The amulet of the Air has a poor base type, but its benefits outweigh the Inaccuracy ego. Permanent repel missiles and +5 evasion are hard to beat while electricity resistance and on-demand flight are very useful from time to time. Any character that has seriously developed its weapon skills throughout the game will barely notice the accuracy drop, making this an excellent amulet to swap in on occasion or even wear regularly.

History
Prior to 0.12, this artefact's base type was an amulet of controlled flight. When this intrinsic was removed in 0.12, the base type was changed to an amulet of inaccuracy and it received the permanent Repel Missiles effect to make up for that penalty.
The glaive of Prune is a straightforward enough artefact: a +12 glaive of chopping. The "prune curse" on this weapon has no actual in-game effect, other than making Zin hate it. Most characters who happen to use two-handed polearms will find the glaive of Prune to be perfectly sufficient for winning the game. ==Desirability==
Devastator is basically a well-enchanted club with upgraded base stats and unavoidable splash damage to everything adjacent to your target when used in melee.

Despite everything constantly blowing up in your face, it actually does very little backlash damage even if you have 0 . It's especially useful for quickly clearing out swarms of fragile enemies like bats or killer bees, but it deals with single enemies in the early- and mid-game just fine. Devastator's explosions are very loud, though, so expect to deal with swarms of enemies considerably more often.

Devastator's explosion damage will not affect monsters that are insubstantial, invisible to you, or submerged.
The game does two rolls with an Evocations/27 chance to succeed each time you successfully hit an opponent; if either test succeeds, the effect triggers.<br>

Desirability
The Elemental Staff offers an unbelievable array of defensive bonuses, giving the wielder significantly more freedom when it comes to armour and jewellery slots. With a modest skill investment in Staves (12 for min speed) and significant training in Evocations, it also serves as a fairly powerful, moderately fast one-handed melee weapon, though not having control over the element you evoke is unfortunate.

For casters, coupling this with a Robe of the Archmagi and possibly other spellpower enhancers can leave you with a well-rounded defense and an overwhelming offense. For melee characters, particularly ones who can fill their suddenly-available equipment slots with slaying bonuses, it's an excellent way to gain exceptional amounts of durability while still being a force to reckon with. Don't expect it to be of much use in melee with monsters resistant to all elemental damage, however.

History
Prior to 0.14, the elemental staff was a +3, +1 quarterstaff making it a marginally better source of physical damage. However, it lacked any elemental brand effects, offered no rElec, made noise while wielded, and significantly increased your hunger. It also provided only +60 MR.
The ability of Kryia's mail coat to double healing from potions is of great use in the early to mid-game, but its utility is far less in the late game or extended. Casters will usually wear something lighter to minimize penalties to spellcasting, and fighters will typically find heavier armour that provides better defenses. Even hybrids will often find armour that simply has better innate resistances. However, for a character lacking in cold resistance or relying heavily on healing as a crutch, Kryia's mail coat is very useful.
(However, Ashenzari worshippers should note that this sword cannot be cursed because it's holy.)

If you happen to have much skill in Summonings or have any other sources of generating allies (the Shining One's angelic reinforcements, for instance), you may find this weapon even more desirable, as going berserk will berserk your allies as well. This will vastly increase their combat performance, and they'll likely stay berserk long after you've returned to normal.
The Vampire's Tooth is the most highly enchanted quick blade possible, making it fairly effective for fighting even enemies that aren't susceptible to its vampiric effects; of course, it truly shines when used in areas full of natural creatures that it can suck HP from. Like all Short Blades, it can fall short when used against enemies with particularly high even with its prodigious enchantment, though a potion of might and/or a source of slaying can help it punch through even the toughest armour.

Stabbing specialists in particular can make excellent use of this weapon, as not only will it deal grievous damage to stab-able enemies, but it will also heal you for the full stab damage whenever the vampirism triggers. This can work particularly well if you have a means of setting up a stab mid-fight (throwing nets, a wand of paralysis, Hexes, Invisibility, etc.), allowing you to quickly heal up from any beatings you've taken thus far.

The Vampire's Tooth can be found in a vault guarded by depth-dependent vampiric monsters (ranging from vampire bats to tyrant leeches to vampires and vampire knights). This vault can appear early in the Dungeon, potentially giving players access to a quick blade well before they would normally begin to appear.
Extends berserk on 50% of kills for (1 + 1d4) / 2 turns

Desirability
The necklace of Bloodlust is definitely not the sort of item you'd want to use regularly, but it can still be situationally useful. Although +6 slaying and +80 magic resistance on an amulet are both excellent properties, the berserkitis makes it a risky piece of gear for any character who isn't undead or doesn't have clarity to wear for any extended period of time. However, it may be useful for characters who find themselves facing a particularly nasty lone melee threat: the slaying bonus will be quite helpful, and moreover, berserking would likely be useful in this situation instead of harmful. However, at a 5% chance per attack, it is not a good idea to rely on the berserkitis from this item to start a rage; fortunately, the amulet can also be evoked like a mundane amulet of rage. Be sure to have a scroll of remove curse handy in case it recurses itself.

Tips & Tricks
*The berserk effect won't trigger with ranged attacks. This makes the necklace an interesting proposition for characters primarily relying on ranged combat, giving them easy access to berserking while always providing a bonus to slaying and magic resistance.

History
*In 0.20 the slaying was increased from +3 to +6 and the magic resistance increased from +40 to +80 (MR+ to MR++).
*In 0.19 the +2 strength buff was removed and the -2 intelligence became -3.
*In 0.18 the forced berserk chances were decreased from 9% to 5%.
*In 0.15 the stealth penalty of -20 was removed.
*In 0.14 the amount of MR given was increased from 30 to 40.
*In 0.12 the odds of the amulet causing berserk were changed.

Desirability

History
Prior to version 0.22, the Vampire's Tooth was a +4 dagger.
The trident of the Octopus King is an excellent weapon if you find it early on, as it carries a decent brand, three useful resistances, and solid enchantments. Unfortunately, its damage output is a little low for the late game, and its brand is useless against demons and undead. Even so, it's a decent swap item if you suddenly find yourself suddenly in dire need of electricity or magic resistance.

The glaive of Prune is a straightforward enough artefact: a +12 glaive of chopping. The "prune curse" on this weapon has no actual in-game effect, other than making Zin hate it. The orange crystal plate armour offers impressive physical defense, a hard-to-come-by special defense, and a better boost to spellpower than a robe of the Archmagi. Any character who relies heavily on magic will want to wear this, but unfortunately few will actually be able to. The two species best able to handle ultra-heavy armour (ogres and trolls) are too large to fit, and for a medium-sized character to wear it comfortably would require investing in strength, not intelligence, greatly reducing their spellcasting potential.

In the end, it's an interesting and very effective piece of equipment for heavily-armoured thugs, but only a few fortunate hybrid characters with very high stats (demigods or followers of Cheibriados, perhaps) will be able to take full advantage of what it offers.

Using the obsidian axe can be more than a little irritating, but its excellent stats may make up for it. If you are wielding this broad axe and a monster is visible, you will be mesmerized and restricted from moving any farther away from the monster: "Visions of slaying the [monster] flood into your mind." If there are multiple monsters, you will fixate on the closest one. When mesmerized by the axe, you lose any current confusion and gain temporary clarity (suggesting a possible emergency use, if you lack potions of curing). Unwielding the axe (only by reading a scroll of remove curse; Tukima's Dance won't work) dispels all forms of mesmerization, even if sirens or merfolk avatars are involved.

The mesmerization property of this weapon can potentially be very dangerous, for instance if it forces you to run headlong into a group of strong melee monsters instead of retreating into a corridor to fight them. For this reason, if you are going to use this weapon, you should always keep some escape option open and ready to use: a scroll of teleportation or remove curse is highly advisable. Be aware that in the more dangerous areas of the dungeon, this may cause you rapidly burn through such items. Many players may simply choose to go for a good two-handed axe anyway, which will provide superior damage output with none of the downsides of this weapon.

Summoning also works with plants hits. A maximum of 3 demons may be present at the same time.
Luckily, this hat is most beneficial to those who are likely to have the means to speed themselves up, i.e. casters with Swiftness or Controlled Blink. It may also be useful to followers of Cheibriados, who are already slow, or inherently fast characters like spriggans or centaurs, who only sacrifice part of their speed advantage.

Although it's unlikely to make a major difference, each ring of the Octopus King you wear while wielding this trident increases its enchantment by +2, up to a theoretical (but extraordinarily unlikely) maximum of +24.
This weapon always heals its wielder for the full damage it does when the vampiric effect is triggered against a susceptible target.

Desirability

Can also reflect piercing attacks and enchantments

Desirability
The warlock's mirror is a fairly useful shield. As a buckler, almost all characters can make use of it (only ogres, trolls, and felids are incapable of wearing it) and it requires relatively little Shields skill to negate its penalty. In addition to blocking and potentially reflecting mundane physical attacks, the warlock's mirror can also reflect piercing effects (such as bolt spells or breath weapons) and enchantments (such as Hexes).

The ability to reflect harmful Hexes or bolts can be a truly useful one, especially in areas where such things are common. Even if an enemy happens to be immune to a reflected spell (such as an ancient lich's Confuse or an orb of fire's Bolt of Fire), you still avoided a potentially dangerous effect and, in the case of reflected bolts, the enemy standing behind the caster might not be so fortunate. However, the warlock's mirror is only a buckler, so a more skilled shield-user may prefer to use a larger shield and/or one with a useful resistance for greater protection (especially since a more mundane reflection ego is still quite good and easily obtained with an amulet of reflection)

The chance to reflect a magical effect increases with your SH score, starting at around 24% at 6 SH (the amount most characters will have with 0 Shields skill) and gradually increasing to 50% at 20 SH. Higher chances of reflecting effects are possible as SH increases further, but attaining such high SH scores with a mere buckler grows more and more difficult.

Chance to reflect magical effects = 2*SH / (2*SH + 40)

You can increase your SH by:
*increasing your Dexterity or Shields skill
*wearing an amulet of reflection (the mirror already has a reflection ego, but the extra SH from the amulet still applies)
*having the Large bone plates mutation
*worshiping Qazlal
*using The Shining One's Divine Shield ability

Antimagic brand<br>
Forces berserk on 50% of attacks

Desirability
There's really not much reason to use the Wrath of Trog as your primary weapon. Berserkers can just wait for Trog to gift them a decent antimagic weapon that doesn't come with berserkitis, and other melee specialists may wish to use a weapon with a more universally useful brand and not have to worry about going berserk every fight, whether it's a good idea or not. It's possible to nerf the berserkitis with an source of clarity or by worshipping Ashenzari (or by being undead, but none of the undead races are particularly good with axes), but that restricts an equipment slot or god choice in exchange for a weapon that's honestly not that great.

The berserkitis' activation rate is high enough that it's actually the weapon's best selling point at the same time, at least in the role of secondary weapon. If you have the skill to use it at mindelay, a berserk character wielding it can very quickly take down powerful foes, and the antimagic brand will negate any casting threat your target might have posed. If you're intent on conserving consumables, the Wrath of Trog can function as a makeshift combat buff on demand. Just avoid using it in situations where berserking would be a terrible idea.

Trivia
This is one of the oldest artefacts in the game, which perhaps explains its continued existence. In fact, it predates Trog himself, existing before gods were implemented, and it is very likely the inspiration for the god. Of the five original artefacts (Wrath of Trog, Scythe of Curses, Glaive of Prune, Singing Sword, and Mace of Variability), this one has probably changed the least.

True to the weapon's description, Trog will never gift it, since he can't seem to find it.

Enchantment level rises when you kill dragons

Enchantment Mechanics
If a dragon slaying-vulnerable target is killed by the base damage of this weapon, it will gain +1 enchantment up to the HD of the dragon killed.

Examples:
*If you kill a fire dragon (HD 12) with the basic +8 Wyrmbane, it will become +9
*If you then use Wyrmbane to kill a swamp dragon (HD 9), Wyrmbane's enchantment will not change (the dragon was too weak to boost the enchantment).

The maximum enchantment Wyrmbane can gain this way is +18, though there are draconic monsters with higher HD. Even if you manage to kill something like the Serpent of Hell (HD 20) or Tiamat (HD 22) with Wyrmbane, its enchantment won't increase past +18.

The following creatures can raise the enchantment of Wyrmbane when slain, assuming its enchantment is less than their HD. Any dragon slaying-vulnerable creature not listed here (steam dragon, rime drake, etc.) is too weak to affect even the base enchantment of Wyrmbane.
Desirability
Extremely high. In almost all cases, a fully empowered Wyrmbane is the most powerful weapon in the game, given that it provides a high amount of irresistible damage coupled with excellent speed (5 min delay), the ability to wield a shield (even spriggans can use it with a buckler), and four useful intrinsics which help your survivability immensely. Be aware that the dragon slaying brand has little to do with its excellent performance; "Wyrmbane" works just fine against any opponent you may encounter in Crawl, particularly with haste, might, other slaying bonuses, or while berserk. Characters who are lucky enough to find this weapon should definitely consider switching to polearms; for a weapon as good as "Wyrmbane", 12 ranks of Polearms (all that is required to reach minimum delay) is very reasonable, even for those with abysmal aptitude for it.

Its base enchantment level of +8 does not keep it from being an extremely effective weapon, but in order to make the best use of Wyrmbane, one must first kill many dragons with it. Fortunately, this is an easier task than it might seem. Getting Wyrmbane up to +12 can be accomplished by hunting fire and ice dragons, which can be found throughout the Depths easily enough. Storm dragons, shadow dragons, and quicksilver dragons will take you further but are less commonly encountered, though you'll probably see at least a couple of them in the Vaults (they're especially likely to appear on Vaults:5).

Golden and bone dragons are probably the easiest dragons to find that will get you all the way up to +18. You can either dip into The Realm of Zot to hunt golden dragons (the draconians can also help you get a bit closer to maxed out), or into The Crypt, where bone dragons and skeletal or zombified dragons of very high HD tend to roam. You can also find high-HD undead dragons in the Abyss, if you can handle a trip through it (and you may as well look for the Abyssal Rune while you're there). The iron dragons of Dis and Serpent of Hell are also viable targets, and you'll find more undead dragons in the various Hell branches, but exploring there is significantly more dangerous than the other options. The same applies to Pandemonium, which is generally the only place you'll ever see pearl dragons outside of rare vaults.

History
*Prior to 0.19, Wyrmbane provided +Rage instead of rC+ and had a +5 bonus.
*Prior to 0.15, Wyrmbane had a +9,+6 enchantment bonus, either of which could increase when slaying dragons.
Vorpal brand

Desirability
A single swing from the dark maul will crush through virtually any monster's armouring for heavy damage, but even at 27 Maces and Flails skill, it will still take you 16 or 17 auts to attack—which is two and a half times the delay of the slowest normal weapons. Is this trade off actually worth it? At low M&F skill levels, probably not. Each of your successful attacks will likely eradicate whatever you struck, but will also effectively leave you paralyzed for two turns, and even with the +10 enchantment bonus, you might still miss often enough to leave yourself in dangerous situations. At higher M&F skill levels, this issue becomes less pronounced. Better accuracy and reduced attack delay means you'll be leaving fewer enemies alive long enough to swing at you, and those that do will have less time to capitalize on it.

This weapon is gruesomely effective in most situations, but truly shines against enemies with significant scores. A character with a quick blade may be able to deliver ten attacks in the time it takes an untrained character to swing the dark maul once, but if your opponent has powerful defenses, the maul will make the bigger impact. As such, it helps to know when to use the maul and when to put it away for something less overkill-prone. Try to avoid using the dark maul when facing multiple opponents at once, and if your character has found several good sources of slaying this game, you may want to ignore it entirely; slaying's value is very dependent on your attack speed. Finally, if at all possible, keep yourself hasted (or under the effect of Finesse for you Okawaru worshipers) when you find yourself facing serious opponents.

Despite its immense weight and delay, formicids can actually wield this weapon with one hand, since it is technically a modified great mace. Whether or not it is desirable for them to do so, what with their limited escape options, is a different question.

History
Prior to 0.16, the dark maul had only 44 base damage and a meager +6 enchantment level.
Unrand weapon types
I noticed you've been changing the listed weapon types of certain unrands (Autumn Katana, dark maul, etc.) while adding links to their source code (which is very helpful, by the way -- keep up the good work!). While I understand your reasoning behind the changes (the dark maul's code does indeed list it as OBJ_WEAPONS/WPN_GREAT_MACE), I feel that labeling it a great mace is incomplete and slightly misleading.

Special-cased unrands use regular weapon types as a baseline, but alter their stats to create what is essentially a new type of weapon -- in some cases, the only thing that remains the same is whether it's one-handed or two-handed. Additionally, their in-game descriptions list them as being a separate type of weapon entirely rather than a modified version of an existing one (the dark maul, as a continuing example, is listed as a maul in-game rather than a great mace, and does not show up in the results if you search for great maces).

I would instead list these weapons as the types in their in-game descriptions, possibly with a note regarding their original base weapon. For example:

the +10 dark maul<br>
+10 maul (modified great mace; 52 base damage, -2 base accuracy, 30 base delay, two-handed)

What's your opinion on this subject? --spudwalt (talk) 20:54, 24 May 2019 (CEST)

: I'd been changing them to convey that they inherit certain properties (sp. wieldability) from their base type, and hadn't realized they were listed differently in-game! I love your suggestion, as it conveys perfectly all the information. I'll go back through and update the ones I changed. Thank you so much for the help! -- Sirtheta (talk) 21:33, 5 June 2019 (CEST)

+10 great mace (52 base damage, -2 base accuracy, 30 base delay)<br>
Vorpal brand<br>

The dark maul was added in 0.14.

Armour encompasses all clothing worn to protect against physical melee and ranged attacks (though some provide benefits against certain magic attacks as well). Armour does this by providing increased , GDR, SH (for shields), resistances (for certain body armours), and whatever benefits their egos provide. However, this comes at a cost to your EV and Spellcasting ability when using the heavier armours. Increasing your Armour skill improves the benefits and lowers the penalties of most armour. Shields are governed by the Shields skill.

Armour Locations
There are six armour locations in Crawl, also known as armour slots when referring to whether a player is wearing (or can wear) a given type of armour. Some species have restrictions on the kinds of armour they can wear.

*Body armour is worn on a character's torso, and provides both AC and GDR. Its AC bonus is penalized by the Deformed mutation. Heavier ones provide larger EV penalties.
*Gloves are worn on the hands, and are unusable with rank 3 of the Claws mutation. Certain Transmutations, such as Blade Hands, will disable them.
*Boots are worn on the feet, and are unusable with rank 3 of either the Talons or Hooves mutations.
**In place of boots, centaur and naga characters may wear bardings on the rear portions of their bodies, providing more AC and higher potential enchantment than regular boots at the cost of a bit of EV. Centaurs cannot wear naga barding, and nagas cannot wear centaur barding.
*Headgear is worn on the head. The Beak, Antennae, and Horns mutations all restrict the player's headgear options.
*Cloaks and scarves are worn around the shoulders.
*Shields are worn on a character's arm. They provide SH, but may impede spellcasting, EV, and the use of certain weapons.

Encumbrance rating
Most body armour has an encumbrance rating proportional to its AC and GDR. Robes, animal skins, and leather armour, being lightweight, have no or a very small EV penalty; at the other end of the spectrum you can find plate armour and crystal plate armour, which are cumbersome but incredibly protective. All shields and bardings also have an EV penalty.

A higher encumbrance rating:
*Lowers your evasion chance
*Makes you less stealthy
*Reduces your accuracy
*Reduces your spellcasting success rate
*Slows unarmed combat attacks

Increasing your Armour skill decreases the effect of the encumbrance rating (though never completely: -2.2% per level, so at level 27 the reduction is -60%) and boosts the total AC granted by those pieces. High strength will also help. See the encumbrance rating page for more details..

AC Calculations
If you're interested in the formulas the game uses to determine the actual AC contributions from a piece of armour, see the AC calculations page. Otherwise, here's the short version:
*A piece of armour's base AC is always the minimum you'll receive (assuming it's not negatively enchanted and/or you aren't Deformed).
*Improving your Armour skill increases the base AC an armour provides by about 4% per level.
*Enchanting armour directly adds to your total AC. This AC bonus is not affected by the Armour skill.
*The maximum enchantment possible on a piece of armour is its base AC (for body armour and barding); between 3 and 8 for shields, depending on the type; and 2 for everything else.

Guaranteed damage reduction
Any piece of armour with a base AC greater than 2 provides you with guaranteed damage reduction. This is a percentage of damage received from all physical melee attacks that you are guaranteed to ignore. The higher the armour's base AC, the higher the percentage ignored (though it is limited by your total AC). See the article on GDR for more details.

Wear and remove times
All types of armour, including shields, require 5 turns to remove or equip. Note that if you are swapping one piece of armour for another, it will take 5 turns to remove the old armour and another 5 turns to equip the new one.

History
Scarves were added in 0.20.

In 0.19, dragon armours were renamed in dragon scales, and all dragon and troll hides were removed. Instead, creatures that could have dropped hides dropped the corresponding armour instead.

Prior to 0.16, light armour had no small spellcast success penalty; scale mail had an ER of 11 instead of 10.

In 0.15, item weight was removed from the game and removing/equipping armour was set to a flat 5 turns. Prior to that, doing so wasted AC+1 turns.

In 0.14, all racial armour types were removed. Gold dragon armour, crystal plate armour, and plate armour have had their encumbrance ratings reduced (27 -> 25, 24 -> 23, and 19 -> 18 respectively). Mottled dragon armour increased ER fom 4 to 5.

In 0.13, the evasion penalty system was changed, and the base evasion penalty was renamed as the encumbrance rating and rescaled for all armours . Splint mails were removed and chain mails were increased to 8 AC.

Prior to 0.11, you could only train Armour while wearing equipment with an EV penalty of at least -1.

Prior to 0.6, body armour was divided into Light Armour and Heavy Armour. The former would allow you to train dodging, while the latter trained Armour.

version023

Melee weapons refer to any weapons which are only capable of attacking opponents adjacent to you (with the exception of polearms; see below). While they lack the obvious range advantage of ranged weapons, they do not require ammunition, and they tend to be more powerful overall. Melee weapons are divided into several categories, each of which has its own associated skill and its own particular advantages.

Weapon attributes
The following is a table of all melee weapons in Crawl. Below is a short explanation of each field:

style="text-align: left;" | Name
The name of the item as it appears in Crawl.
style="text-align: left;" | Damage
The base amount of damage the weapon does, before various bonuses and adjustments.
style="text-align: left;" | Hit
To hit modifier for the weapon, before any other adjustments.
style="text-align: left;" | Speed
This is actually the attack delay, which is multiplied by 10 to get the "percentages" you see in-game. (That is, attack delay 10 shows as 100%.) Every 2 levels of weapon skill lowers the delay by 1 unit. A weapon's minimum delay is half of its base delay (rounded down) or 7 (5 for rapiers; 10 for hand crossbows, arbalests, and triple crossbows), whichever is lower. Speed brand and haste reduce the delay by one third (round randomly up or down). These effects stack, after the base cap, but there's an absolute cap of 2 for attack delay.
style="text-align: left;" | One-handed min. size
Minimum size required to be able to use the weapon with one hand. The order is little, small, medium, large, big.
style="text-align: left;" | Two-handed min. size
Minimum size required to be able to use the weapon with two hands. When the player's size is equal or greater than 'Two-handed min. size', but less than 'One-handed min. size', the weapon cannot be used with a shield.
A larger number indicates higher probability of acquiring through scrolls of acquirement.

Short Blades
Attacks with short blades tend to deal less damage than larger weapons do, but are significantly faster. They also deal very high damage when used to make stab attacks.
Long Blades
Long blades can riposte on successfully evading a blow. They deal moderate damage when used to make stab attacks and cross train with short blades. Their skill cost is lower than that of polearms and axes, but higher than maces and staves.
Axes
Axes are unique among weapons in that they can perform cleaving attacks, striking multiple foes in a single strike.
Maces & flails have no particular unique traits, but have significantly lower skill costs. Married to the fact that the most powerful weapons are pretty common in the dungeon, they're a popular choice both for one handed and two handed combat. Ogres and trolls have access to giant clubs and giant spiked clubs, the two most powerful weapon types in the game. However, these are generally not recommended for either race.
Staves
The Staves skill is used both to fight with physical combat staves (quarterstaves and lajatangs) and magical staves. Physical combat staves are powerful two-handed weapons that require surprisingly little skill to use effectively, but unlike other weapon classes, there is no ultra-powerful, high-skill option available.

Note that magical staves fight like +0 staves, though some offer extra damage or other effects.

Magical Staves
Magical staves are magical devices which are wielded like one-handed weapons. While a spellcaster wields one, it grants a variety of useful benefits, such as enhancing the spellpower of certain schools of magic or negating the hunger costs associated with powerful spells. Although normally very weak when used as melee weapons (they use the staff as a template for their stats), some magical staves inflict additional elemental effects when used by a skilled practitioner. See the magical staff page for more details.

Retired Weapons
Over the years, several weapons have been removed from the Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup arsenal, either due to redundancy with existing weapons or simply due to flavor issues.
*Knife
*Sabre
*Cutlass
*Katana
*Bastard sword
*Claymore
*Ankus
*Spiked flail
*Staff
*Hammer
*The blessed versions of several long blades.
*Rods

History
*Prior to 0.19 or perhaps 0.15, dire flails and great maces were one-handed weapons for trolls and ogres.

*Prior to 0.18, each weapon had a strength weight percentage that determined how the weapon would benefit from your strength and dexterity.

version023
The holy wrath brand causes a weapon to deal up to an additional 150% damage (minimum 1, averaging 75%) to demons and the undead, and renders it immune to curses. It can be found on any melee weapon, and radiates with a divine glow when wielded, identifying it.

You cannot wield weapons with this brand if you are a mummy, ghoul, vampire, demonspawn, or lichform character. Worshipers of Yredelemnul should also avoid using it, as doing so will offend Yred.

The holy wrath brand is the Shining One's special brand. At 160+ piety, you can have the brand added to any weapon of your choosing (including all ranged weapons except for blowguns).

Note that this brand does not deal additional damage to non-demonic, non-undead evil creatures, even if they have holy vulnerability.

Tips & Tricks
*Holy wrath works best on high-damage weapons due to its percentage-based damage output.
*While weak in most early-game branches (the Lair, the Slime Pits), it excels in the late-game, when most branches are filled with powerful demons and undead. The Crypt, the Tomb, Pandemonium and the Hells are especially good places to have a weapon of holy wrath.
*Followers of Ashenzari may wish to avoid this brand, as they will not be able to curse their weapon and gain the benefits from doing so.

Disruption is a special brand found only on the artefact great mace, Undeadhunter. Each time it strikes an undead target and deals damage <code>dam</code>, there is a 2/3 probability for the target to be blasted with disruptive energy up to an additional 3× damage (4× damage in total). On average, you deal 1.67× damage to undead targets.

Damage Calculation
Additional damage is calculated according to the formula:
Disruption is a special brand found only on the artefact great mace, Undeadhunter. Each time it strikes an undead target and deals damage <code>dam</code>, there is a 2/3 probability for the target to be blasted with disruptive energy up to an additional 3× damage (4× damage in total). Undeadhunter is a solidly enchanted weapon that deals superlative damage to undead opponents. While disruption is less versatile than holy wrath (as it has no impact against demons), it can be used by demonspawn, vampires, mummies, and ghouls, and its damage output against undead opponents is far superior to a weapon of holy wrath. If you find it and are already using two-handed maces, it's a good switch for places such as the Tomb or the Crypt, or when facing down bone dragons or liches. A mundane weapon with a more universally powerful brand is likely to be better for general use, though.

History
Prior to 0.15, Undeadhunter had a +7, +7 enchantment level.

Prior to 0.14, Undeadhunter may have been considered an evil weapon with the good gods forbidding the use of it.
Prior to 0.9, Undeadhunter bore a holy wrath brand and was unwieldable by evil characters as a result.
Snakebite is a rather useful weapon for much of the game, providing somewhat powerful, fast attacks with a unique brand and a useful resistance. In addition to its regular poison effect, it has a chance to inflict curare on 40% of hits, slowing and asphyxiating affected enemies. However, its base damage is fairly low, making it a poor choice for handling high- enemies, and its brand proves useless against anything with poison resistance including the many demonic and undead opponents you'll find in the end-game.

A rare vault in the early Lair is guaranteed to contain Snakebite; it consists of a long, winding corridor filled with adders, water moccasins, and black mambas, with Snakebite sitting at the very end.

History
In the hands of a skilled Short Blades specialist, the captain's cutlass is as good as any quick blade, if not better. It can deal excellent amounts of damage quickly, both in open combat and when stabbing. Like all short blades, it benefits greatly from any slaying bonuses you can give it, especially when dealing with high- targets in the late game. If you manage to disarm a foe you even get bonus damage. All in all it's a very respectable weapon.

Prior to 0.15, the captain's cutlass had an enchantment bonus of +5, +10

Prior to 0.10 this weapon carried a slaying bonus as a property (its base type was a sabre); in later versions this was incorporated into its base damage, and in 0.14, into its enchantment.

The plutonium sword combines extremely brutal damage output with occasional transmutations miscast effects. These miscast effects can be totally harmless, do extra irresistible damage, inflict weakness or malmutation, or even polymorph the monster. This can occasionally turn popcorn into something dangerous. If you need to unwield it, you can quaff potions of cancellation to safely reduce your magical contamination.

History
In 0.20, the enchantment was reduced to +11.

In 0.15, the enchantment was changed from +12, +16 to +14. Stealth penalty was increased to -50 from -20.

In versions 0.14 and 0.15, it was a claymore instead of a triple sword.

Prior to 0.12, this sword would curse itself when wielded and contaminated you lightly every turn you held it. Combined with the fact that it did not inflict Transmutation miscast effects, this made it extremely hazardous and much less desirable to use.

History
"Undeadhunter" used to be considered an evil weapon, and the good gods forbade the use of it. This aspect of the disruption brand was removed in version ??.

"Undeadhunter" was given a disruption brand in 0.9. Prior to that, it simply bore a holy wrath brand, and was unwieldable by evil characters as usual.
Desirability

History
*Prior to 0.19, Snakebite merely poisoned opponents instead of inflicting curare.
*Prior to 0.15, Snakebite had an enchantment of +5.
*Prior to 0.14, Snakebite had an enchantment of +5, +10, but could only inflict mundane poison.

History
Prior to 0.20, the captain's cutlass would behead hydras.

Prior to 0.18, the captain's cutlass didn't cause bonus damage when disarming.

In 0.16, the captain's cutlass got its enchantment bonus reduced to +5, but it gained a chance of disarming your opponent each attack.

Prior to 0.15, the captain's cutlass had an enchantment bonus of +5, +10

Prior to 0.10 this weapon carried a slaying bonus as a property (its base type was a sabre); in later versions this was incorporated into its base damage, and in 0.14, into its enchantment.
