'''Force Lance''' is a level 4 [[Conjurations]] spell which shoots a shaft of force at a single target, dealing damage on par with [[Iskenderun's Mystic Blast]]. Its range is short, but it can knock its target back up to two spaces and briefly stun it (4-9 [[aut]]s). These additional effects can only occur if the target took damage, and lighter monsters are easier to knock back than heavy ones.

==Tips & Tricks==
*Although you can simply cast Force Lance directly at the target, aiming your spell beyond it and to the left or right will allow you to direct where your opponent is shoved. If you'd like to force your opponent back when he's got a [[wall]] directly behind him, this can be very helpful.
*The push-back and stun effects allow you to kite opponents even if you aren't playing a fast character. However, these effects are not especially reliable (especially against armoured or larger opponents) and the spell can miss; don't think it makes you invincible when fighting melee opponents.
*You can't use this spell to push monsters into [[lava]] or [[deep water]].
*Be careful before using this spell against ranged attackers. You really don't want to create space between yourself and a [[centaur warrior]]. Only use this against those sorts of enemies if there's a wall or monster behind them to hold them in place.

==History==
Prior to [[0.14]], Force Lance was a level 5 spell.

Prior to [[0.13]], Force Lance was a level 2 spell in the [[book of Conjurations]] with less range and damage.

Force Lance was added in [[0.12]].

{{flavour|A magical armour made from the golden scales of a golden dragon. It is extremely heavy and cumbersome but confers resistances to cold, fire, and poison on its wearer.}}

'''Gold dragon armour''' is one of the heaviest body armours in the game, providing excellent physical defense as well as resistance to [[fire]], [[cold]], and [[poison]]. Unfortunately, it requires very high [[strength]] to wear effectively, and its [[encumbrance rating]] is massive enough to make magic very difficult and the [[Dodging]] skill much less effective. Although extremely rare, it can be created by enchanting a [[gold dragon hide]] with a [[scroll of enchant armour]] or, very rarely, given as an armour gift to [[Okawaru]] worshipers.

It takes 13 turns to wear or remove gold dragon armour.

==Desirability==
Although three guaranteed resistances and excellent [[AC]] and [[GDR]] may sound tempting, realize that few [[species]] can naturally have enough strength to wear it comfortably, and that ruining your [[ev]]asion and spellcasting often isn't worth the tradeoff. These armours are more useful to [[troll]]s and [[ogre]]s because they have difficulty finding resistances elsewhere, and their evasion score is already heavily penalized. Others can often find better performance elsewhere, though high-strength races such as [[hill orc]]s and [[minotaur]]s might still consider it. Consider yourself warned.
==Re: The Spell Set Update==
That process went a lot smoother than I expected it to. Thanks for putting that tool together. That being said, I noticed today that some spell casting monsters weren't updated: I just added a spell set to the Cherub page, but I'm wondering why it was left out at all, and which other monsters weren't affected. Any ideas? --[[User:MoogleDan|MoogleDan]] 19:35, 27 January 2013 (CET)

:It seems that Cherubs don't know any spells and they can't heal any monsters. But, they have an ability: they can sing hymns. It's basically a variant of the "battle-frenzy" used by orcish knights. Holy monsters with lower HD are roused by these hymns and they do a 30% more damage in melee. This ability is completely useless and never used, because Cherubs have the lowest HD among all the holy monsters. Nice work on the glyph templates! I think it might also be useful to put the glyph templates into a category, maybe [[:Category:Monster glyphs]] or [[:Category:Monster glyph templates]] and that category would then go under [[:Category:Glyph templates]]. Do you think you can get your bot to do that? --[[User:Flun|Flun]] 23:23, 15 June 2013 (CEST)

I will admit that I don't really get how these work. However, I have a minor request, that I hope is fairly simple: can we display positive aptitudes with a + in front of them? That just makes them immediately stand out, for example, if you're looking at the skill pages to find a species with a positive aptitude in some skill you want to play with. -[[User:Ion frigate|Ion frigate]] ([[User talk:Ion frigate|talk]]) 11:24, 20 September 2013 (CEST)

:Done. The key to understand Module:Apt is the function mw.loadData. That function returns the ''m'' object we defined in Module:Table_of_aptitudes, because the last line of that module was ''return m''. --[[User:CommanderC|CommanderC]] ([[User talk:CommanderC|talk]]) 15:20, 20 September 2013 (CEST)
::Thanks! And I just realized that the skill tables are missing from the weapon skill pages for some reason. I'll go ahead and add them, I think I see how.
::Oh, and another request: might we be able to do a flavour bot, similar to the monster stats bot, once 0.12 comes out? The devs seem to enjoy adding vaguely relevant quotes all the time and we might as well grab them. -[[User:Ion frigate|Ion frigate]] ([[User talk:Ion frigate|talk]]) 08:38, 21 September 2013 (CEST)
== Special count logging ==

I ask you as the best coder in the wiki team. Do you think it is possible to have a formula in my RC file (=> collecting info for '#' prompted log file) that just tells me and others how many identifiable magical items are still unknown at any given XL? Exampe given: 10/15 wands at XL10. Or is it necessary to beg the developers to include this small feature? - Background of my wish is to prove that not only some rings or wands but even base use items like scrolls of remove curse are too frequently not available for long times. You can get to Lair:8 and still 8 of 20 scrolls didn't appear, or only 1 amulet and 2 rings while exploring 20+ levels. The Random number generator is no longer providing a balanced game as for item frequency. Ashenzari piety is near impossible to advance if you can't find enough suitable scrolls. Well, don't care for my background musings and tell me your diagnosis if a mini script formula could provide the 'x/y items at z XL' logging info I want? And if yes, could you help out to write it? Thank you in advance. -- [[User:Bwijn|Bwijn]] ([[User talk:Bwijn|talk]]) 19:43, 17 December 2013 (CET)

:Sorry, but it cannot be implemented. Scripts are allowed to take notes, but they can only obtain information about individual items, not about item types or subtypes. Have you tried the \ command? --[[User:CommanderC|CommanderC]] ([[User talk:CommanderC|talk]]) 22:06, 17 December 2013 (CET)

::A pity that it can't be logged by implementation as you say. Yes, of course I use the \ command ingame frequently. - The underlying idea was to make visible the increasingly missing balance of item generation. No ad hoc notes, only logged information matters for my intention. -- [[User:Bwijn|Bwijn]] ([[User talk:Bwijn|talk]]) 22:36, 17 December 2013 (CET)

-William Shakespeare, _Romeo and Juliet_}}

'''Potions''' are useful consumable items represented by the <nowiki>'</nowiki>'''!'''<nowiki>'</nowiki> character. Every potion has a specific effect (beneficial or harmful!) when [[quaff]]ed. You can't drink potions while [[berserk]], in [[bat form]], [[wisp form]], [[tree form]], [[fungus form]], or [[lich form]], or if you're a [[mummy]].

Drinking most potions will increase your [[satiation]] by 40 points, except for [[vampire]]s (who only get satiation from [[potions of blood]] and [[potion of coagulated blood|coagulated blood]]). The primary effect of most potions is halved for Thirsty (or worse) Vampires.

==Potion Identification==
Apart from using a [[scroll of identify]], there are several ways to determine the identity of potions you've picked up.

Some race/class combinations begin with potions identified. [[Spriggan]]s recognize potions of porridge, [[vampire]]s recognize potions of blood, [[assassin]]s recognize [[potions of poison]], [[healer]]s recognize potions of curing and heal wounds, and [[wanderer]]s may start with some identified potions in their inventory. Wanderers also have a chance to recognize potions of curing regardless of inventory.

Quaffing a random potion is the most obvious way to figure out its contents, but may be dangerous. You'll want to be somewhere safe with no monsters in sight, and if possible, with some already identified [[potions of curing]] on hand to cure the worst offenders ([[potions of poison]], [[potions of strong poison]], and [[potions of decay]]). [[Potions of degeneration]] and [[potions of mutation]] are also harmful, and those are less likely to be easily remedied.

Monsters sometimes drink potions within your [[line of sight]]. This will identify the potion in most cases, but there is sometimes ambiguity with healing, in which case the potion type will be inscribed with '''{tried by monster}'''. When this happens, the potion is either a potion of curing or heal wounds, or rarely blood/coagulated blood (if a [[list of vampires|vampire]] drank it).

You may also guess at a potion's identity by the size of the stacks in your inventory. Potions of curing are the most frequent (about 25% of all potions generated), followed by potions of heal wounds (about 13% of all potions generated). This is very unreliable if your highest potion stack is only 2 or 3 since potions are sometimes generated in batches. On the other hand, [[potions of porridge]], [[potion of gain strength|gain strength]], [[potion of gain dexterity|gain dexterity]], [[potion of gain intelligence|gain intelligence]], [[potion of cure mutation|cure mutation]], [[potion of experience|experience]] and [[potion of decay|decay]] are very rare (less than 1% of all generated potions), so you're unlikely to pick one of those if you only drink potions when you have two of the same type.

Some more notes on potion identification:
*A potion found in a small pile (2 or 3 potions) will never be a potion of gain strength, gain dexterity, gain intelligence, experience, or [[potion of restore abilities|restore abilities]]. However, some special [[vault]]s such as [[bailey]]s can contain multiple potions of gain stats or cure mutation in separate piles.
*Potions of strong poison are never randomly generated before level 11.
*Potions of blood are always red potions (25% viscous red, 25% sedimented red, 50% red) and are dropped by vampires.
**Potions of coagulated blood are always gluggy, lumpy, sedimented, or viscous, and are either red or brown.
**Carrying an unidentified potion of blood for at least 2000 turns will turn it into a potion of coagulated blood, identifying both potions in the process.
*Potions of porridge are either gluggy white or gluggy brown.
*If you find an altar of Cheibriados surrounded by 2 potions and 2 fruits, these potions are either [[potions of slowing]] of [[potions of speed]].
*A certain entry [[vault]] for the [[Orcish Mines]] has multiple potions scattered about in addition to several placed behind a door. All of these are bad potions (such as slowing or paralysis).

==Potion Conservation==
[[Ice Magic]] and other sources of [[cold]] damage may shatter the potions in your inventory; the [[conservation]] intrinsic reduces the chance of this happening. You can obtain conservation through an [[amulet of conservation]], [[cloak of preservation]], [[Jiyva]], [[Maxwell's Patent Armour]], or a rare [[demonspawn mutation]].
"Then gave I her, - so tutor'd by my art, -<br>A sleeping potion, which so took effect<br>As I intended, for it wrought on her<br>The form of death: meantime I writ to Romeo<br>That he should hither come as this dire night,<br>To help to take her from her borrow'd grave,<br>Being the time the potion's force should cease."

-William Shakespeare, _Romeo and Juliet_}}

==Potion Identification==

==Potion Conservation==
