Blowguns
Blowguns don't have a speed penalty when used with shields, and haven't since 0.10. I tried adding the info to the page but someone edited it out.

Species dependent handedness
Something that I found missing, or I can't find the article on the wiki is how species size can affect whether a weapon is one or two handed. For example, Long Swords and bigger long blades are all two handed for spriggans. I've had the same thing happen for quarterstaffs - one handed for some species and two handed for others. Is this info somewhere on the wiki? --Flun 15:04, 17 January 2013 (CET)
:The Size page clarifies that a bit, as does the Shields page. --MoogleDan 16:22, 17 January 2013 (CET)

Kekekela: /* Weapon attributes */ blowgun's speed penalty was removed as a side effect of removing hand and a half weapons

Introduction
Characters may wield weapons to attack enemies. Weapons may be divided into ranged and melee weapons. Occasionally, they may possess a brand or be an artefact.

Weapon attributes
The following is a table of all weapons in Crawl, aside from ammunition. Below is a short explanation of each field. This table has been partially updated for 0.11. Some notable changes: Ankuses have been removed.

Name
| The name of the item as it appears in Crawl.
Damage
| The base amount of damage the weapon does, before various bonuses and adjustments. <!-- From Henzell: Total is: Approximately: 1d(base*strength_bonus + slaying)*skill_bonus + 1d(to_dam) + various bonuses. Weapon brand is applied after monster AC reduction.
Strength bonus is usually < 1.5 (see str), skill bonus (both from weapon and Fighting skills) is randomized, averaging about 2.0 at max skill
Damage bonuses include +1d10 for might, -1dasp for 1.5-handed weapons with shield, -1d5 when Starving, and racial weapon bonus ( +1d3-1 for dwarves and demonspawn, +1 for orcs (more with Beogh)).-->
Hit
| To hit modifier for the weapon, before any other adjustments.
Speed
| This is actually the attack delay, which is multiplied by 10 to get the "percentages" you see in-game. (That is, attack delay 10 shows as 100%.) Every 2 levels of weapon skill lowers the delay by 1 unit. A weapon's minimum delay is half of its base delay (rounded down) or 7 (5 for sabres) whichever is lower. Speed brand cuts delay by half (round up), and haste cuts delay by a third (round randomly up or down). These effects stack, after the base cap, but there's an absolute cap of 2 for attack delay.
Mass
| How heavy a weapon is. Note that this is used for game calculations and is not the same as the weight as it appears in your inventory.
style=white-space:nowrap | Str weight
| A bigger strength weighting is better for strong characters, while a low strength weighting is better for dexterous characters.
Skill
| What skill is trained when using this weapon.
Hands
| How many hands are required to use the weapon. (Using a shield means using your weapon one-handed.) Double weapons currently (version 0.4.5) behave as two handed (i.e. require two free hands). All ranged weapons except blowguns suffer speed penalties when used one handed.
Size
| The size of the weapon. Large creatures can wield larger weapons, while small creatures are restricted in what sizes they can use. The order is little, small, medium, large, big.
Missile
| If the weapon uses a missile, what type does it need?
Throw
| Can you throw it?
Dam Type
| What category of damage does the weapon deal?
Prob
| A larger number indicates higher probability of acquiring through scrolls of acquirement.

Notes for ranged weapons:
* Half means a reloading time penalty if using a shield
* Damage field is used for bonus strength damage (string tension)
* Slings get a bonus from dexterity, not strength (as tension is meaningless)

Race variants
Weapons can have various race variants. Dwarven, Elven, Orcish, or Demonic. These have the following properties,

Dwarven weapons are more resistant to corrosion than normal weapons. Dwarves do slightly more damage with dwarven weapons. And randomly generated dwarven weapons have 50% chance of being +1 to hit, and 50% chance of being +1 to damage. So dwarven weapons generally have better +x,+y bonuses.

Elven weapons give to hit bonuses to elves who wield them. And they also have a chance of getting up to +2 to hit bonus.

Orcish weapons give damage bonuses to orcs who wield them, followers of Beogh get even higher damage bonuses as their piety rises. And they have a 50% chance of getting -1 to hit, and a 50% chance of getting +1 to damage.

Demonic weapons have very strong base types. They are not variants, but a different type of weapon. Demonspawn get a bonus using demonic weapons.

Of course, all weapons have a chance of being enchanted. But the race weapons have a chance of getting a little bit more.

Kekekela: /* Weapon attributes */ removed hand-and-a-half references...due to bugs introduced in 0.10 they have functioned as 1handers since then, and are formally removed in 0.12

Note that this is used for game calculations and is not the same as the weight as it appears in your inventory.
style=white-space:nowrap | Str weight
All ranged weapons suffer speed penalties when used one handed.

Beastly Appendage is a level 1 Transmutations spell which briefly gives you one of the following temporary Unarmed Combat-enhancing mutations:
*Horns - Prevented by use of helmets, but allows for an auxiliary headbutt.
*Talons - Prevented by use of boots or lack of feet, but allows for an auxiliary kick.
*Tentacles - Prevented by use of gloves, but deals more damage than a standard punch.
**Octopodes gain spiked tentacles instead, dealing even further damage.

The duration of these mutations is dependent upon your spell power. Sadly, you cannot cast it multiple times to get all three effects; casting it again simply extends the duration of your current mutation.

Transmuters begin with this spell memorized.

Strategy
Beastly Appendage can significantly improve the combat capabilities of low-level transmuters, though its effectiveness depends on which of the mutations you receive; Tentacles and Horns are much more powerful than Talons. If you're willing to wear boots and leave your hand slot empty, or only wear a cap or wizard hat, you can guarantee that only the more useful mutations will occur.

History
Beastly Appendage was added in 0.10.

In 0.11, Beastly Appendage will give you Claws instead of Tentacles.

Claws removed in 0.12

The Realm of Zot is the final branch in the game. It houses the goal of your quest, the legendary Orb of Zot, but its ferocious guardians won't simply let you walk in...

Useful Info
The Realm of Zot is 5 levels deep. Three locked portals to the Realm are always found on the last (27th) level of the Dungeon. To unlock them, you will require three runes of Zot.

The layout of the Realm of Zot is similar to the Elven Halls (a series of rooms interconnected by narrow corridors). The Realm is filled with creatures the likes of which you won't see outside of the branch, except for shapeshifters, which occasionally take on the form of creatures from the Realm of Zot,:

*Draconians of all hues: black, green, pale, mottled, purple, red, white and yellow. In addition to their hue, draconians always have a profession among the following: zealot, shifter, scorcher, knight, monk, annihilator, and caller. Some combinations can be deadly!
*Several types of dragons, including storm dragons and golden dragons.
*Ghost moths and moths of wrath
*The always-dangerous orb of fire.
*Death cobs!
*Killer Klowns!

The final level of the Realm of Zot houses the Orb of Zot. It is under guard by the largest and toughest group of monsters you will face, including Orb Guardians. Teleport will still work here, however it cannot be controlled, so it's in fact a very bad idea. Those with teleportitis should stay well away from here until they can negate the effect, either by curing the mutation or finding an item that prevents teleportation. If you've already explored the Dungeon and all branches, consider wandering around the Abyss or Pandemonium until you find such an item.

Visiting and clearing the Realm of Zot will have no effects on gameplay until you actually pick up the Orb. This action will trigger ascension, resulting in the closing of all portals (including Hell) and fast monster generation of demons and Pandemonium lords everywhere. You should thus pick up the Orb only when you are ready to finish the game, but you may freely clear the whole Realm and leave the Orb alone before moving on to bonus branches.

Recommendations
The first four levels of the Realm of Zot can be cleared after you've explored the rest of the Dungeon and all its branches, but before venturing into Hell. Take care to isolate and break down packs of draconians whenever possible. The most challenging opponents will be the orbs of fire; you'll want as much fire resistance as possible and resist mutation before facing them. Electricity resistance and resist corrosion are also important to protect against black and yellow draconians and storm dragons. Potions of resistance are handy for quickly filling in a resistance you're lacking.

The fifth and final level of the Realm of Zot contains a part outside of the Orb chamber which is similar to the upper levels, and the chamber itself. See the separate article for more details on how to assault the Orb chamber and its guardians.
Inscriptions

Kekekela: /* Special Inscriptions */

You can use the { command to manually inscribe items; alternatively, you can also inscribe when viewing items from the inventory (done by pressing the item's letter). This adds a note in curly braces to the item description. Besides simply allowing you to make comments about items, there are several further uses.

Automatic Inscriptions
These are created when you identify or use items. They are a quick reference to what the item does, or what it has been tried on.

Automatic Inscription Examples
If you've tried an item that had no effect and didn't ask for a target:
<pre>{tried}</pre>

If you've tried an item and found it to be cursed (usually indicates a bad item):

<pre>{was cursed}</pre>

If you've tried an item that had no effect and asked for a target:
<pre>{tried on spiffy gold ring}</pre>

If you've identified an artefact item:
<pre>{Acc+2 AC+1 +Lev}</pre>

Custom Inscriptions
When you inspect an item in your inventory, or press the { key, you can set an inscription on the item. There are certain special keywords that will perform various functions. Custom inscriptions are helpful for protecting special items, or when automatically set on very powerful items.

Example of protecting a stone for an Earth elemental caster:
<pre>!w =f !D My Stone</pre>

Then, if in 'a' and identified as +0, the stone will then appear as:
<pre>a) +0 stone {!w =f !D My Stone}</pre>

These options will prompt you if you attempt to unwield it, will not quiver it, and will prompt you before anything that can destroy it, as well as give it a 'name'.

Special Inscriptions
!*
Will prompt before any action with this item.
!a
Will prompt before attacking with this item.
!w
Will prompt before wielding or unwielding this item.
!e
Will prompt before eating.
!q
Will prompt before quaffing.
!r
Will prompt before reading.
!f
Will prompt before throwing or firing.
!W
Will prompt before wearing armour.
!T
Will prompt before taking off armour.
!P
Will prompt before putting on jewellry.
!R
Will prompt before removing jewellry.
!v
Will prompt before evoking an item.
!Q
Will prompt before quivering an item.
!p
Will prompt before sacrificing a anything in a stack containing this item.
=p
Will prompt before sacrificing this item, but allows stack to be sacrificed.
=g
Will automatically pick this item up if autopickup is on.
=k
Will be ignored in listings on the ground.
=s
If stash tracking is explicit, dropping this marks a stash to be tracked.
=f
This item will be excluded with cycling ammunition and in automatic quivering.
+f
This item is included in cycling ammunition and automatic quivering.
!D
Will prompt before performing any action that might destroy this item.

Autoinscribe
The .rc file allows items to be automatically inscribed, using the format:
<pre>autoinscribe = [string to match]:[what to inscribe]</pre>

To always pickup royal jelly:
<pre>autoinscribe = royal jell:=g</pre>

To prompt before evoking a wand of healing:
<pre>autoinscribe = wand of healing:!v</pre>

Randart Autoinscriptions
When identifying an artefact, the identify spell will notate the effects of the artefact through an inscription.

Resistances
Resistance take the form of rXXX

Boosts
Boosts take the form of XX+X and come with a random value. Its not uncommon to find XX+1 early in the dungeon, however later, you may find XX+4 or higher.

Physical accuracy modifier.

Abilities
Special abilities take the form of +XXX (granted) or -XXX (prevented) or *XXX (uncontrolled).
