LegalFox: /* Hunger cost */

version016
A rod is a magical cudgel, similar to a wand or magical staff but with some key differences. While each wand can only cast one spell and has a set number of charges, a rod contains one or more spells that are fueled by the rod's own self-replenishing MP pool. Like a staff, rods can be used as melee weapons, but their performance is only as good as a club without the stabbing bonus (though it does benefit from the Maces & Flails skill).

Any rod you've identified will be displayed as a "+X rod of descriptive_name (Y/Z)", where X is the recharge rate of the rod, Y is the current MP available for spellcasting, and Z is the maximum MP the rod can hold. Using a scroll of recharging on a rod will improve both X and Z by 1d2, up to a max of +9 and 17, respectively. Deep dwarves can use their racial ability for the same effect, although at a prohibitive cost. A rod's recharge rate also acts as its weapon enchantment, so a +9 rod acts like a +9, +9 club; even with this, they are still poor weapons after the early game.

Rods recharge themselves over time at a rate determined by the +X given in the above example, as well as by your Evocations skill. Base recharge rate is about 0.04 MP/turn, meaning that a +0 rod used by a player with 0 Evocations takes about 25 turns to regain 1 MP. Every +1 to a rod's recharge rate adds 0.01 more MP/turn, and every Evocations level adds 0.057. These increases seem small, but add up quickly. A +3 rod and 13 Evocations adds 2 MP/10 turns, while a +9 rod used by a player with 27 Evocations gains 6 MP/10 turns.

Casting a spell from a rod differs from regular spellcasting in several important ways:
*Rods must be wielded before you can evoke them. Press v or select the wielded rod in your inventory to cast a spell from the currently wielded rod.
*Spell power is based solely upon your Evocations skill; none of the factors involved in standard magic have any impact: Spell Power = 5 + 3 × Evocations.
*You spend no MP yourself. Instead, the rod spends MP equal to the spell level of the spell cast. This will regenerate over time independent of your MP regeneration.

Hunger cost
Hunger reduction works differently from spellcasting spells. Rod spells have the same base hunger cost as regular spells, but this is reduced by 10 × Evocations, instead of Intelligence × Spellcasting. Additionally, spell hunger from rods cannot be fully eliminated; there will always be a hunger cost of at least 5.

The reported hunger cost can be decoded to the following:
Reported cost !! Per-casting cost
#...... || 1-20
##..... || 21-60
###.... || 61-120
####... || 121-200
#####.. || 201-300
######. || 301-420
####### || 420+

For reference, a flesh chunk gives 1,000 nutrition, and meat ration gives 5,000.

Tips & Tricks
*Maxing out rods may require more scrolls of recharging than you have on hand, and you may wish to save some of those for useful wands. Nonetheless, it helps to at least tune useful rods up so that their max MP is an even multiple of the cost of the most frequently used spell.
*Most rods found laying around in the dungeon have mediocre or even negative recharge rates, but a rod generated by a scroll of acquirement will usually have a high recharge rate. So long as Evocations higher than all your other magic skills, you have 80% chance to get a rod you don't already own if you request a staff. Trog worshipers who select a staff from an acquirement will always receive a rod.

Comparison to Spellcasting
Rods do have advantages over regular spellcasting, but they also have several shortcomings.

Advantages
*Rod use is independent of your stats. This allows a character which has focused entirely on dexterity or strength to successfully cast some higher-level spells without having to resort to means such as wizardry or Ashenzari.
*Rod use only requires training in Evocations, which most races have a decent aptitude in (average of +1).
*Rod use is not negatively impacted by your EV penalty. Heavy armour users can use rods to gain access to some very useful spells.
*Rod spell power is not subject to stepdowns: it simply scales with your Evocations skill.
*Rods do not drain your MP, leaving it free for other things.
*Spells from rods need not be memorized, leaving your spell levels free for other things.
*Rods can be used while silenced.

Disadvantages
*Rod use is independent of your stats. Thus, high-stat races such as elves and demigods enjoy no advantage in spell power or hunger costs when using them.
*Rods have a somewhat limited selection of spells.
*Rods are ultimately capped at 86 power. This has a significant impact on higher-level spells like Iron Shot.
*Rods must be wielded to evoke spells from them. This significantly decreases tactical flexibility in using rods, and can prove a real danger if the rod should end up cursed somehow.
*The hunger cost of rod use can be significant for some races. Spriggans in particular may want to use rods sparingly.
*Rod hunger can never be entirely eliminated. While the 5 nutrition minimum is generally ignorable, the minimum costs for level 5 and 6 spells (80 and 280, respectively) from rods are not.
*Rods have a fairly small pool of mana, capped at 17, which can limit the usefulness of spells that you will want to cast repeatedly, such as Abjuration.
*Rods take up space in your inventory, whereas spells do not.
* Gain power from killing - When you kill a monster, you gain 1d(2 + HD/6)-1 MP. Note that because of the -1, you don't always gain MP after a kill.
* Identify wands - All wands are fully identified when you pick them up.
Piety level *: "Inquisitive"
Piety level ******: "Grand Gadgeteer"
:*Supercharge - Once per game, you may "supercharge" a wand or rod. Supercharging a rod sets the maximum charges to 18 and the enchantment to +10. Supercharging a wand sets the maximum charges to 4.5 times the normal amount for the wand's type, rounded down. For example, a supercharged wand of hasting gets 4.5*9 = 40 charges. The wand is also fully recharged.

Gifts
At each piety breakpoint, Pakellas gives you an evocable gift.

* At 1 star, you receive a wand of flame, slowing, confusion, polymorph, or random effects.
* At 2 stars, you receive a box of beasts, sack of spiders, or phantom mirror.
* At 3 stars, you receive a wand of paralysis, iceblast, acid, or enslavement.
* At 4 stars, you receive an elemental evocable.
* At 5 stars, you receive a rod. (Felids receive another 3- or 4-star gift.)

Pakellas also gifts potions of magic after 2 piety stars, once enough MP is collected.

Punishments
After you abandon Pakellas, your MP will not start to regenerate again until wrath has ended. Any evocables you use backfire, causing you to be hit with the effect in addition to the evocable's usual effect.

Additionally, Pakellas will periodically punish you:

* 60% of the time, Pakellas will try to drain evocables. The order in which they're tried is random.
** Drain charges from your wands. This fails if you're carrying no wands or have no wands with charges.
** Drain charges, max charges, and enchantments from your rods. This fails if you're carrying no rods or have no rods with charges.
** Drain evocables that are recharged with experience, such as lamp of fire. This fails if you're carrying no such items or all the ones you're carrying are already drained.
* If the above failed or wasn't tried in the first place, there's a 50% chance for Pakellas to drain all your MP. This fails if you already have 0 MP.
* Otherwise, Pakellas drains you.

Strategy
Pakellas supplies you with a guaranteed source of early-game evocables and a lets you make the most of other evocables you happen to find on the floor. However, the lack of MP regeneration means that you will only be casting spells occasionally, if at all.

Backgrounds that don't rely on spellcasting make the best Pakellas worshippers, since they won't miss natural MP regeneration. Evocables add several tactical options:
* Ranged attacks with various wands and rods
* Confusing or paralysing enemies with wands and then stabbing them
* Summon allies with miscellaneous evocables or a rod of shadows

Nearly any species can benefit from worshipping Pakellas. Deep dwarves in particular have a high evocations aptitude and enjoy being able to recharge their wands of healing without spending max MP. Vine Stalkers may be the worst choice, since lack of MP regeneration makes their innate guardian spirit much less useful; however, their anti-magic bite still restores MP. Spriggans may not be a good choice, because their lack of a renewable food supply means they cannot take full advantage of rods.
"Sacrifice that you may gain great power!"

Racial Restrictions
Demigods are prohibited from worshiping Ru.

Appreciates
*Making sacrifices to him. The amount of piety granted per sacrifice varies depending on the significance of the sacrifice (sacrificing a hand grants much more piety than sacrificing purity by gaining dopiness).

Deprecates
*Nothing. You can't offend Ru, Ru has no penance, and inflicts no wrath for leaving. However, you lose the benefits of worshiping Ru while retaining all the drawbacks of your sacrifices (they are not undone).

*Piety with Ru does not decrease.

Given Abilities
Piety level -: ""
:*Make Sacrifice - Ru gives you no powers initially, but as you explore will periodically offer you a batch of three sacrifice options to make. These will be available from the Abilities screen. Making a sacrifice will permanently handicap your character in a dramatic way, but will grant you piety, which unlocks new abilities and makes them more powerful. New sacrifices will be offered periodically, and will refresh faster after you accept one than if you simply let a set of three sit unused. The exact amount of piety received varies depending on how crippling the effect is on your character. See Sacrifices below for more details. Note that Monks do not get their initial starting piety with Ru as they would with other gods, but do get offered an immediate choice of sacrifices upon joining if Ru is their first god.

Once you've made sufficient sacrifices to reach full piety, Ru will stop offering new ones. If you abandon and return to the god, however, new sacrifices will be made available.

Piety level *: ""
:*Aura of Power - Any enemy that attacks you may instead falter or redirect its attack to itself or another target. The chance of this rises linearly with piety, reaching a 10% chance of faltering and 5% chance of redirecting at max piety.

Piety level **: ""
:*Your Aura of Power is strengthened. Enemies that inflict damage upon you receive various detrimental status effects. The chance of this rises linearly with piety, reaching 33% at max piety. The specific status effect applied is randomly chosen from the following list: Corona, Silence, Blind, Slow, or Paralysis. The chance of inflicting a more severe status effect rises with damage sustained and falls based on the attacker's HD.

Piety level ***: ""
:*Draw Out Power - When used, you regain HP and MP. Cost: moderate draining.

Piety level ****: ""
:*Power Leap - Allows you to leap three tiles and creates a damaging 3x3 explosion wherever you land. Explosion damage scales with piety and experience level. Cost: light draining.

Piety level *****: ""
:*Apocalypse - Deals heavy damage and random status effects to every enemy within your line of sight. Cost: heavy draining.

Piety level ******: ""
:*No new abilities. Please note that unlike other gods, Ru's piety caps at 160. That means that as soon as you reach ****** piety, you are maxed out.

Punishments
Ru cannot be offended in any way, and will never deliver punishments upon your character. However, all sacrifices made while worshiping Ru are permanent, and the abilities Ru grants are lost when upon abandonment.

Strategy
Ru encourages focused characters by rewarding the sacrifice of anything that lies outside one's planned build, granting extremely powerful abilities and buffs in return. Wearing an amulet of faith does not increase the piety gained per sacrifice, nor does Forlorn reduce it; instead, they simply hasten or slow down the rate at which new sacrifices are offered. Unlike with most other gods, removing an amulet of faith does not damage piety. One simply gains an extra delay before the next set of sacrifices is offered. As such, a max piety Ru-worshiper gains nothing from wearing an amulet of faith and loses nothing for removing it.

Ru offers sacrifices based solely on how much time has passed. You can take advantage of this and get max piety fairly quickly by waiting until your character is very hungry before exploring, then eat the next monster that leaves an edible corpse, then repeat. Because they move at nearly double the speed of other characters, Ru will offer Spriggans sacrifices much less often than other characters as they explore the dungeon normally.

Be aware that any sacrifices you take up are permanent. You will never get back that arm, or your dodging skill, or the ability to have allies. Thus, it is rarely a good idea to switch to another god from Ru.

Try to sacrifice such that it does not interfere heavily with your strategy. For example, in a 3 rune game, where you wouldn't expect a lot of torment or hellfire, Sacrifice Drink would be more doable than for a 15 rune game where both are commonplace and will frequently deny you your potions. Sacrifice Arcana would be fine for 3 rune games where you could do without some spells, but may be regrettable should you wish to go for 15 and find yourself unable to cast Haste, Controlled Blink, or Regeneration. Contrariwise, Sacrifice Essence may be dangerous and difficult to cope with in a 3 rune game, but can be easily made up for in equipment by the extended game.

That said, Ru does offer many useful powers. Though it may not feel substantial, Aura of Power will give you a decent edge in fights. Draw out Power is straightforward - instantly regain HP and MP at the cost of slight draining. Power Leap is a highly versatile tool for both positioning yourself and damaging enemies. Finally, Apocalypse will incapacitate foes everywhere while dealing considerable damage. It can wipe out most of your ordinary foes and tough ones will be significantly weakened.

All of Ru's abilities exhaust the user for a short while, as though you'd cast Death's Door or gone berserk. Choose when to use your abilities wisely.

Sacrifices
Ru will offer you a randomly selected batch of three sacrifices every so often. Choosing a sacrifice will permanently handicap your character as described, and you will not be able to make a new sacrifice until a new batch is offered. Each sacrifice can be selected only once, though you'll only have to make a fraction of them over the course of the game. Unlike other gods, Ru's piety maxes at 160 (the start of six stars) rather than 200, so as soon as you hit ******, you are have maximum piety and Ru will no longer offer sacrifices.

Sacrifice Arcana - Permanently lose three randomly selected magic skills and access to all spells in those schools. Any experience you've invested in the associated skills will be converted to additional piety, and any spells you already know that use those skills will be forgotten. One school is chosen from each of the following groups:
*Charms/Conjurations/Summonings/Translocations
*Transmutations/Necromancy/Hexes
*Air Magic/Earth Magic/Fire Magic/Ice Magic/Poison Magic.

Sacrifice Artifice - Permanently lose the Evocations skill. Any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety. Your character can no longer activate any wands, rods, or abilities which rely upon the Evocations skill. Brands, egos, and the lantern of shadows still function as normal though.

Sacrifice Courage - Suffer a slaying and spellpower malus which scales with the number and strength of opponents in your line of sight. Penalties begin when more than one tough monster or a single nasty monster is visible, and becomes more pronounced as more opponents appear.

Sacrifice Drink - Any time you are severely injured or suffer a significantly strong attack, you lose the ability to quaff potions for ??? turns. Any attack that reduces you below 30% of max HP will trigger this, as can heavy attacks regardless of your current HP; such attacks must deal damage equal to at least 4% of your max HP for a chance of triggering the ability loss, and the chance rises with higher damage, guaranteed at 20% max HP.

Sacrifice Durability - Permanently lose the Armour skill. Any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety. Worth bonus piety if you've also used Sacrifice Nimbleness.

Sacrifice Essence - Permanently suffer one of the following randomly selected negatives: a negative rank of wizardry, -40 magic resistance, or -10% MP. When you select this sacrifice, you will get to see which option has been chosen for you, and may accept or decline at that point.

Sacrifice Hand - Permanently lose one hand (or set of hands in the case of formicids) and all associated benefits of two-handedness. You can only wield weapons which are one-handed for your species, lose the ability to deliver offhand punches, can never wear shields, and lose one ring slot. You also lose access to the Shields skill, and any experience invested in it will be converted to additional piety.

Sacrifice Health - Permanently suffer one of the following randomly selected negatives: -3 , -3 EV, or -10% HP. When you select this sacrifice, you will get to see which option has been chosen for you, and may accept or decline at that point.

Sacrifice Love - Permanently make almost all monsters you encounter hostile to you. This includes derived undead which you generate and temporary monsters which you summon or create through evokable items. The only unaffected monsters are orbs of destruction, ball lightning, battlespheres, spectral weapons, and fulminant prisms. Notably, the fire vortices created by Fire Storm will be hostile. Also, the spell Enslave and all wands of enslavement will no longer function.

Sacrifice Nimbeleness - Permanently lose the Dodging skill. Any experience you've invested in it will be converted to additional piety. Worth bonus piety if you've also used Sacrifice Durability.

Sacrifice Purity - Permanently acquire one rank of one of the following bad mutations: Scream, Deterioration, Slow Healing, No Device Heal, or Reduced Attributes. The mutation is randomly selected when you choose this sacrifice, and you may decide whether or not to accept the selected mutation at that time.

Sacrifice Stealth - Permanently have your stealth value set to 0, as though you were constantly berserking. Any opponent in your line of sight will immediately notice you. This does not mean you produce additional noise, however, so you will not be waking up things beyond your line of sight any more than normal. Also, you may still train the Stealth skill for its stabbing benefits.

Sacrifice Words - Any time you are severely injured or suffer a significantly strong attack, you lose the ability to read scrolls for ???

History
