All monsters have a level of intelligence that determines certain behaviours, such as tracking, avoiding danger and cooperating with allies. In general, a monster's intelligence is a secondary consideration compared to its physical and magical abilities, but it does have a number of effects, mostly in fairly specific situations.

Levels of Intelligence
There are three levels of monster intelligence:
# Brainless intelligence: Plants, zombies, jellies, golems, elementals, insects
# Animal intelligence: Animals, some non-zombie undead
# Human intelligence: Humanoids, some other powerful/magical monsters

Effects of intelligence
The following is a non-exhaustive list of effects of monster intelligence.
* Brainless monsters will blunder into shallow water, traps and dangerous clouds (except miasma). Intelligent monsters will avoid clouds unless they are resistant. A strong enough intelligent monster may choose to charge through a weak trap.
* Non-brainless monsters will often try to make space for their allies to attack you.
* Intelligent monsters search and travel more effectively and will continue to hunt for you longer after hearing noise or losing sight of you.
* Intelligent ranged monsters will attempt to regain line of sight rather than charging directly at you.
* Non-brainless monsters will retreat if they can't reach you or shoot at you.
* Intelligent monsters may be able to guess your location even when you are invisible.
* Brainless monsters cannot be pacified.
* Butchering intelligent creatures angers Zin.
History
Prior to 0.17, there were 6 categories of intelligence: plant, insect, reptile, animal, human and high.

A wand of random effects creates an unpredictable effect when zapped. There is a high probability of yielding a damaging or at least harmful effect, but its use in combat is risky. Although you might wind up blasting an enemy for heavy damage, you must decide if it's worth the risk of hasting or rendering invisible your opponent instead. Each of the effects has an equal chance of being selected.

Tips & Tricks
*Using a wand of random effects may risk penance, depending on your god's restrictions: all of the good gods punish draining, Zin punishes mutating, Cheibriados punishes haste.

History
In 0.21, mutation and poison were added to the random effects to discourage using the wand as a source of haste in the late game.

Completely reworked in 0.20 to the present list of effects, minus malmutate and venom bolt.

Some wands were removed in 0.18, though the wand of random effects kept a few of the removed ones. As a result the chance to deal direct damage with a wand of random effects dropped by about 11%. Digging was also removed at this time.

Prior to 0.14, gods would forgive the player for disliked effects produced by evoking an already identified wand of random effects.

A wand is a magical device that contains several charges of a specific spell or effect.

A player may zap a wand in the inventory with the V key (that is, evoking it). This releases its magical effect at a target of the player's choice, and one charge of the wand will be depleted. The number of charges on a wand is always known, and wands of the same type will merge when picked up, taking up only one inventory slot and having the combined number of charges that the two previous wands had.

Once a wand's charges are used up, the wand is destroyed.

A wand's spell power equals 15+2.5×Evocations, though this is still limited by the spell power caps for the spell cast. For monsters zapping wands, the power is normally 30+hit dice, although this can vary greatly depending on the type of wand. Some monsters, particularly uniques, may start with wands in their inventory.

Xom is greatly entertained (200) when you use a wand of random effects on yourself or others.
High-tier wands
Some wands are considered too dangerous to be generated in the inventory of monsters with HD less than 5. Monsters with the No HT wand flag are also excluded. Ijyb is the exception to this rule.

*Wand of iceblast
*Wand of paralysis
*Wand of disintegration

History
Prior to 0.21, wands did not merge on pickup and had a charge limit; hence you could have multiple wands of the same time in your inventory. Wands would not destroy on reaching 0 charges, and scrolls of recharging existed which would recharge on average about half a wand's charges. Wands of confusion and lightning also existed. Wands had an unknown number of charges on pickup, and zapping the wand in this state would waste charges. The number of charges could be found out by identifying the wand, either using a scroll of identify or by zapping the wand with evocations skill, which had a chance to identify it.

Prior to 0.20, wands of heal wounds, haste, teleportation, and slowing existed. Another evocable item called rods were available, and rods of clouds and scattershot were changed into their respective wands.

Prior to 0.20, Deep dwarves had an innate ability to recharge wands.

Prior to 0.18, wands' charge differences were not easily visible even if identified.

0.18 removed the wand of cold, draining, fire, fireball, frost, invisibility, and magic darts, but introduced wands of acid and iceblast. Wands of fire, cold and draining were high-tier wands.

Prior to 0.16, wands were not automatically identified when picked up. However, zapping a wand with an unknown number of charges did not waste any charges.

Prior to 0.15, wands weighted 10.0 aum each.
A special armour made for Nagas, to wear over their tails.

Naga bardings are a type of armor intended for nagas to wear in place of boots, which do not fit on their snake-shaped lower halves. Although significantly less common than boots, they provide double the AC and can be enchanted twice as heavily. In exchange, they do have a slight encumbrance rating, but this has no effect on your spellcasting, stealth, unarmed combat speed, or melee accuracy. Their only impact is a loss of 2 points to your evasion. Possible brands include:

*Fire resistance
*Cold resistance
*Flying
*Stealth
*Running (flavored in-game as "speedy slithering")

AC from naga barding is not penalized by a naga's oddly-shaped body. Non-nagas cannot wear naga barding, though centaurs have centaur barding, a type of barding intended for them.
As for all rod-based spells, increasing Evocations raised accuracy and damage.
“He that spares his rod hates his son: but he that loves him chastens him early.”<br>
-King James 2000 Bible, Proverbs 13:24
}}
A rod of striking is an unusual melee-themed rod which is activated simply by striking the enemy with it. This deals the normal damage for attacking with a rod (identical to attacking with a club, including the rod's enchantment level), then deals an additional 1d(1.5×Evocations). The target's is applied to each of these separately. Each such attack costs 1 MP, and it will not inflict the additional damage when its MP is at 0. Like all rods, it uses its own MP for powering its effect, and recharges automatically at a rate based on its enchantment and your Evocations skill.

History
Prior to 0.13, the rod of striking could be evoked for the Striking spell, firing weak blasts of non-elemental damage. It was generally considered useless once the player got past the early game.

Prior to 0.10, this rod could be chosen as starting equipment for artificers, but was much weaker (dealing only up to 1d8 damage, the same as magic dart).

Prior to 0.9, this rod was useful for training your Evocation skill early on without having to waste wand charges and scrolls of recharging, or significant amounts of food. With the death of the victory dance, the rod became almost entirely useless.

Re: The Spell Set Update
That process went a lot smoother than I expected it to. Thanks for putting that tool together. That being said, I noticed today that some spell casting monsters weren't updated: I just added a spell set to the Cherub page, but I'm wondering why it was left out at all, and which other monsters weren't affected. Any ideas? --MoogleDan 19:35, 27 January 2013 (CET)

:It seems that Cherubs don't know any spells and they can't heal any monsters. But, they have an ability: they can sing hymns. It's basically a variant of the "battle-frenzy" used by orcish knights. Holy monsters with lower HD are roused by these hymns and they do a 30% more damage in melee. This ability is completely useless and never used, because Cherubs have the lowest HD among all the holy monsters. (silly devs) --CommanderC 21:25, 27 January 2013 (CET)

Glyph templates
Nice work on the glyph templates! I think it might also be useful to put the glyph templates into a category, maybe :Category:Monster glyphs or :Category:Monster glyph templates and that category would then go under :Category:Glyph templates. Do you think you can get your bot to do that? --Flun 23:23, 15 June 2013 (CEST)

Aptitude Modules
I will admit that I don't really get how these work. However, I have a minor request, that I hope is fairly simple: can we display positive aptitudes with a + in front of them? That just makes them immediately stand out, for example, if you're looking at the skill pages to find a species with a positive aptitude in some skill you want to play with. -Ion frigate (talk) 11:24, 20 September 2013 (CEST)

:Done. The key to understand Module:Apt is the function mw.loadData. That function returns the m object we defined in Module:Table_of_aptitudes, because the last line of that module was return m. --CommanderC (talk) 15:20, 20 September 2013 (CEST)

::Thanks! And I just realized that the skill tables are missing from the weapon skill pages for some reason. I'll go ahead and add them, I think I see how.
::Oh, and another request: might we be able to do a flavour bot, similar to the monster stats bot, once 0.12 comes out? The devs seem to enjoy adding vaguely relevant quotes all the time and we might as well grab them. -Ion frigate (talk) 08:38, 21 September 2013 (CEST)
Special count logging
I ask you as the best coder in the wiki team. Do you think it is possible to have a formula in my RC file (=> collecting info for '#' prompted log file) that just tells me and others how many identifiable magical items are still unknown at any given XL? Exampe given: 10/15 wands at XL10. Or is it necessary to beg the developers to include this small feature? - Background of my wish is to prove that not only some rings or wands but even base use items like scrolls of remove curse are too frequently not available for long times. You can get to Lair:8 and still 8 of 20 scrolls didn't appear, or only 1 amulet and 2 rings while exploring 20+ levels. The Random number generator is no longer providing a balanced game as for item frequency. Ashenzari piety is near impossible to advance if you can't find enough suitable scrolls. Well, don't care for my background musings and tell me your diagnosis if a mini script formula could provide the 'x/y items at z XL' logging info I want? And if yes, could you help out to write it? Thank you in advance. -- Bwijn (talk) 19:43, 17 December 2013 (CET)

:Sorry, but it cannot be implemented. Scripts are allowed to take notes, but they can only obtain information about individual items, not about item types or subtypes. Have you tried the \ command? --CommanderC (talk) 22:06, 17 December 2013 (CET)

::A pity that it can't be logged by implementation as you say. Yes, of course I use the \ command ingame frequently. - The underlying idea was to make visible the increasingly missing balance of item generation. No ad hoc notes, only logged information matters for my intention. -- Bwijn (talk) 22:36, 17 December 2013 (CET)

Xerxes314: verified for 0.13.1

version013
Your score is determined at the end of the game, win or lose. It is then recorded for posterity on the high score table (along with your species, background, character level, Dungeon level, and cause of death).

Score Calculation
Your final score is based on these factors.
*Total experience.
*Amount of gold you are carrying.
*Number of runes collected.
*Number of turns taken (only if you escaped with the orb of Zot).
*Total Points are capped at 99,999,999.

Experience Score
The amount of points added based on your XP is not capped, but has diminishing returns, eventually only giving 10% after 3 million exp:
*175,000 points at 250k exp
*475,000 points at 1mil exp
*875,000 points at 3mil exp
*10% of exp after 3mil is added to points

Examples:
*250,000 XP is level 19 for a Human, or level 17 for a race with 150% experience requirement.
*750,000 XP is level 26 for a Human, or level 23 for a race with 150% experience requirement.

Note that you still gain experience after reaching level 27, up to about 9 million XP. This is a minor part of the total score for a winning game, usually less than 10%. However, in a non-winning game, it usually accounts for the majority of the total score.

Gold Score
Since the amount of gold you have is not multiplied by anything before being added to your score, this is a very small percentage (<1%) of the total score. This is capped at 1,000,000.

Rune Bonus
You get 10,000 points per rune and then 1,000 points * number of runes * (number of runes + 2)

In addition to the above, if you escape with the Orb of Zot, you get 250,000 points for the Orb and 2,000 points for each Rune, plus an additional 4,000.

This is a minor part of the total score, usually less than 5-10%, but the number of runes you have also affects the turn bonus.

Number of Turns
If you escape with the Orb, you get a bonus of 6,250,000,000*(runes^2)/turns. This is where the vast majority of points come from, and is the reason why it is best to complete games as quickly as possible with as many runes as possible in order to maximize score.

Assuming you grabbed all 15 runes:
*70,312,500 points at 20k turns
*56,250,000 points at 25k turns
*28,125,000 points at 50k turns

Blade Hands is a level 5 Transmutations spell that drastically increases a character's deadliness in Unarmed Combat, but impedes spell-casting while active. It has a short duration and a significant hunger cost when first learned, but its damage output is impressive even into the late game when coupled with high Unarmed Combat skill.

While under the effect of this spell you gain no benefit from the Claws mutation, and any gloves, weapons, shields, or other wielded items meld into your body upon casting. Casting it also immediately ends any other form-changing Transmutations effect (Ice Form, Necromutation, etc.).

Damage = 8 + (Strength + Dexterity)/3 + Unarmed Combat bonus<br>(Also adds +6 to off-hand auxiliary attack damage)

Tips & Tricks
*Like all edged attacks, Blade Hands is a terrible choice for fighting hydras.
*Felids walking on Blade Paws will suffer significant Stealth penalties
*This spell will meld away even cursed weapons, allowing Ashenzari worshipers to have their hands bound and still use Unarmed Combat.
*Remember that you lose the benefits of any melded items so long as the spell is in effect.

History
Prior to 0.10, blade hands had higher base damage and lower dependence on stats.
