This article is about the spell. For the artefact crossbow by this name, see the Hellfire (unrand).

Hellfire is a beam-targeted spell which delivers an extremely damaging cloud of fire: it ignores all fire resistance, ignores , and cannot be evaded in any way.

Burst of Hellfire, the upgrade of Hellfire, deals slightly less damage but is smite-targeted and can affect anything in one's LOS.

Like conventional fire, hellfire is capable of igniting trees and bushes. Conservation functions normally against hellfire.

__NOTOC__
Hellfire-capable Monsters
Hellfire - This spell has a range of 7, requires a line of sight to the target, and creates an unavoidable 3×3 burst. Damage in each tile is 3d20 hellfire.
*Asmodeus
*Azrael
*Brimstone fiend
*Deep elf sorcerer
*Dispater
*Draconian scorcher
*Hell sentinel
*Serpent of Hell (Gehenna)

Burst of Hellfire - This deadlier version of the previous uses smite targeting to direct a 3×3 burst of hellfire against targets in LOS. Damage is 5d7 hellfire (when the target is a monster) and 3d15 hellfire (when the target is you).
*Azrael
*Deep elf high priest
*Draconian scorcher
*Draconian zealot
*Hellion

Hellfire Sources for the Player
There are few methods available for players to gain access to hellfire. They are all found in the late game, and usually at a heavy cost. (Burst of hellfire is not available at all.)
*Evoking the Staff of Dispater will reliably cast hellfire (Power = Evocations×8, max damage 3d57), but at a cost of 5-23 HP (average 14, but never fatal), 2-6 MP (average 4), and 100 food.
*The demonspawn Fire mutation (tier 1, rank 3) allows you to cast hellfire (damage based on XP level, max 6d28 at level 27), but at a cost of 15% of your max HP per use.

All player-launched sources of hellfire require a line of sight and create an unavoidable 3×3 burst:
*Range: 7
*To-Hit Number: (20+(Power/10))
*Damage: calc_dice(3, 10 + (Power * 3) / 4)

Hellfire Resistance
Some monsters (typically demons) possess hellfire resistance, rendering them immune to damage from hellfire and regular fire. Players cannot acquire hellfire immunity, and the only available method for reducing hellfire damage is the damage-shaving ability of deep dwarves.
Reading a scroll of immolation will affect all creatures in your line of sight as though they were the victim of an Inner Flame spell; until the status effect wears off, killing them will cause them to release a violent fiery explosion. The size and damage of the explosion varies based on the size of the monster slain, and is powerful enough to severely injure or kill careless characters. Used wisely, however, these scrolls can be very useful; coupled with a decent ranged weapon or an attack wand, you can safely kill a single weak monster and initiate a chain reaction that eradicates everything around it. If you happen to have rF++ or better, preservation, and a high , you can generally ignore the risks involved in using these scrolls and simply resist the explosion. Consider their use in high-value, monster-packed areas like Vaults:5 -- it's very good for clearing the entrance if you read it immediately upon descending and manage to kill 2-3 vault guards, the chain reaction will take care of the rest. }}

The ice cave is a temporary sub-branch filled with frost-themed (and sometimes undead or demonic) creatures. It can be found in the middle-Dungeon or the Lair, though not all games will have one. These entrances are often guarded by a pack of ice beasts, white imps or freezing wraiths, and you can tell when you're near one when you see ice-covered floors and walls.

Layout
There are many different layouts possible for the ice cave. A common simple one is a series of large rooms, each of which is defended by ice beasts or ice statues. An even shorter, simpler one tosses you into one large room filled with foes which has a strangely colored tile in the middle of the room. Stepping on it will teleport you to an identical chamber with even more guards. More elaborate ice caves will be long, narrow tunnels, often choked with harmful freezing clouds and concluded with a well-defended stone structure. In all cases, the majority of the loot will be found in the very back of the cave, though lesser caches can sometimes be found along the way.

Strategy
*While Fire Magic or a flaming weapon will go a long toward wiping out anything you find in the caves, having cold resistance is much more important. Without it, almost all enemies will be dealing significant amounts of extra damage to you, and walking through freezing clouds without resistance can drain you quickly. Fortunately for those who come in without rC+++, much of the equipment you find will provide cold resistance. Unfortunately, most of this equipment will only be found at the very end of the cave.
*If you have Mephitic Cloud and poison resistance, a safe way past areas with freezing clouds is to place mephitic clouds in empty tiles and only walk on them; new clouds cannot form in tiles that already have another kind of cloud.
*Wands of digging let you get around statues or cloud areas. Many ice caves have rivers of deep water designed to make you walk the long way around, but flight, controlled blink or levitate gets you over those rivers so you can skip much of the preliminaries.
*If you start encountering powerful demons midway through your explorations, be aware that an Ice fiend is probably waiting for you at the end, along with a pack of simulacra and ice devils. Step cautiously! You don't want to enter melee with the Ice fiend if you have any alternative, but getting mobbed by its friends while it torments you can be just as deadly. Lure enemies into combat one at a time as best you can, and don't be afraid to run if need be: discretion may be the better part of valor for mid-level players.
*Characters who specialize in Hexes and Stabbing (spriggan enchanters, for instance) should bear in mind that monsters with cold resistance are immune to Ensorcelled Hibernation, making this a VERY dangerous branch to explore.
Most characters will find this amulet useful, but only as a switch. It provides two levels of negative energy resistance, and thus can quickly render you drain-resistant if you find yourself looking down a shadow dragon's maw, and electricity resistance is fantastic when facing Nikola, storm dragons, or an electric golem. Don't leave it on, though; the -TELE can sometimes cost you your life, and the increased hunger is not much fun either.

History
One of the oldest artefacts, it also used to provide rF+ and rC+. Sadly, that made it somewhat game-breaking, so these were removed in the pre-DCSS days.
