pillar dance, simply flee a pursuing enemy around a small "pillar" of walls (1×1, 2×2, etc.) in the middle of an open, mapped-out area. By forcing the monster to move in order to keep sight of you, it will have a very hard time attacking you, even with ranged weapons; by staying in a mapped part of the level, you reduce the risk of stumbling across more monsters. Doing this can let you restore missing [[HP]] and [[MP]] (be aware that your pursuer will also be healing) or wait out a summoned monster's duration in safety.

Pillar dancing is not without risks, however. Faster monsters will simply catch up to you, rendering the process pointless. Due to [[speed randomisation]], even enemies with equal speed will occasionally be able to act against you, possibly negating any health restored. Wandering monsters may stumble upon you as you're running, making the eventual fight that much harder. Even the cost of running can work against you; races with difficult dietary needs may not wish to spend turns needlessly.

That being said, it's still a situationally useful technique. It can minimize damage received while a caster recovers the point or two of MP needed for one last spell, and players with quickened HP regeneration can often outpace any damage taken. Fast characters will have an easier time of it, but are usually better off simply escaping the enemy and running up[[stairs]] to rest.

==History==
Prior to [[0.6]], monster speed was fixed, making pillar dancing much safer.

There are three [[good gods]] in ''Dungeon Crawl'''s pantheon who are allied together in the fight against evil: [[Zin]] the Law-Giver, [[the Shining One]], and [[Elyvilon]] the Healer.

==Characteristics==
The good gods, being allies, have several features in common:
*Strict codes of conduct to which followers must abide.
*Hatred for all [[evil]] monsters, gods, weapons, and magic ([[Necromancy]]).
*No [[divine retribution]] for leaving their religion or converting to another god, unless it is [[evil]]. [[Penance]] is still incurred, but the god simply does not act upon it. This is true even when switching to another good god.
*A sizable chunk of starting [[piety]] for switching to another good god.
*Several defensive and protective powers granted to their followers, requiring the training of [[Invocations]].
*Good gods may intervene to save your life on an otherwise fatal blow.
*Undead [[species]] and [[demonspawn]] are not allowed to worship good gods.

==Code of Conduct==
The good gods share a code of conduct. Common elements across all three are:
*No drinking of [[blood]].
*No [[cannibalism]].
*No [[Necromancy]].
*No [[unholy]] items.
**Wielding unholy weapons is fine, but actually attacking with one is not allowed. This allows you to take advantage of non-combat benefits provided by unholy [[artefact]] weapons safely. Wearing unholy armour, however, is immediately frowned upon.
*No attacking non-hostile holy beings.

== Additional requirements ==

Each god has additional requirements based on their likes and dislikes:

*[[Zin]] hates [[chaotic|chaos]] and [[mutation]]s, but rewards selfless donations of [[gold]], even taking a [[tithe]] from the gold followers pick up.
*[[The Shining One]] demands honourable combat and the slaying of [[undead]] and [[demon]]s. The Shining One also appreciates followers scouring the world to encounter its denizens and determine whether they must be purged of evil.
*[[Elyvilon]] preaches a creed of pacifism and prefers that you [[pacify]] monsters instead of killing them. Sacrificing weapons, especially evil ones, will also earn the Healer's favour.

*'''[[Magic contamination]]''': This is the most dangerous, as it will very likely leave you with some [[bad mutations]] as it decays.
*'''[[Corona]]''': This spell makes you easier to hit, in addition to negating invisibility. Not many monsters cast it, but [[gnoll shaman]]s, [[the Enchantress]], and some [[player ghost]]s do. It can be resisted via [[magic resistance]].
The '''Gift Timeout''' is the period during which you cannot receive any more gifts from your current [[god]]. It begins the turn you receive a gift, and decreases every time you gain [[piety]] (this piety is only applied toward ending the gift timeout). The exact duration of this period varies from god to god. Missile gifts have a lower timeout.

The only way to speed up the Gift Timeout period is to increase the rate at which you gain piety. Wearing an [[amulet of faith]] will speed it up significantly, but be aware of the negative consequences before doing so.

==Gods==
Gods which grant gifts based on the Gift Timeout method include:
*[[Beogh]] - Weapons, armour and ammo.
*[[Jiyva]] - Mutations. These gifts don't cost any piety.
*[[Kikubaaqudgha]] - Two [[randart]] Necromancy spellbooks at the appropriate piety levels.
*[[Nemelex Xobeh]] - Decks of [[deck of war|war]] and [[deck of escape|escape]].
*[[Okawaru]] - Weapons and armour.
*[[Sif Muna]] - Spellbooks.
*[[Trog]] - Weapons.
*[[Vehumet]] - Offers learning [[Conjuration]] spells one at a time.
*[[Yredelemnul]] - Undead minions.

==History==
*Prior to [[0.15]], Nemelex Xobeh gifted various types of decks, not just those of war and escape.
*Prior to [[0.14]], Nemelex Xobeh could gift [[decks of dungeons]] and the types of gifted decks were dependent on the types of sacrificed items. Yredelemnul gifted [[freezing wraith]]s instead of [[vampire (monster) | vampires]].
*Prior to [[0.13]], Yredelemnul could gift [[rotting hulk]]s.
*Prior to [[0.12]], Vehumet gifted spellbooks.
*Prior to [[0.11]], Kikubaaqudgha didn't gift spellbooks, but instead guaranteed all Necromancy spells. Xom could grant permanent allies and he gifted far more items.

{{version015}}

'''Dungeon Sprint''' is a fast-paced Crawl variant in which you must explore a single brutally hard floor in pursuit of the [[orb of Zot]]. It begins by asking you to select your [[species]], [[background]], and which Dungeon Sprint map you'd like to attempt. Each map is a unique single floor for you to complete, but be aware that these are designed to be incredibly hard. The floorplan, monsters, and locations of items and shops are fixed, while the exact items and shops you find are usually random.

Over the course of a single floor you will find yourself jumping from fighting goblins and rats to high level [[unique]]s, including some bosses only found in Dungeon Sprint. In order to give you half a chance at being ready for them, Sprint features accelerated character growth; you gain XP toward levels and skills at 27× normal speed, and piety at 9× normal.

You can play Dungeon Sprint on any of the online servers, and the source code is also available online in case you want to look at it or change it yourself. Players can easily make a new level for Sprint to take place on by editing the file source/dat/des/variable/entry.des in the Sprint source code, the "dungeon-sprint" branch on git://git.develz.org/crawl-ref.git. Making new levels this way is actually pretty straightforward: Crawl's .des files aren't hard to read and change even for a non-programmer, and there's a how-to guide here.

==Maps==
There are currently eight Sprint maps.

*[[Red Sonja]]
*[[The Violet Keep of Menkaure]]
*[[The Ten Rune Challenge]]
*[[Fedhas' Mad Dash]]
*[[Ziggurat Sprint]]
*[[Thunderdome]]
*[[The Pits]]
*[[Arena of Blood]]
*[[Linesprint]]

==Trivia==
Dungeon Sprint was inspired by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomb_of_Horrors the Tomb of Horrors], a Dungeons & Dragons module from the 1970's notorious for being unfairly deadly.

==History==
Dungeon Sprint was initially invented by [[Chapayev]]. It was included as an official part of the downloadable version of ''Crawl'' in [[0.7]], and has had multiple maps added since then.
'''Death curses''' fall on any creature who kills a [[mummy (monster)|mummy]], [[guardian mummy]], [[mummy priest]], [[greater mummy]], [[Menkaure]], or [[Khufu]]. This does not apply to killing mummies that have been summoned in any way; only "naturally" occurring mummies have death curses.

The effect (and severity) of the curse mainly depends on the mummy itself, and can include [[death curse#Item curse|item cursing]] and all [[Necromancy]] miscast effects. Followers of [[Kikubaaqudgha]] with enough [[piety]] are resistant to these miscasts and curses.

As many curses only affect the creature that killed the mummy, have an ally strike the final blow if possible. (Note that killing mummys with a Spellforged Servitor will get you a death curse, as well as enslaving a mummy and getting it killed by another monster.)

Also, no curse is cast if a mummy is banished to the [[Abyss]], kills itself while [[confused]], falls down a [[shaft]], or is killed by [[giant spore]]s, [[ball lightning]], or [[trap]]s.
'''Dazed''' is a condition that can occur when a follower of [[Zin]] uses the Recite [[ability]], reading either from the book of ''Apostates'' or the ''Anathema'' book. Monsters affected by this will occasionally spend their actions standing around dazed instead of taking a productive action like moving toward you or attacking. A '''bolt trap''' is a [[trap]] which fires a [[bolt]] when stepped upon by a player or [[monster]]. It is the most damaging of the traps that fire damaging ammunition, followed by the [[spear trap]].

Bolt traps hold 3-11 +0 bolts and fire when stepped upon, dealing between 1 and 40 damage to the player, or just between 1 and 13 to a monster.

[[Repel Missiles]] and [[Deflect Missiles]] both reduce the chance of this trap being able to hit the player.
'''Flayed''' is a [[status effect]] which can be inflicted on you by [[flayed ghost]]s. Each time you are flayed, you'll "lose" a moderate amount of [[HP]] which is proportional to your max HP; each additional hit by it will increase the amount of flayed damage (but can never reduce you below 35 HP) and reset the effect's timer. This damage can be healed through normal means, and attacks which reduce you to 0 HP after being flayed are lethal, but the flayed damage itself is illusory; all such damage will be immediately healed the moment you kill the flayed ghost or spend enough time out of its [[line of sight]].
'''Zot Defence''' is a tower-defense-styled variation on [[Dungeon Crawl]]. After selecting one of the five available scenarios and character to play as, you are placed on a map and tasked with defending the [[Orb of Zot]] from all threats. Monsters will be generated in waves, swarming in from the upstairs. You must prevent the monsters from reaching the [[Orb of Zot]], which you may not pick up or apport.

During each turn in which a hostile monster stands over the Orb, you suffer one point of [[rot]] damage. Each time you go up one [[experience]] level, you receive a new special "Zot Ability" which will aid you in protecting the Orb; the use of these abilities expends Zot Points, which are gained concurrently with experience.

The waves of monsters grow in strength over time; at the end of each wave, an out-of-depth "boss" monster is generated. Every few waves, a [[rune]] is generated on the stairs along with the boss monster. You may pick up the Orb, and leave the dungeon with it, if you are carrying fifteen runes.
''This page is about the Flame [[Brand|brand]]. For the wand, see [[Wand of flame]]. For the card, see [[Deck of destruction#Flame card|Flame card]].''

The '''flame''' [[brand]] causes a launcher to deal fire damage instead of physical damage. Accuracy is unaffected, but the base damage is increased by 40%. If the missile has the brand, the ammo's [[mulch]] rate will be doubled, but if you are firing unbranded ammo with a launcher of flame, the mulch rate is unchanged.

It can be found on [[bow]]s, [[longbow]]s, [[crossbow]]s, [[sling]]s, or on any of their respective [[missile]]s. If you are using a launcher of flame and firing ammo with any other brand, only the ammo's brand will activate (although frost will be canceled).

==Strategy==
This brand can greatly increase damage against monsters vulnerable to fire, but is a severe handicap when facing anything with [[fire resistance]]. Don't bother enchanting a launcher of flame, as it will be useless against many dangerous foes.
''This page is about the item effect. For the card, see the article [[Curse card]].''

Some equipment that you come across will be '''cursed''', rendering it impossible to unequip until you find a way to break the curse. These items will look just like any other item until you equip or identify them, unless you are following [[Ashenzari]]. Depending on the nature of the specific item, this can be a minor irritant or a major hazard. Although useful cursed items appear occasionally, most cursed weapons and armour will have negative enchantment penalties, while cursed jewelry is usually designed to harm the wearer. Because of this, it is wise to careful about equipping unidentified items.

Followers of [[Ashenzari]] receive special bonuses for wearing cursed gear, and are given abilities that make it easier to curse your gear and maintain curses.

==Detecting Curses==
Any wieldable or wearable item can be cursed. Items that appear magical (i.e. runed or glowing items) are somewhat more likely to be, but items that appear mundane can also be cursed as well.

[[Identify]]ing an item will reveal whether it is cursed. If you cannot identify an item, there are three ways to discern the curse status of an item:
*Witnessing an enemy unequip the item.
*Equipping it yourself. Make sure to have a means of curse removal ready if you do this!
*Being a follower of [[Ashenzari]].

In all cases, the game will mark the item's cursed or uncursed status, even if it is otherwise unidentified.

==Uncursing Items==
*The most common method for uncursing items is to read a [[scroll of remove curse]]. This will uncurse all cursed items you are currently wearing, but has no effect on unequipped items in your inventory. These scrolls are thankfully very common.
*The main use for [[scrolls of enchant weapon]] and [[scrolls of enchant armour]] is to strengthen your equipment, but they have the added benefit of uncursing the item if it is cursed. Using these scrolls specifically to uncurse a single item is usually wasteful.
**Worshipers of [[Ashenzari]] are affected by the above scrolls differently. Scrolls of remove curse will only affect the equipped items you wish to uncurse, and enchantment scrolls will leave curses intact.
*Blessing your weapon with your [[god]]'s brand gift ([[Lugonu]]'s [[distortion]], [[the Shining One]]'s [[holy wrath]], or [[Kikubaaqudgha]]'s [[pain]]) will remove its curse as part of the upgrade.

==Item Cursing==
Uncursed equipment is normally safe to equip. However, items can ''become'' cursed in a variety of ways, including:
*A [[Mummy (monster)|mummy]]'s [[death curse]] will curse a single random piece of equipment in your inventory.
*Artifact items can have the "recurring curse" property - even if they are currently uncursed, they may automatically recurse themselves whenever they are equipped.
*Worshippers of [[Ashenzari]] will always receive cursed items from [[scrolls of acquirement]]. The items will otherwise be of normal acquirement quality.
*[[Miscast effect]]s from the [[Charms]] and [[Hexes]] schools of magic will sometimes curse your items.
*Using [[Ashenzari]] to turn your [[Scroll of remove curse|Scrolls of remove curse]] into scrolls of [[scroll of curse weapon|curse weapon]], [[scroll of curse armour|curse armour]], and/or [[scroll of curse jewellery|curse jewellery]].
*If a [[Curse card]] is drawn during [[Nemelex Xobeh]]'s wrath, it will curse one or more items in your inventory.

==History==

Prior to [[0.14]], curse scrolls would randomly generate throughout the dungeon. Also, cursed [[gloves]] and [[cloak]]s would prevent you from changing your [[ring]]s and [[body armour]] respectively.

Prior to [[0.12]], the player character was unable to butcher [[corpse]]s with cursed blunt weapons.

Prior to [[0.11]], you could read a [[scroll of detect curse]] to examine your inventory for cursed items, just like the obsolete spell.

Prior to [[0.6]], (and the removal of the [[Divinations]] school of magic), the [[Detect Curse]] spell allowed you to determine the cursed or uncursed status of all items in your [[inventory]] without any personal risk. This update also removed the [[Remove Curse]] spell, which uncursed any equipped items.
