The Iron City of Dis is the iron branch of Hell, accessible from the Vestibule of Hell.

Useful Info
Dis is 7 levels deep and populated by iron-themed monsters. The most common is the iron devil, but you'll also encounter iron dragons, iron trolls, and on the last level, war gargoyles. All the while a mystical Hellish force will assault you, as is usual for all Hell branches, causing multiple nasty effects.

Dis has a layout similar to the Vaults: square open levels with several smaller rooms that may contain additional monsters.

The last level contains the iron rune of Zot, guarded by Dispater. Teleport control will not work here until you pick up the rune.

Recommendations
Dis can be one of the easier branches of Hell if played right. The open layout means it's harder to be surrounded, for one, and a lot of "iron" monsters are slow and thus easy to outrun. The demons summoned can be as dangerous as Tartarus's set, but are often weaker. At any rate, do not attempt Dis until you've cleared almost everything else in the game, aside possibly from Zot:5, the Tomb, Pandemonium, and Ziggurats.

Some means of restoring or sustaining abilities are welcome, since the effects of Hell can cause severe stat draining, and it's wise to carry some potions of healing to prevent your body from rotting away, which may happen occasionally by the effects of Hell.

Note that Dis:7 has guaranteed ice fiends, so a minimum of rC++ is recommended for that floor.

Hell effects
Trivia
In Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Dis is the City of the Dead, and is located in the Fifth Circle of Hell. Punished within Dis are those whose lives were marked by active (rather than passive) sins, such as heretics, murderers, suicides, thieves, and traitors. In Roman mythology, Dispater was a god of the underworld, later subsumed by Pluto or Hades. Originally a chthonic god of riches, fertile agricultural land, and underground mineral wealth, he was later commonly equated with the Roman deities Pluto and Orcus, becoming an underworld deity.
Xtahua the Ancient is a unique fire dragon, much more durable than normal and with upscaled physical and fire attacks. Unlike standard fire dragons, he can destroy any doors in his way, and his breath attack leaves a cloud of fire at the end of its range. Butchering Xtahua's corpse may produce an inscribed fire dragon hide, though it is no different from the hides of more mundane fire dragons.
Tips & Tricks
*Xtahua can conceivably one-shot fragile, unprepared characters, and even beefier characters can't stand up to too much of his fire breath. Pile on the fire resistance (as well as Repel/Deflect Missiles to make his breath miss you entirely) and deal your damage quickly, as he's still a menace in melee range. If at all possible, use freezing weapons or Ice Magic to take advantage of his vulnerability, but avoid fire and poison.
*Xtahua's searing breath will leave a cloud of fire at the end of its path. Try not to get backed against a wall or into a corner unless you think you can handle him while standing in the flames.

History
Prior to 0.16, Xtahua's breath attack did not leave a fire cloud, and he only opened doors instead of destroying them.

Useful Info
Octopode crushers are deadlier than their common octopode brethren, both physically and magically. Along with their proficiency with Earth Magic, they are capable of throwing anything they are currently constricting to a non-adjacent location for 1d64 damage (40% chance of this occurring each turn of constriction). They prefer to throw the player to a location near dangerous monsters or into open space. Octopode crushers can be found in watery portions of the Depths and rarely in vaults occurring in Shoals.
<!--spl-bot-end-->

Tips & Tricks
*Getting thrown can change your position dramatically, possibly exposing you to unexplored areas and alerting further monsters. Furthermore, the potential 64 throw damage can leave you in a vulnerable state. You'll always be thrown somewhere that's safe to inhabit and that is currently within your line of sight, so it's a good idea to fall back and melee a crusher from a position where most or all of the locations you can see are free of monsters and not near unexplored areas.
*If your surroundings are very dangerous, try to kill or severely wound them at range. Crushers have only modest durability, and they can only throw you while you're constricted.
*Crushers often carry shields, so they'll occasionally block your targeted, ranged attacks; if you're a caster, it's much more effective to use unavoidable area attacks (eg, Fireball, Freezing Cloud).

History
Prior to 0.15, they had only 14 HD and knew Throw Icicle instead of Iron Shot.
{{flavour|Yredelemnul the Dark is a god worshipped by those who seek powers over death and the undead. Followers, who must oppose all things holy, can raise legions of servile undead, and gain a number of other useful (if unpleasant) powers. Yredelemnul appreciates killing, but has no interest in sacrifices, preferring corpses to be put to use. Destroying artificial beings is also appreciated, as they are neither truly alive nor subject to death or undeath.

Yredelemnul gives followers the power to raise skeletons and corpses, to recall undead followers to their vicinity, and to heal by draining the life force of living creatures. With sufficient piety, Yredelemnul can be called upon to mirror a follower's injuries onto attackers. Eventually, followers will gain the power to bind a monster's soul, and make it fight for them instead. Yredelemnul will sporadically gift followers increasingly powerful undead servants.
Actions that increase your piety are:
*Killing a living creature: About 67% chance (more for creatures with lots of hit dice, less as your experience level increases) of +1 piety.
*Having an undead slave kill a living creature: About 40% chance (more for creatures with lots of hit dice, less as your experience level increases) of +1 piety.
*Killing a holy being: About 83% chance of +1 piety.
*Animate Remains: Creates a zombie slave from a corpse, or a skeletal slave from a skeleton. Becomes Animate Dead at ***... (Costs 2 MP and 100-200 Food)
Piety level **: "Fey [Species Name]"
*Pain Mirror: Any damage you suffer while this ability is active is mirrored upon your attacker. Note that the piety cost per reflected damage is quite high, so use this ability only when you absolutely need the boost. (Free to activate, but costs piety each time it takes effect equal to the square root of the damage done)
*Recall Undead Slaves: Progressively teleports your undead slaves to your current location, similar to a Recall spell. Affects your derived undead on the current floor and the undead servants gifted by Yredelemnul from any floor. Does not function in the Abyss. (Costs 2 MP and 50-100 Food)
Piety level ***: "Soul Tainter"
*Animate Dead: Replaces Animate Remains, functioning the same but affecting all corpses in view. (Costs 2 MP, and 100-200 Food)
*Gift: Undead servants: If you are eligible for a gift and your Piety is >= 75, there's a 25% chance to receive an undead servant from Yredelemnul, which stays with you until it is destroyed. The undead servant is selected among:

Each time you are to receive a minion, the game rolls 1d(min(3+(# of previous gifts)/2, 12)). The result determines which undead servant you are gifted. As such, the faster you acquire piety, the faster the quality of Yredelemnul's gifted servants will improve.

Piety level ****: "Sculptor of Flesh"
*Drain Life: You can drain life from all living (non-demonic, undead, holy or life-protected) beings in sight. You drain 1 + 1d7 + 1d(Invocation) HP from each creature, and gain half of that damage back as healing, up to a maximum of Invocations*2. (Costs 6 MP, 200-400 Food, and 2-3 Piety)
Piety level *****: "Harbinger of Death"
*Enslave Soul: This ability allows you to convert a single enemy into a permanent undead slave upon its death. First, you must use the ability on a natural holiness monster of at least normal intelligence, which must have 75% or more of its health remaining. The target must also be able to leave a zombifiable corpse. Using the ability requires an unobstructed path between the caster and the target. Once this is done, the caster will have (2 + (Invocations * 0.75) turns to kill the victim. If the victim is successfully killed in time, it becomes a permanent spectral thing of its former self, allied to you and still capable of casting its spells and equipped with all of its gear. You may only have one enslaved soul at a time; enslaving a new one will destroy the old. (Costs 8 MP, 150-300 Food, and 4-6 Piety)
Piety level ******: "Grim Reaper"
*No new abilities.

Punishments
If you leave or are excommunicated from Yredelemnul, all of your slaves leave you and become hostile, though none of them are worth any experience to kill.

While under penance, Yredelemnul will sometimes punish you (about once every 2000 turns).

Possible punishments are:
*Random necromancy miscast (100% if your experience level is <= 4, less likely as your experience level increases)
*Cast (hostile) Animate Dead
*Some of your undead slaves leave you
*Hostile undead are summoned against you from the following list: mummy, wight, flying skull, wraith, freezing wraith, phantasmal warrior, flaming corpse, flayed ghost, skeletal warrior, ghoul, death cob, bone dragon, or profane servitor.

On average, it will take 25 such punishments to burn through the 50 penance you have incurred.

Strategy
Yredelemnul is the god of choice for melee characters who want backup, as well as powerful panic buttons in terms of draining life force and mirror damage prayers. Characters capable of casting Haste work well with this god, as powerful minions can become considerably deadlier while hastened. Yredelemnul is also viable for "monstrous" species who might want access to undead slaves, but lack the magical aptitudes to easily learn Necromancy.

* Yredelemnul's ability to permanently Enslave Souls enables you to get a single extremely powerful undead version of a single living humanoid. This requires a very high Invocations skill, but it can even enslave Tiamat! Also note that when used properly, the resulting spectral horror keeps its old gear on it.

* Consider leaving powerful uniques alive if your Enslave Soul isn't reliable yet for later enslavement. Good candidates include Tiamat, Wiglaf, Norris, Frederick, Margery, Saint Roka, Rupert, Aizul and other powerful uniques. Nikola can be a dangerous ally, though, due to his usage of Chain Lightning. Good generic monsters to enslave include titans, fire giants, frost giants, high level deep elves (demonologists, master archers, blademasters), and orc warlords.

* Yredelemnul is perhaps the worst god to worship while tackling the extended end game content such as the Hells, Pandemonium, and the Tomb. In those areas, even bone dragons are outmatched, there are no corpses to raise, and enemies are immune to Drain Life. Also, there is no way to gain piety as Yredelemnul does not award piety for demon and undead deaths while it constantly decays over time. In addition, Yredelemnul prohibits the use of Holy Wrath weapons which are often the best type available for those areas. On the other hand, Yredelemnul's wrath is one of the easiest to deal with, so switching late game is an option.

History
Prior to 0.14, there was no cap on the number of bone dragons and profane servitors you could have at once. Also, you would receive freezing wraiths in place of vampires, and desecrating holy remains gave piety.

Prior to 0.13, you could be gifted rotting hulks and plague shamblers.

Prior to 0.12, recalling undead slaves did not have any delay, but it was not able to recall any undead servants from other levels.

Prior to 0.10, the undead servant gift roll's results were based on piety.

Prior to 0.6.0, Yredelemnul's random undead gifts could not follow you between floors.

Racial Restrictions
Demigods cannot worship Okawaru (or any other god).

Appreciates
*Killing powerful living, undead or demonic beings. Very low chance of Piety for weak creatures.
*Sacrificing corpses of powerful creatures by standing over them and praying. Okawaru only accepts fresh corpses - they cannot be rotting, skeletons, or chunks.

Deprecates
*You'll lose on average one Piety point every 280 turns, so kill often!
*Attacking your allies. (Penance)
**You must avoid using any ranged attacks in your allies' direction (thankfully there is a warning any time you attempt this).
**When confused and adjacent to allies, you should not attempt to attack anything or even move if you are not in immediate danger.

Given Abilities
Piety level (0): "Struggler"
* No granted abilities.

Piety level (*): "Combatant"
*Heroism - Increases all non-magic skills by 5. Evocations and Invocations count as magic. No skill is increased past 27. HP bonus from Fighting is not affected. (Costs 2 MP, 50-100 Food, and 1-2 Piety)

Piety level (**): "Warrior"
*No new abilities.

Piety level (***): "Knight"
*No new abilities.

Piety level (****): "Warmonger"
*No new abilities.

Piety level (*****): "Commander"
*Finesse - Halves the action delay of melee and ranged attacks, doubling your attack speed. Bear in mind this bonus is reduced if your action delay is already less than 0.4. (Costs 5 MP, 100-200 Food, and 4-6 Piety)

Piety level (******): "Victor of a Thousand Battles"
*No new abilities.

Gifts
;Piety 81+
*Ammunition. If you are eligible for a gift and 1d(Piety) >= 72, there's a 13% chance that you will receive ammunition on a given turn. This only happens if your best missile skill (Slings, Bows, Crossbows, or Throwing) is >= 8 and you have the launcher for your best missile skill (sling, (long)bow, crossbow, or blowgun respectively) in your inventory (having Throwing of 8 or more and no blowgun gets you throwing items instead). You may receive ammo for a different skill than this best skill (but always a skill you have). These missiles will often be branded. The gift timeout for each gift is 2d4 + 4.

;Piety 130+
*Weapons and armour. If you are eligible for a gift and 1d(Piety) >= 120, there's a 25% chance that you will receive a weapon or piece of armour. The item given will always be wearable by your species and can be of any quality level. It is similar to a scroll of acquirement, but the results are somewhat worse on average. The gift timeout for each gift is between 31 and 49 for weapons, and between 62 and 94 for armour.

Punishments
*While under penance, Okawaru will sometimes punish you (about once every 2000 turns) by sending 1d(experience level/5) hostile monsters to fight you. The monsters are picked among:
**Orc warrior (15%)
**Orc knight (15%)
**Naga warrior (10%)
**Centaur warrior (10%)
**Stone giant (10%)
**Fire giant(10%)
**Frost giant (10%)
**Cyclops (10%)
**Hill giant (5%)
**Titan (5%)

In general, if you can survive Vaults:5, you can survive Okawaru's wrath. The monsters he summons are no worse than those encountered there, although there is always the possibility he will summon them at a particularly inopportune moment.

If there is nowhere within your line of sight for these monsters to be summoned to, the message, "Okawaru's forces are busy with other wars," will appear instead.

Strategy
Okawaru is the most popular god for melee characters.

His/her simple, straightforward effectiveness has made him/her one of the most popular yet criticized gods in the Crawl pantheon. Okawaru grants only two abilities - a Heroism effect that can be invoked at * and a Finesse effect at *****. Used in conjunction, this will allow twice as many attacks with greater offense and defense. These enhancements come with no downsides except for some minor glow, so you can also use magic and abilities if you wish.

Later on come gifts of weapons, armour, shields, and ammo biased towards usefulness. Since these behave like reduced-potency scrolls of acquirement, many of them will be of little permanent use, but by the end game you will likely find yourself using at least a few pieces of god-given equipment. Okawaru is also a less restrictive means of getting this equipment than Trog (the only other god who gifts weapons).

Players going for an all-rune win can often benefit from abandoning Okawaru in favor of The Shining One before the Crypt.

History
In 0.16, Okawaru will be capable of gifting ammo as soon as you put any training into a ranged weapon skill.

Prior to 0.14, allowing your allies to die incurred piety loss and the Demonspawn Demonic Guardian mutation was suppressed.

Prior to 0.13, Okawaru didn't care about the death of elementals.

Prior to 0.8, Okawaru's granted powers were Might and Haste instead of the current Heroism and Finesse.

The amulet of clarity grants the clarity intrinsic, protecting its wearer from unintentional berserking, being mesmerised, and most forms of confusion. This protection has limits, however; it cannot stop confusion caused by a god's wrath, and equipping it while confused will not immediately cure the condition (though it will stop whatever confused you from extending your confusion).

Strategy
As most of the things this amulet protects against are also blocked by high magic resistance, other amulets are usually better. However, it is good to wear in a number of situations:

* It is highly valuable for mummies, who have absolutely no way of curing confusion. This is particularly true in Hell, where one of the the ever-present Hell effects is MR-bypassing confusion.
* It is good to wear for melee characters who have berserkitis and cannot afford to go berserk.
* In a similar vein, it makes unrands such as Bloodbane and in particular the Sword of Jihad far more usable.
* It is a good option against particularly nasty or OOD uniques capable of confusing you, such as Rupert.
* It can be good switch if you find yourself next to a moth of wrath and can't kill it quickly.

A surprise in every bottle! Potions of mutation will attempt to inflict three random mutations on you, with equal odds of them being good or bad. Heavily mutated characters or those with any form of mutation resistance will often receive fewer than three mutations, potentially receiving zero. Followers of Zin incur a piety loss and a penance if they knowingly drink this potion.

Note that undead characters cannot mutate and will rot instead, reducing maximum health and possibly taking a temporary hit to stats as well.

Tips & Tricks
*Most players generally avoid drinking potions of mutation. Although it's possible to acquire useful resistances and abilities this way, these benefits will likely get wiped out when you need to cure bad mutations later on, and some possible results can doom a promising young character. That being said, it's advisable that you either quaff them early on, before you're really attached to your character and don't mind it dying horribly, or that you wait until you've also found a potion of cure mutation (though wasting these is never a good idea).
*Jiyva followers can quaff these with significantly less fear of permanent disability.
*Heavily malmutated characters who have no potions of cure mutation and aren't willing to switch to Zin or Jiyva might consider drinking all the potions of mutation they can find. When you have many mutations, random mutations, such as from potions, have a good chance of removing mutations instead of adding to them. Only do this if you're character has some crippling mutation set (e.g. teleportitis or unnerfable slowness before Zot:5), since it can sometimes leave you worse off, even if on average it will leave you better off.
