Hiho, Aargxl here! Did you ever try to grow an octopode transmuter? I was thinking of this maybe being a good idea for mid- and lategame, because with a nice dragon form or else the eight rings could be really nice (especially if one manages to get several rings of slaying), since they don't melt into the body.
Although, I never managed to get far enough, because the start is really hard like this. Starting with offensive magic seems helpful, maybe changing to transmutations later is better.
Did you make experiences in that direction?

The most prominent features of the dungeon, walls block movement and often LOS. In general, destroying or bypassing them requires one of several wands or spells, sometimes fairly powerful.

Wall Varieties
Rock
This wall consists of simple rock.
Very common walls made from unworked stone that block LOS, but are relatively easily removed. Electrical attacks will bounce right off them. Rock is the only material for which the Passwall spell operates, allowing you to slip through it. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Boring beetles
*Eyes of devastation
*Dissolution

Translucent Rock
Identical to rock walls, but they don't block LOS. Bear in mind that you can't blink through them, even if you can see what's inside. Smite-targeted attacks are blocked.

Stone
More durable than rock walls, these require stronger magic to remove. As with rock walls, electrical attacks will bounce off these. Destroyed by:
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Corruption

Translucent Stone
The stone analog to transparent rock.

Metal
The most resilient normal walls of all. Destroyed by:
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at very high spell power)
*Shatter (at very high spell power)
*Corruption

Crystal
Immune to most wall-removal methods, these reflect fire and cold the way stone walls reflect lightning. Destroyed by:
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction

Trees
Functionally walls, these block movement, and can block LOS if you try to look beyond two adjacent ones. Destroyed by:
*Bolt of Fire
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Corruption

Mangroves
These function identically to trees, except that they block LOS. Destroyed by:
*Bolt of Fire
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Corruption

Slime Covered Rock
Found only in the Slime Pits, these will corrode any adventurer who touches them. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Disintegration
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Dissolution

Rune Carved Stone
These walls make up the central chamber of the bottom of the Slime Pits, where the Slimy Rune of Zot is found. If the royal jelly is dead (or if you have high piety with Jiyva), these walls will turn into translucent rock, allowing easy access to the rune. Without these methods, these walls can only be destroyed with:
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Corruption

Unnaturally Hard Wall
You cannot affect this wall by any means.
Walls which are described as unnaturally hard are completely indestructible. The only way past them is to go around.

Translucent Unnaturally Hard Wall
The indestructible variant of translucent rock.

Open Sea
While not walls in the traditional sense, these impassable tiles mark the outer borders of the Shoals and certain Sewers layouts.

Endless Lava
The fiery equivalent of the open sea tiles, these mark the outer borders of a floor across lava pools.

Endless Salt
Much like open sea and endless lava, these mark the outer borders of the Desolation of Salt.

Iron Grate
These block movement, spells, and ranged attacks, but not LOS or smite-targeted attacks. They are usually found in special vaults, sealing away monsters with smite-targeted attacks, though they may also be generated as the result of stepping on a pressure plate. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Large Window
Large windows are found in the certain Sewers maps, and function identically to transparent rock walls.

History
Prior to 0.11, you could find walls of solid wax:

Wax walls are frequently found in killer bee vaults, though they can also appear near altars to Xom or in the Abyss. They often hide treasure, in particular royal jelly and honeycombs. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Boring beetles
*Bolt of Fire
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Mangroves
These function identically to trees, except that they block LOS. Destroyed by:
*Bolt of Fire
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Corruption

Slime Covered Rock
Found only in the Slime Pits, these will corrode any adventurer who touches them. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Disintegration
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Dissolution

Rune Carved Stone
These walls make up the central chamber of the bottom of the Slime Pits, where the Slimy Rune of Zot is found. If the royal jelly is dead (or if you have high piety with Jiyva), these walls will turn into translucent rock, allowing easy access to the rune. Without these methods, these walls can only be destroyed with:
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Corruption

Unnaturally Hard Wall
You cannot affect this wall by any means.
Walls which are described as unnaturally hard are completely indestructible. The only way past them is to go around.

Translucent Unnaturally Hard Wall
The indestructible variant of translucent rock.

Open Sea
While not walls in the traditional sense, these impassable tiles mark the outer borders of the Shoals and certain Sewers layouts.

Endless Lava
The fiery equivalent of the open sea tiles, these mark the outer borders of a floor across lava pools.

Endless Salt
Much like open sea and endless lava, these mark the outer borders of the Desolation of Salt.

Iron Grate
These block movement, spells, and ranged attacks, but not LOS or smite-targeted attacks. They are usually found in special vaults, sealing away monsters with smite-targeted attacks, though they may also be generated as the result of stepping on a pressure plate. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Large Window
Large windows are found in the certain Sewers maps, and function identically to transparent rock walls.

History
Prior to 0.11, you could find walls of solid wax:

Wax walls are frequently found in killer bee vaults, though they can also appear near altars to Xom or in the Abyss. They often hide treasure, in particular royal jelly and honeycombs. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Boring beetles

Metal
The most resilient normal walls of all. Destroyed by:
*Shatter (at very high spell power)
*Corruption

Crystal
Immune to most wall-removal methods, these reflect fire and cold the way stone walls reflect lightning. Destroyed by:
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction

*Shatter

The most prominent features of the dungeon, walls block movement and often LOS. In general, destroying or bypassing them requires one of several wands or spells, sometimes fairly powerful.

Wall Varieties
Rock
This wall consists of simple rock.
Very common walls made from unworked stone that block LOS, but are relatively easily removed. Electrical attacks will bounce right off them. Rock is the only material for which the Passwall spell operates, allowing you to slip through it. Destroyed by:
*Dig
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption
*Boring beetles
*Eyes of devastation
*Dissolution

Translucent Rock
Identical to rock walls, but they don't block LOS. Bear in mind that you can't blink through them, even if you can see what's inside. Smite-targeted attacks are blocked.

Stone
More durable than rock walls, these require stronger magic to remove. As with rock walls, electrical attacks will bounce off these. Destroyed by:
*Shatter (at high spell power)
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at high spell power)
*Corruption

Translucent Stone
The stone analog to transparent rock.

Metal
The most resilient normal walls of all. Destroyed by:
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction (at very high spell power)
*Shatter (at very high spell power)
*Corruption

Crystal
Immune to most wall-removal methods, these reflect fire and cold the way stone walls reflect lightning. Destroyed by:
*Shatter
*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction

Trees
Functionally walls, these block movement, and can block LOS if you try to look beyond two adjacent ones. Destroyed by:
*Fire Bolt
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Mangroves
These function identically to trees, except that they block LOS. Destroyed by:
*Powerful Fire Magic
*Lightning Bolt
*Disintegration
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction

*Lee's Rapid Deconstruction
*Shatter
*Orb of Destruction
*Corruption

Large Window
Large windows are found in the certain Sewers maps, and function identically to transparent rock walls.

History
Prior to 0.11, you could find walls of solid wax:

version019
Tree form is a bad form that can be inflicted on the player by the polymorph other spell. Its most notable feature is that it entirely prevents the player from moving, but not from otherwise acting. Unlike most bad forms, it can be entered easily by quaffing a potion of lignification. While transformed into a tree, the player gains the following attributes:

Pros
*+50% HP
*+20+0.5×XL (+33 AC at level 27)
*48% GDR
*+10 strength
*Unarmed Combat base damage is set to 12
*Bonus to to-hit
*Huge size (immunity to most types of constriction)
*rPois
*rN+++
*Torment immunity
*The player's hunger is set to Satiated (gaining nutrition from the ground via their roots), and they don't hunger

Cons
*Cannot move, but can cast spells, use abilities, and attack
*EV is reduced to basically nil: (2 + size_modifier/2 + EV from Repulsion Field mutation, the same as when you are paralyzed)
*Cannot teleport without divine intervention (Lugonu's Bend Space ability works as normal)
*Cannot fly
*All equipment other than shields, weapons, helmets, and jewellery are melded.

Strategy
Tree Form, while it provides several severe drawbacks (melding most equipment, inability to move or teleport, loss of EV), can be helpful in some situations. Players in Tree Form get a large boost to their physical durability, which may help them survive fights against strong monsters. Another notable effect of Tree Form is its complete resistance to all forms of negative energy, including torment; a battle with a powerful enemy that relies heavily on negative energy or torment can be greatly assisted by entering Tree Form. (Some good examples include ghosts of mature draconians, Menkaure, or shadow dragons).

Characters that have ranged attacks will likely have an easier time in Tree Form than melee brutes, simply because they will still be able to attack their opponents should they blink away. Also, characters that don't or can't use much equipment (Transmuters, trolls, felids) will be able to make better use of Tree Form than a character that relies on their artefact armour to round out their defenses.

Just keep in mind that being in Tree Form will not allow you to escape. Should the battle go south, your only option will be to wait until the transformation wears off and hope you can survive long enough to flee; a potion of cancellation can help shorten the duration of Tree Form in an emergency.

History
Prior to 0.15, players in Tree Form could not eat or drink.

Prior to 0.14, it slowed the player by an amount based on your experience level ranging from 50% - 0%, prevented players from shouting, and followers of Fedhas Madash gained rF+ and rC+.

Prior to 0.13, it could make you vulnerable to fire, and the AC bonus and the speed penalty didn't depend on XL.

Like most bad forms, this was added in 0.12

Useful info
Acid dragon scales are a fairly lightweight armour and a decent armour choice for stealthy or spellcasting characters, providing decent AC and GDR in exchange for a very small encumbrance rating. Wearing these scales grants rCorr.

This item may randomly generate when you slay an acid dragon.

Desirability
The encumbrance rating of these scales is so small that even characters with a terrible Armour skill aptitude (such as spriggans, ogres, trolls, or deep elves) can easily overcome it.

Some players will prefer the extra AC these scales provide, while others may find that a different property (such as that from robe of the Archmagi, troll leather armour, or even just a leather armour of fire resistance) is more useful. Ultimately, it depends on your play style and what other equipment you have found.

Acid dragon scales are the lightest armour that does not permit casting of Ozocubu's Armour.

Quaffing a potion of curing cures poison, confusion and sickness, as well as restores 1d7 + 4 HP.

If your maximum hit points have been reduced by rot, quaffing a potion of curing will first heal the rot. Each point of rot reduces the effectiveness of healing by 2
points for every point of rot.

You feel better.

Strategy
These are best saved for times when you need to cure a negative status effect, preferring potions of heal wounds for restoring HP. However, if you should find yourself without any other healing or escape option (most commonly early in the game), these can be useful for restoring HP in a pinch. Just don't be surprised if whatever monster you're facing takes off most of the healed HP with its next attack.

If you plan to complete all dungeon branches, especially Tombs and Hell, there are multiple sources dealing rot damage, so it is handy to have a stock of potions of curing ready to cure it.

History
Failure to cast spells causes various generally nasty things to occur, becoming nastier with spell level and spell failure. Miscasts come in a severity scale 0, 1, 2 and 3. 0 is always harmless, although it can occasionally make a moderate amount of noise.

There is a special case if Hell's mystical force produces a miscast effect that spawns any monsters: those monsters are not summons and are worth experience.

Unless otherwise stated, all miscast effects for a given school and level are equally probable.

Air Magic
*1: 4-12 electric damage, or rain cloud, or Mephitic Cloud
*2: 3d8 electric explosion or Poisonous Cloud
*3: 12-40 Airstrike, or twister, or ball lightning

Conjurations
*1: smoke or 6-12 damage
*2: 9-25 damage or 3d12 explosion
*3: 12-40 damage or 3d20 explosion

Divinations
The Divinations school has long since been removed from the game, but its miscasts remain. They can be triggered by Sif Muna's wrath, the Staff of Wucad Mu, or any source of "random miscasts".

*1: confusion or no effect
*2: confusion plus either 1-3 INT loss or 3-12 MP loss
*3: confusion plus either 3-5 INT loss or 5-24 MP loss

Earth Magic
*1: harmless
*2: 10-22 damage (checked by AC)
*3: 80% chance: 3d15 explosion, or 20% chance: Petrification

Hexes
*1: corona or random uselessness
*2: 42% chance: Vertigo, or 42% chance: Slowing, or 14% chance: Silence
*3: Fall asleep for 3-9 turns, or Magic vulnerability effect on self, or Confusion, or 0-18 glow

Charms
*1: corona or random uselessness
*2: Weakness (3/7 chance), slowing (3/7), or berserk (1/7)
*3: Paralysis for 2-7 turns, confusion, 0-18 glow, or cancellation effect and plus 4-6 MP loss (can actually remove some magical contamination)

Fire Magic
*1: summons 1-2 fire vortexes, or 2-14 fire damage only if the player has fire vulnerability (rF-)
*2: 5-33 fire damage, or 3d14 Fireball
*3: 9-41 fire damage plus temporarily reduced fire resistance (rF-), or 3d20 Fireball, or Sticky Flame

Ice Magic
*1: nothing, or 4-8 damage only if the player has cold vulnerability (rC-).
*2: 5-16 ice damage plus temporary -Potion, or 3d11 ice explosion
*3: 9-31 ice damage plus Frozen status effect, or Freezing Cloud

Necromancy
Torment, rotting, and draining damage have no effect on undead. For spells, no effect at all if Kiku** and Piety/150 chance. These effects are also frequently seen as death curses from non-plain mummies. For death curses, if Kiku**, then Kiku has a 1/2 chance of blocking it entirely, otherwise reduces the severity by one level.
*1: Slowing, rotting, or 5-19 torment damage
*2: Draining, 3 shadows, or 15-37 torment damage
*3: Draining, reaper, soul eater, random stat loss 1-7, rotting, or player-targeted torment

Poison Magic
Poison resistance blocks the damage and stat loss, and renders the clouds harmless.
*1: 7-15 poison damage or Mephitic Cloud on your location only
*2: 14-30 poison damage, large Mephitic Cloud, or temporary poison vulnerability
*3: 20-54 poison damage, Poisonous Cloud, or random stat loss 1-5

Summonings
*1: 5-13 damage (50% chance), or spatial vortex (17% chance), or lesser demon (33% chance)
*2: 1-3 spatial vortices (1/6 chance), common demon (1/3), or 2-3 small abominations (1/2)
*3: 1-3 worldbinders, or 1-2 common demons, greater demon, banishment, or Malign Gateway

Spatial vortexes and greater demons summoned in this manner are durably summoned, so they do not time out and cannot be abjured.

Translocations
*1: 4-12 damage (1/2 chance), 4-10 damage and Blink (1/3), or spatial vortex (1/6)
*2: 9-31 damage (3/7 chance), 5-13 damage + confusion + 66% chance blink, 33% chance teleport (2/7), 1-3 spatial vortices (1/7), or banishment (1/7).
*3: 15-43 damage plus Dimension Anchor, 9-25 damage plus confusion plus teleport, banishment, or 0-18 glow.

Transmutations
*1: 1-11 damage (1/2 chance) , summon 2-4 giant cockroaches (1/10), or random uselessness (2/5)
*2: short polymorph (1/5 chance) , 3-25 damage (2/5), weakness (1/5), or 0-18 glow (1/5)
*3: longer polymorph (1/2 chance), 3-20 damage plus 0-34 glow (1/6), 5-27 damage plus remove mutation (1/6), 5-27 damage plus 1-2 bad mutations (1/6)

Hell effects
Hell's mystical force selects a miscast or other effect with the probabilities given below. As noted further down, it will always try to place a Malign Gateway instead of banishing, as banishment is rarely more than annoyance for a character that can handle Hell.
*Necromancy miscast: 16.66%
*Summoning miscast: 8.33%
*Conjurations miscast: 4.16%
*Charms miscast: 2.08%
*Hexes miscast: 2.08%
*Miscast appropriate to each branch: 22.22% (Fire magic miscast in Gehenna, Ice magic miscast in Cocytus, Necromancy miscast in Tartarus, and Earth magic miscast in Dis)
*Summon a greater demon appropriate to each branch: 14.15% (Brimstone fiends in Gehenna, Ice fiends in Cocytus, Shadow fiends in Tartarus, and any greater demon in Dis)
*Summon 1-5 random monsters: 9.88%
*Nothing happens: 19.75%
History
In 0.16, many magic miscast effects received a significant overhaul.

Prior to 0.14, Hell's mystical force could paralyze the player.

Prior to 0.13, Zot traps inflicted a random severity 3 miscast, instead of having a hardcoded list of effects.
