Does Evocations do anything for this item? --JohnnyCat (talk) 18:46, 4 February 2017 (CET)

:Yes it does, it affects the radius of the effect (only creatures within this radius will be pushed back) and how many tiles the creatures will be pushed back. If you want more detail, check out the 'evoke_item', 'wind_blast' and '_gale_push_dist' functions in evoke.cc. --Fingolfin (talk) 20:04, 5 February 2017 (CET)
Fingolfinhttp://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=User:Fingolfin&diff=43268User:Fingolfin2016-10-07T21:22:09Z
Fingolfin: /* Victories, deceptions and general crawling */ FIRST 15-RUNE VICTORY, YAY

* My first 3-rune victory, I couldn't have done it without Majang's Caster Walk-Through (even though this character was just a melee brute, I stayed alive thanks to Majang's great advice, many thanks to him) : Jory the Slayer, Minotaur Monk of Ru.
Your character will be given a skill title based on his current skill set. To determine the title, a character's skills are placed into five tiers: Lvl 1-7, 8-14, 15-20, 21-26, and 27. Your character's title is determined by their highest skill -- any time a different skill surpasses your current highest skill, your title will change to reflect it. Your title will also change when your current highest skill reaches a new tier. The first skill to reach level 27 will determine your character's final title.
Donald the Adventurer is an unique adventurer whose dialogue varies based on your current religion and the branch you find him in. He is stronger than an orc knight, capable of swimming through deep water, and often generates with a good wand and a shield of reflection, making him unusually dangerous to ranged weapon users and casters who rely on blockable spells.
*The Orcish Mines:3-4
*The Vaults:1-4
*Labyrinths

Tips & Tricks
*If his shield is one of reflection, it makes combat significantly more dangerous and restricts your spell set (nothing ruins your day more than a reflected Lehudib's Crystal Spear). Bear in mind that Bolt spells and area of effect attack spells are unreflectable, such as Freezing Cloud, Poisonous Cloud, Fireball, Lee's Rapid Deconstruction, Fulminant Prism, etc.
*His HD means he's still susceptible to Mephitic Cloud, and when he's confused his blocking ability and reflection powers will be set to zero.
*Trapping him with a throwing net also negates his blocking ability, though he might be able to reflect it back at you.

Trivia
*When confused, Donald may make quacking noises, which is probably a reference to Donald Duck.

History
Donald received a significant upgrade in 0.6.
Useful Info
Sigmund the Dreaded is a deadly unique human, and one of the earliest uniques you can encounter. He is always generated with a powerful scythe, a robe, and several brutal spells. Sigmund is notorious for being one of the deadliest uniques in all of DCSS.

Location
*The Dungeon:2-6

monster spells

Tips & Tricks
*Sigmund's damage output in melee is devastating for low-level characters, but his biggest threats are in his spell list. An invisible Sigmund is almost unbeatable in early-game melee, his Throw Flame lets him brutalize you at range, and expect a swift end if he confuses you and you're out of potions of curing.
*Avoiding Sigmund is usually the wisest thing you can do. If you find him sleeping early on, just walk away and return once you've gained a few levels and found some better gear.
*There are some options for low-level characters who want to take him out immediately. Mephitic Cloud leaves him unable to use magic and almost hopeless in melee, while a few zaps from a good wand will annihilate him. A wand of polymorph may also turn him into a less deadly form and will probably make him drop his scythe, but it's less of a safe bet; Sigmund the centaur is much deadlier than normal.
*If all else fails and you have no choice but to engage him early, don't be afraid to use any useful potions you've identified. Berserk, haste, or might go a long way toward helping you take him down, and a few potions of heal wounds can keep you in the fight longer than you'd otherwise last.

Trivia
* Donald may say to the player "That guy with the scythe is really mean", which is a reference to Sigmund.
Useful Info
Worms are early-game monsters that are durable and powerful. Though they are quite slow, their fast regeneration can make them difficult to kite unless you can deal enough damage quickly enough. They can be found as early as Dungeon:1 and are an excellent food source.

Tips & Tricks
*Worms have high damage and HP for their level, so don't be afraid to take a few steps back and pelt them from afar if they're getting the better of you in melee.
*Poisoning a worm, then backing up while the poison works its magic, is one of the safer ways to deal with them. You may have to poison it a few times to counter its regeneration.
*Any character can kill them easily by kiting them with a spear, even with no training.

If you leave Sif Muna (voluntarily or not), your penance counter will be set to 50 (quite high!), but no immediate negative events will happen. Possible punishments include:
*20%: Temporary decrease in Intelligence by up to 20%
*30%: Confusion for 1d10+2 turns
*20%: A random divination miscast effect
*20%: All MP drained
*10%: Reduction of the remaining duration of all magic enchantments affecting you to 0 or 10 auts (11 for Flight). This is identical to the effects of a potion of cancellation.

Every time you cast a spell, there's a 5% chance that the failure rate will be increased by a percentage equal to your current penance. This is in addition to normal punishments, and will not reduce your penance.

Strategy
Sif Muna is the default "magic god", favored by characters who want to pursue that path without focusing on the destructive (Vehumet) or necromantic (Kikubaaqudgha) sides of magic. Instead, Sif Muna is much more versatile. Her protection from miscasts covers more magical realms than Kiku's protection, and her spell book gifts are weighted to contain spells you don't already have, allowing you to eventually gain access to every spell in the game. The Channel Energy and Selective Amnesia abilities also come early, and are very useful for any caster.

The main draw of following Sif Muna, aside from free spellbooks, is Channel Energy. It has a fairly good success rate even when you have just acquired it, and at 12 invocations (a fairly modest investment at mid game) it'll restore you d5 MP per use. Against single foes, you can Blink for a couple of free turns to channel. For a character with some means of delaying opponents (conjured flames, meph clouds, summoned monsters, Leda's Liquefaction, hexes), you can use the extra turns for mana restoration before resuming fire. (Just beware the food cost, semi-seriously; keep some quick snacks on hand, or chow before a big fight)

Channel Energy is of particular interest to undead players who don't have a food clock (Mummies, bloodless Vampires, casters in lich form). For them, it's essentially free MP. This is also true for other races with versatile diets, such as kobolds, ghouls, or anyone with an amulet of the gourmand.

If you find an Amulet of faith in the early game, you should consider wearing it, as it will allow you to receive spellbook gifts much sooner and much faster, and once you have the spells you need, the loss of 1/3d of your piety won't hurt a bit.

Tips & Tricks
When Sif Muna's altar is missing from the Ecumenical Temple, keep a look out for wide hallways with blue floor tiles; when Sif's altar is not in Temple, it often has such a hallway preceding the altar proper. Regardless, like other altars, it is guaranteed to appear at least once between floors 1-9 of the main dungeon.

History
Prior to 0.15, Sif Muna's wrath was able to force you to forget a spell.

Go ahead, make changes!
I have created this walk-through with the idea to provide a start-to-end guide for a first time caster-victory. Once version 0.16 is official, I intend to put a link on the strategic guides page.

Since I am not an English mother-tongue speaker, and also because I may have gotten some things wrong, and even may have given bad advice, I'd appreciate if others are not bashful about improving this guide in any possible way. At least let me know, here on this page, how this guide could be improved, but you are all welcome to do edits yourself. Majang (talk) 07:47, 7 February 2015 (CET)

You're awesome!
I would like to thank you for making this amazingly detailed and complete walkthrough, you are single-handedly responsible for my first 3-rune victory and I finally learnt how to manage my skills well enough to build a decent caster, which I never did before. I also borrowed some advice from your other gargoyle walkthrough, but most of the credit goes to this one. You've done some amazing work and I wanted you to know it.--Fingolfin (talk) 11:03, 18 April 2015 (CEST)
:Thanks, I'm glad to hear it works for others, too. Majang (talk) 21:06, 25 April 2015 (CEST)

Majin-Bo
While following this walkthrough I found the +6 Majin-Bo {vamp, Archmagi, MP+6 Int+6} around D:10, rught before Lair. Of course I love it, but the HP cost is really scary, especially considering the Gargoyle's low HP.. So my question (to anyone who might read this) : should I use it? Until when? In terms of firepower it is clearly superior to a staff of earth or fire, since its spellpower bonus is universal, and the huge Int boost... And it also holds its ground as a melee weapon... Decisions, decisions... -- Fingolfin (talk) 13:45, 5 December 2015 (CET)
:Many special items (randart and unrandart) have awesome characteristics, paired with really undesirable drawbacks. This is one of them, and personally, I keep my hands off vampiric weapons. The main reason for this is the hunger of cost wielding them, which means you are really tied to this. I have not tried the Majin-Bo, and its HP penalty for casting. But it sounds scary enough to me that I would not use it. Majang (talk) 18:33, 5 December 2015 (CET)
::Thanks for the quick answer! Well abandoning the Majin-Bo was probably the best thing to do, but it still didn't save my poor gargoyle... Oh well I'll just start again ! -- Fingolfin (talk) 22:11, 7 December 2015 (CET)

Amulet of Faith
Correct me If I'm wrong, but it seems that an amulet of faith would be really good on this character. You get to max piety really fast, meaning that you get your top-tier destructive spells. When you remove it, you don't lose much because he doesn't take back the spells and you keep your range extension. Also, if you don't have enough levels for bolt of magma or Iron shot, you can remove it to buy more time.
:I know I put it on if I find it very early on, because it will help skip all the crap spells, but otherwise I don't think it's much good (but that's just my opinion) However since this walkthrough is intended for beginners, I think it's better to leave the advice as is since amulets of faith are risky : they take up an essential slot that could have been used for an amulet of magic/health regen or shielding which are much better choices IMO -- Fingolfin (talk) 09:43, 20 June 2016 (CEST)
Fingolfinhttp://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=User:Fingolfin&diff=42387User:Fingolfin2016-06-16T09:05:51Z
Fingolfin: /* Unrands I found */ + warlock mirror

:I think I know what this means. So for worker ant, You can get it at level 0, and it has a score of 40, meaning that for every generated insect, there is a (score)/(total score) chance of it being a worker ant. Because it says FALL, that means that the chance falls from 0 evocations to 13.
Peak probably means that it peaks in the middle of the 2 skills and goes up/down linearly until it hits the peak.

Rise on the ghost moth probably means that the chance starts at 21 and then goes up to a peak of 18.
Not sure what Semi is, someone should look into that.

Also the Flat Mons_0 at the end should have no impact and is probably there as a placeholder if they wanted to add a new insect.

Hope this helps!
Strategy
Ukayaw provides some very strong abilities that require you to stay in a fight for longer. While it they can be used against a single opponent, they truly shine when engaging multiple opponents, thus considerably increasing the risk.

Ukayaw's fast piety gain can be further increased by wearing amulet of faith. The playstyle fits very well with the cleaving attacks of various axes and, for entirely different reason, with stabber characters. In the first case, cleaving accelerates the piety gain by hitting multiple opponents. The latter benefits from irresistible confusion, pain bond to apply stabbing damage to multiple monsters at once and then finally Grand Finale allows them to deal with highly-threatening enemies without being resisted, evaded or mitigated by AC and affects even the most threatening of enemies like pandemonium lords, rune guardians in Hell or orbs of fire.
As a tengu you have two auxiliary attacks (beak and talons). So you should eventually train Unarmed Combat. Does it really make sense to put Xp into this slot? And to what extent? :I forget which version it was that made the switch, but from at least 0.12 onward Unarmed Combat only improves the performance of your unarmed punches. Beak and talon attacks are unaffected. If her inherent Deflect Missiles were of any help, I wouldn't be hitting her in the first place (albeit, I don't think it could have any effect; SF is not a missile.)
Followers of Gozag do not earn piety; the only way to impress this god is by amassing a fortune, and worshippers may request as much assistance as they can afford. Fortunately, Gozag's worshippers are said to have the touch of gold.

For Gozag, both flesh and food are inferior to wealth, and therefore all corpses are turned into gold piles. These piles of gold may briefly distract nearby monsters. Stalwarts can order immediate help in the form of potions, with prices dictated by the Greedy. Particularly well-off adherents may attract shopkeepers into the dungeon, and even bribe entire branches of the dungeon. Gozag will also duplicate any one non-artifact item for a servant.

Gozag likes it when you collect gold.}}

Racial Restrictions
Demigods may not worship Gozag Ym Sagoz or any other deity.

Additional Restrictions
Gozag requires a service fee for joining; this starts at 50 gold and rises with the amount of gold generated in the game:
Service fee = 50 + (Generated gold - Generated gold/log10(Generated gold-10))/2

Characters without enough gold receive the message, "Gozag does not accept service from beggars like you!"

Monks who have not yet chosen a god are exempt from this fee.

Appreciates/Deprecates
Gozag Ym Sagoz is a reasonable businessgod, and does not allow personal feelings to affect its behavior one way or another. All interactions with Gozag Ym Sagoz revolve purely around gold. This also means that amulets of faith have no effect, since Gozag doesn't care about piety. The Forlorn mutation also have no effect.

Given Abilities
As Gozag Ym Sagoz has no piety system, all of its granted abilities are available upon joining. Players are notified when they have gathered enough gold to use the next given ability.

*Golden touch: Corpses left by defeated enemies turn into piles of gold (the amount of gold varies; bigger, stronger monsters tend to generate more). These gold piles have a temporary 1-tile aura which may distract nearby creatures, occasionally making them skip a turn. (Passive)

*Detect Gold and shops: You map the location of gold on the floor in a medium area around you and map the location of shops you have funded on your current dungeon level. (Passive)

*Potion Petition: Purchase one set of potion effects. You immediately get the effects of one of three sets of potions, each containing 1-6 random, different potions. Sets containing more and/or better potions are more expensive to purchase. Once you activate the ability, you must choose and pay for one of the sets. The first use of Potion Petition is free.

*Call Merchant: Fund a merchant to set up a new shop somewhere near to areas of the dungeon you have explored. You choose one out of four different Merchants with different shop types, one of which is a food shop (Mummies and vampires are not offered the food shop, thus receive only three choices). The first use of Call Merchant costs at most 800 gold for the best shop, increasing by 200 gold per use (though most shops are actually much cheaper). Chosen shops place only in unexplored levels of the Dungeon, Depths, and the Vaults, or at your feet if all the unexplored levels in those three branches already have called merchants.

*Bribe Branch: Send money to the humanoid and demonic inhabitants of a branch to turn them temporarily neutral or incite them to join you. Uniques and all other enemy types are unaffected. (Costs 3000 Gold)
**You must be in the branch to use this ability. Adds 3000 gold to this branch's bribe fund. Monsters have a chance based on their HD (stronger monsters have a higher chance) to either become peaceful (for some gold from the bribe fund) or become your permanent allies (for more gold from the fund). The chance is rolled when they first notice you.
**Allied monsters will take from the fund when fighting, but not over time.
**Attacking one of these pacified monsters will result in turning any pacified monster in sight hostile.
** This power can be used on the Orcish Mines (affects orcs), Elven Halls (elves), Vaults (humans), Iron City of Dis (demons), Gehenna (demons), Cocytus (demons), Tartarus (demons), and Realm of Zot (draconians).
** This power can be incredibly useful in branches with dangerous enemies. Having a few Orbs of Fire or Ancient Liches on your side can make a big difference.

Punishments
Upon leaving Gozag Ym Sagoz, any funded stores close, as they are unable to pay their debts without your funds. Any bribed monsters will turn hostile. In addition:
*Petition for your drink to fail: When quaffing potions, there is a high chance that you will lose a turn (but not the potion).
*Turn to gold: When buying from shops, there is a chance your purchase will turn into 1 piece of gold.
*Incite: Hastes an enemy.
*Claim gold: Gozag claims about 10% of any gold you pick up (much like Zin).

Strategy
Characters that rely heavily on corpses, such as Necromancers, ghouls, vampires, and trolls, should think twice before choosing to follow Gozag, as you'll be turning everything you kill into gold. You also will have a harder time getting dragon armour, since the dragons will leave no corpses to butcher.

Gozag is an appealing choice for spriggans; as herbivores, they have less use for corpses than most species (barring Necromancy or blood sacrifice-accepting gods), and more gold means more access to shop equipment, Gozag's abilities, and (if hunger actually becomes an issue) edible food items.
Reflection is a curious ego that can be found on all types of shields. It provides no additional defensive properties, but reflects all successfully blocked projectiles, both physical and magical, back in the direction they originated. Be aware that only some spells can be blocked (for example, it can prove devastating against casters with Orb of Destruction or Lehudib's Crystal Spear, but it serves no purpose against Fireball or Airstrike). Also, its reliability is dependent on your actual skill with shields, and dodged attacks will not be reflected.

The reflection ego is most commonly found on the shield of reflection often worn by the unique fighter Donald.

Tips & Tricks
*The reflected attack can miss and may strike unintended targets.

*This ego is nowhere near as powerful as it is in some other games, most notably NetHack. Your chance of blocking an attack is not increased by wearing a shield of reflection, and there are still many types of attacks that cannot be blocked at all. In general, a shield with any resistance you may be lacking is preferable to a reflection-branded shield, though one might prefer it over a protection-branded shield, especially if you know you'll be facing opponents with powerful, blockable ranged abilities soon (Roxanne, Dispater, etc.).

*Note that you can also reflect rolling boulder beetles.

History
Until version ?? the game treated the reflected attack as an attack initiated by the player himself. If you followed a god who prohibited certain attacks, you would invoke penance for these unintentional reflected attacks.
Demonspawn can be a moderately difficult race to play. They have slightly bad aptitudes and slow leveling, but are compensated for with the random demonspawn mutations they will inevitably acquire. These mutations can vary from irritating, to interesting, to gamechanging. See the demonspawn mutation page if you want to figure out the ways your character can develop.

Demonspawn are demonic and evil. That means they can't worship the good gods, and are vulnerable to holiness (they'll be damaged by a scroll of holy word, and take greatly amplified damage from cleansing flames and holy wrath weapons). They can't wield weapons of holy wrath, like other evil creatures, and take greatly increased damage from them.

Demonspawn

Tips and Tricks
Some combinations of demonspawn mutations have great synergy with some character types.

*Casters with knowledge of freezing cloud will greatly enjoy having icemail; dropping a cloud around you will cancel out most fire based spells.
*Powered by Pain and Mana Font can give you fantastic mana regeneration and durability.
*Nightstalker is great for stabbers and melee based characters, but could be detrimental to spell focused characters who rely on long ranged spells. Antenna can be useful to stabbers too; the detection will occur even against objects and foes out of your reduced line of sight. Ignite Blood may or may not be helpful; stabbing produces ludicrous amounts of it, but you may wake up foes by lighting them on fire.
*Repulsion field is nice for Troglodytes, since it is very difficult to obtain otherwise.

History
The Demonspawn mutation system was substantially overhauled in 0.7. Prior to that version, they mutated in a generally more random fashion: mutations were only grouped into low power and high power, and Demonspawn would receive six total mutations (two low, four high power). The mutation lists, which can be found on this page, were extremely varied. For instance, "high power" mutations could be absolutely mediocre things such as 1d3 levels of negative energy resistance, or they could be potentially game breaking things such as fast movement or complete torment immunity. In addition, Demonspawn mutations had some dependence on a character's skills and deity. While the old Demonspawn may have had much more powerful mutations available to them, the lack of any coherence to the mutations, or any guarantee of getting useful ones, made them in general a much more difficult species under the old system.

Since the overhaul, Demonspawn have continued to evolve: in 0.8, they stopped receiving breath attack mutations. Later versions, particularly 0.10, have added a number of new mutations and rebalanced others.

Prior to 0.14, Demonspawn dealt more damage than normal while wielding demonic weapons (demon tridents, demon whips, and demon blades).

Perhaps unfortunately, their strong ties to earth have left them completely impervious to being teleported or hasted; Formicids are tied to the Earth with a complete sense of stasis. While this is seemingly a bad effect for a dungeon adventurer, stasis has the beneficial effect of preventing many types of nasty hexes and maledictions.

With the ability to lift ten times their own weight, the Formicids have strength rivaling that of ogres. This, along with the fact that they have four arms, allows Formicid warriors to carry both a shield and a two-handed weapon at the same time.
Their multiple limbs also allow them to use shields with the same reduced penalties as large races.
*Formicids can dig through walls as an innate ability. First, they have to extend their mandibles, and then move into a rock wall or iron grate to start making the tunnel. Digging takes 2+movement delay auts per square, makes some noise, and has a hefty food cost.
*Formicids can create a shaft under themselves as an innate ability, allowing them to escape downwards, but at the cost of making a great deal of noise. (This ability does not function on the last level of a branch, nor in the Abyss, Hell, Pandemonium, or Ziggurats.)
*Formicids have permanent stasis, rendering them unable to take advantage of translocative effects, Haste, Finesse, and berserk, but also granting immunity to paralysis and slowing (but not petrification).
Difficulty of Play
Hard

Formicid

Strategy
Formicids are blessed and cursed with some of the most dramatic species mutations in Crawl, resulting in a very unique play experience. Their ability to wield 2-handed weapons and shields simultaneously, coupled with their high Armour skill aptitude and access to almost all armour, allows them to deal stupendous amounts of damage without sacrificing anything from their defenses. Although they still can't wield giant clubs, wielding any 2-handed weapon in one hand is still a massive advantage, making a formicid with end-game quality equipment far deadlier than most.

Unfortunately, they also come with one of the heaviest handicaps of any species, making it difficult to survive dangerous encounters that others can simply bail on. While permanent stasis does protect you from slow and paralysis effects, it also disables a wide variety of incredibly useful panic buttons; teleports and blinks are the most obvious, but all sources of haste and berserking are also rendered useless, as well as Okawaru's Finesse. Where some characters can simply buff up and plow their way through dangerous foes or crowds of attackers, disappearing if a fight starts looking unwinnable, a formicid must play more cautiously.

Take advantage of the resources formicids have at their disposal. Your innate Dig ability allows you to create choke points, making it much safer to fight large bands of enemies. As it is fairly slow to use, you may want to create tunnels in advance, near areas where there are multiple enemies. Assuming you aren't at the bottom floor of a branch, your Shaft ability is a guaranteed escape from any fight, but consider using it before you're at the brink of death; it takes a few turns to kick in, and it's much easier to survive on an unexplored, dangerous floor when you're relatively unscathed. Spells that disable enemies (Slow, Petrify, Cause Fear, and other Hexes) are excellent for making getaways. While formicids can't blink normally, Dithmenos' Shadow Step provides an effect similar to Controlled Blink, although it requires a sleeping (or otherwise stationary) target. Likewise, Passage of Golubria and Lugonu's Bend Space ability cause space to bend, not you, and thus still function as normal for you. Swiftness still functions correctly for you, so if you need a quick (but not lengthy) escape, it may be your best option

Your antennae and high Stealth aptitude allow you to see large bands and dangerous opponents before engaging them, making it much easier for you to lure individuals away from a group or simply avoid the fight entirely. When pursued by an enemy you can't outrun or hex, luring it over a teleport trap is a great way to lose it, so keep an eye out for those. Be careful not to enter the trap yourself though, as it will vanish in spite of your stasis. Most importantly, don't forget that simply walking away before an impossible fight begins is sometimes the best option you've got. This makes boots of running particularly desirable; it is one of the only methods a formicid has of outrunning opponents.

When it comes to god selection for a more melee-oriented fomicid character, Trog and Okawaru may seem like poor choices due to formicids' stasis, but neither should be viewed as entirely out of the question. While Trog's berserk ability will not function, the remainder of his later, more powerful invocations will still function normally. Okawaru's Heroism will function normally, but Finesse is unavailable, meaning you have no need to divert the extra experience points into Invocations to make the success rate of Finesse manageable. Furthermore, you will always be able to use whatever gifts they give you regardless or whether you are using a shield.

Another god you might consider is Lugonu, whose Bend Space ability will allow you to blink despite your stasis.
Prior to 0.15, formicids could throw large rocks.

Formicids were added in 0.14.

During much of their development, formicids were known as dwants (or dwarf-ants). They also had less HP but leveled even faster than humans. In addition, they were particularly vulnerable to poison.
{{flavour|Kobolds are small, ugly creatures with few redeeming features. They are not the sort of people you would want to spend much time with, unless you happened to be a Kobold yourself.
They tend to be stronger and less agile than Halflings, and are slightly more talented at using most types of magic, particularly necromancy. They are competent in combat, especially with short blades, maces or crossbows, and are also very adept at using magical devices.
Kobolds are a straightforward race to play because of their excellent aptitudes in many skills and their size bonus to EV. They have good magic aptitudes overall and advance quickly in experience, and they can eat meat (including chunks) at any time, not just when hungry. This makes eating less of a hassle, which is usually just a convenience, although it can be leveraged to strong effect with certain abilities, such as Sif Muna's channeling or repeatable berserking, as offered by Trog or via an evocable source of berserk (e.g., amulet of rage). Their excellent aptitude for evocations points to Nemelex.

Starting Skills and Equipment
Vine Stalkers receive the skills and equipment listed for their background.

Difficulty of Play
Easy

In spite of their reduced HP and inability to heal from potions or wands, the Vine Stalker's inherent spirit shield and excellent regeneration keeps them fairly durable for much of the mid- to late-game. Their high Stealth aptitude makes them formidable stabbers and, while their Intelligence is mediocre, their all-around average Magic aptitudes allow for a versatile hybrid build.
Vine Stalker

Strategy
Vine stalkers are a surprisingly durable species. In spite of their spriggan-sized HP pools and unimpressive defensive skill aptitudes, their innate spirit shield intrinsic means that a portion of all incoming damage is redirected to their MP; the larger the character's MP pool, the more damage will be redirected to it. On top of that, they have better HP regeneration than trolls, and each time they bite in melee, there's a chance that they'll recover a chunk of MP as well. Coupled with their full access to all forms of armour, this gives them an excellent capacity both to avoid serious injury and to recover from it after the fact. Just be ready for the appearance of eyes of draining, ghost moths, or other threats to your MP - these threats will chew through your supernatural defenses with lightning speed, leaving you significantly less hardy than normal.

In spite of their excellent regeneration, they are even less capable of immediate healing than mummies, unable to benefit from potions of heal wounds or wands of heal wounds, and only receiving the status effect recovery aspect of potions of curing. This weakness is felt most powerfully in the early game, when a potion of heal wounds can completely restore your HP, but is still a significant penalty in the late game. Even so, their vastly enhanced regen is an excellent replacement, and all other sources of healing still function as normal.

Apart from a knack for Stealth and a general weakness in defensive skills, vine stalkers have no real aptitude issues, and can easily be built for any role, excelling perhaps as sneaky stabbers.
Their mediocre intelligence makes them less than optimal for dedicated casters; they do make good Transmuters, though, as Blade Hands lets them keep their bonus bite attack and their only non-negative combat skill is Unarmed Combat.

I've been coolecting piety for Okawaru up to 5stars. Somehow the sixth star won't happen. Well, I play a XL13 caster, don't waste much piety on heroism /finess if not necessary. And I kill often enough. But it seems to me that the (miserable quality) god gifts prevent the rise of piety because all the time the gift timeouts have to be served in priority. Is this reasoning the correct description of the 0.14a features working? Or did I overlook something (e.g. only high HD monsters count)? Please share your wisdom on these details and speak out. -- Bwijn (talk) 19:12, 17 December 2013 (CET)

:The god gifts do eat a lot of the piety you receive after a certain point, yes. Even so, it is possible to eventually get the last star; it just doesn't do anything. --MoogleDan (talk) 20:46, 17 December 2013 (CET)

::Yes, I know it doesn't do anything. But it is so irritating if you don't advance visibly. In tournament it was a banner mission to achieve highest piety level. In normal games it just provides a buffer for paying attention to not lose the 5star condition (Okawaru finesse). (BTW many Oka gifts are just a nuisance e.g. a +3/+0 cutlass of distortion.) -- Bwijn (talk) 22:26, 17 December 2013 (CET)

:"And I kill often enough."
:
: That's the problem. You aren't killing often enough. Try to spend less MP in each fight, train melee skills, and recover your MP while exploring. Or even better, ignore that last star. --CommanderC (talk) 22:39, 17 December 2013 (CET)

::Thanks a lot. This is a valuable hint: "Try to spend less MP in each fight". So Oka is complementary to Sif who rewards increasing spell school skills. The rise of weapon skills makes a difference you say. Could be the missing link. -- Bwijn (talk) 22:49, 17 December 2013 (CET)

Finesse and speed weapons
Does Okawaru's finesse have any effect if the player is already using a speed-brand weapon with minimum delay? Majang (talk) 13:54, 6 August 2014 (CEST)
:Yes, but not beyond the game's hard limit of 0.2. Finesse on a well-enchanted giant spiked club of speed is a wonder to behold. Finesse on a quick blade? Not so much, but still nice. The attack speed article should show you exactly how it all calculates out. --MoogleDan (talk) 14:24, 6 August 2014 (CEST)

Finesse and Heroism duration
Do the effects duration depend on the skill in Evocations? Or, equivalently, does it make sense to keep training Evocations once the Failure rate drops to 0-1% ? --Riffraff (talk) 08:39, 10 March 2016 (CET)

:Since Evocations don't have anything to do with god-given abilities, I'm going to assume you meant Invocations? Yes it has an impact on duration. If my code reading is correct (which is a dubious hypothesis), then for both these abilities, you have :
duration = 10 + (a random number ranging from 0 to (Invocations level * 6))
If you want to check for yourself, here's the code describing what happens when you use Finesse : source code. -- Fingolfin (talk) 23:23, 10 March 2016 (CET)
Fingolfinhttp://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=Troll_leather_armour&diff=41277Troll leather armour2016-03-08T21:40:20Z
Fingolfin: /* Desirability */ ring of regen --> amulet of regen

Troll leather armour is one of the lightest armours in the game, providing slightly more defense than leather armour with no additional encumbrance rating. It also provides a +40 bonus to the wearer's regeneration rate, though your hunger rate is increased to 1.5Ć normal for as long as you are not at max HP. This regeneration bonus does not apply to trolls, deep dwarves, or bloodless vampires, but does affect mummies in spite of their lack of a hunger clock.

This armour is rare, but you can create your own by using a scroll of enchant armour on a troll hide (which is sometimes produced when you butcher a troll corpse). If the hunger increase doesn't sound worth it to you, consider some of the lighter dragon armours instead.

Note that despite its similarity in name to the less universally wearable leather armour, troll leather armour (and its associated hide) can be worn by any character that can wear body armour, not just small and medium species.

Desirability
Middling. While troll leather armour is better than comparable mundane armours, its AC value is inferior to all of the dragon armours, it provides no resistances, though its regeneration boost is equivalent to that of an amulet of regeneration, potentially freeing up an amulet slot for you. This can be a good item, particularly for characters who have no other way to speed up their healing, or for ogres and trolls who have yet to find a dragon hide and still wish to improve their durability (albeit slightly), and any EV-based character should keep an eye out for a well-enchanted artefact.
Chant Fire Storm is a monsters-only spell which functions much like the spell Fire Storm, blasting an area with heavy, unavoidable, partially irresistible fire damage. However, unlike that spell, it takes a significant amount of time to complete, only activating 30 auts after the caster begins to cast it.
The following monsters can cast Chant Fire Storm:

Useful Info
Trolls are hulking brutes that lumber into melee, tearing apart their opponents with powerful attacks. Although they lack resistances, they regenerate HP quickly and are fairly durable for early monsters. They are most commonly found in the late Dungeon, Orcish Mines and the Vaults. More powerful trolls will harass you throughout most of the game.

Tips & Tricks
*Use caution when you first encounter trolls; low-level melee fighters may not be able to survive long enough in melee to land a killing blow, and trollish regeneration makes it so they always win wars of attrition. Use wands or some other form of ranged attack to soften them up before engaging.
*Mephitic Cloud can render them fit for nuking from afar, but stabbing still has risks. They may still land a hit or two in melee, so don't move in for the kill unless you've got full health.
*Butchering a troll corpse sometimes produces a troll hide. You can turn this into a superior troll leather armour by using a scroll of enchant armour on it. This provides you with slightly better defense than leather armour and a source of health regeneration.
*If you insist on taking them in melee, a good venom-branded weapon will effectively counter their regeneration.

Statues can be found all throughout the Dungeon. Most of them are harmless, but some contain dangerous traps or actively try to kill you. While each kind of statue behaves in a unique way, they are most easily divided into inanimate statues (which are treated like dungeon features) and animated statue monsters (which aggressively attack you and can be destroyed). Whether animate or not, all statues are completely immobile, and if a statue is capable of attacking you, the game will auto-exclude all tiles in their LOS to keep you from accidentally wandering into danger.

All statues behave much like transparent walls, being a barrier to fire but not visibility; unlike transparent walls, they are not a barrier to reaching or smite-targeted attacks. They are not affected by Dig or a wand of digging, but may be susceptible to disintegration. Hostile statues do not regenerate HP, so even if you are forced to retreat, you may come back and try to destroy it after you've healed.

Inanimate Statues
Inanimate statues, while unaffected by physical attack, are susceptible to disintegration, Orb of Destruction, Lee's Rapid Deconstruction, and Shatter.
*Granite statues come in a variety of shapes, often resembling dangerous monsters, but pose no risk; at worst they may prevent you from reaching a shop or pile of treasure.

*Scorch marked granite statues are just like granite statues, except that they are found in areas where flame clouds sporadically appear. They do not actually cause these clouds, so while you can destroy them, doing so accomplishes nothing toward making the area safer.
* Gravestones are generally found in special vaults or portal levels (like Zonguldrok's Shrine). If they show up in the main dungeon, it's a sure sign that the undead are wandering the level.

*Orcish idols are like granite statues dedicated to the orc god Beogh.

*Sarcophagi can be found in The Tomb, The Crypt, and certain special levels. Normally, they behave like granite statues. Sealed sarcophagi, however, can occasionally contain monsters.
An ancient sarcophagus. It appears to be empty.
*Elephant-shaped statues are inanimate lumps of stone occasionally found in the temple of Lair:8. They do nothing until you kill the anaconda in the back of the temple, at which point several of them will come to life and attack you as dire elephants. Be sure to close doors behind you as you explore; this will allow you to only face a few of them at a time.
This worn granite statue depicts an elephant standing guard.
*Iron statues are found only in the Iron City of Dis and are completely indestructible.
This statue has no mouth. Creepy!

Monster Statues
Hostile statues are rare, and most often are found as part of a vault. Most animate statues have elemental resistance or immunity. Certain dangerous statues are susceptible to a wand of disintegration, but most of them are unaffected. All can be taken down by physical attacks or spells: eg, Lee's Rapid Deconstruction, Shatter, Orb of Destruction.

Pillar of salt- The consecrated remains of an unfortunate demon or undead that suffered the wrath of Zin.

Block of ice- All that's left of a hapless creature that got in the way of a Glaciate spell.

Training dummy- A harmless, fragile statue found only in the Tutorial and a few vaults.

Charred statue- A statue that guards an altar to Vehumet. Casts Throw Flame.

Hell is a forbidding domain crawling with demonic entities of all shapes and sizes. It is actually comprised of five separate branches: The Vestibule of Hell and its four subbranches. From the main dungeon, all Hell portals lead to the Vestibule; it is from there that one ventures into Hell's branches.

The Vestibule of Hell
You'll find multiple portals to the Vestibule in the Depths (though one possible Lair:8 layout contains one behind a temple filled with demons, as well as rarely on the bottom of the Orcish Mines). The Vestibule's most famous denizen is Geryon, a cowardly three-headed demon, with whom you'll also find flocks of demons and hell knights. The unique curse skull Murray will also be there 25% of the time.

The Vestibule is generally safe to clear if you've finished exploring the Dungeon and are hardy enough to have cleared the Elven Halls and the Vaults (see the article for further strategy tips). Once the Vestibule has been cleared, it can serve as a stash location. Monsters can respawn hereājust at a low rate.

Hell's branches
It is not necessary to kill Geryon to enter the branches of Hell, but given the endless minions that he will spawn when using his horn, it is highly advisable. Also, if you can't kill Geryon, you probably shouldn't enter any of the hells anyway.

There are four branches accessible from the Vestibule of Hell:
* Gehenna, the fire branch, contains the obsidian rune of Zot.
* Cocytus, the cold branch, contains the icy rune of Zot.
* Tartarus, the undead branch, contains the bone rune of Zot.
* The Iron City of Dis, the iron branch, contains the iron rune of Zot.

Each branch of Hell is 7 levels deep. The final level of each houses a unique, named demon protecting several treasure vaults, a rune of Zot, and in some cases an unrandart weapon. A unique feature of the Hell branches is that there are no stairs leading upwards; all exits from a given floor are stairways leading farther down or portals leading directly back to the Vestibule. While this means that you can't make use of stair dancing like you could in other areas, it makes escape considerably easier. Should you take a nasty beating or realize you're underprepared, simply take a portal back to the Vestibule; once you've recovered, you can resume exploration from the top of the branch. You'll retain the maps of the levels you've made so far, making it easier to find your way back down.

Besides the vaults on the final level, items and food in Hell are almost nonexistent, generally only acquired if dropped by a slain monster (e.g. a potion of blood from a vampire or weapons from red devils or skeletal warriors). For the most part, the only thing you'll find to eat will be the occasional pack of hell hounds or hell hogs, and those mostly appear in Gehenna. This gives you yet another reason to move through the Hells as quickly as possible.

Teleport control is disabled on the last level of each branch until their respective runes are acquired.

Hell's Mystical Force
In Hell's branches (but not the Vestibule), resting is difficult. Every 20 turns, there is a chance that a "mystical force" may lash out at you. This usually just selects a random miscast, but may also summon demons or level appropriate monsters. Potential effects include:

*Random miscast effects:
**Slowing you for a few turns
**Confusing you for a few turns
**Making you berserk for a few turns
**1-7 stat drain
**Rotting
**Opening a Malign Gateway to summon an eldritch tentacle.
**Blasting you with a branch-specific attack (e.g. clouds of freezing vapour in Cocytus, sticky flame in Gehenna)
**Blasting you with magical energy -- irresistible damage
**And assorted other nasty things
*Spawning demons or other monsters around you, up to and including fiends. These are not summons: they cannot be abjured and are worth experience.

Arguably, the first two miscast effects are the most dangerous; being slowed or confused while surrounded by freshly summoned demons (or when fighting one of the demon lords on the last level) can be deadly. However, over a period of time, stat drain can become quite onerous, particularly if the same stat is drained repeatedly.

Recommendations
The safest strategy of acquiring Hell's runes is to ignore as many monsters as possible and dive to the next level. Every upward staircase in Hell's branches returns you straight to the Vestibule anyway, so you don't even have to face the monsters twice. Fighting with monsters to get experience may be tempting, but in Hell these seeming benefits are often negated by the actions of the mystical force. It's all fun and games until you're helplessly paralyzed or suffer two successive -7 hits on one of your stats.

If you do plan on fighting in Hell - a pastime for powerful characters only! - make sure you have high resistances to counteract each branch's element: rF+++ for Gehenna, rC+++ for Cocytus, rN+++ for Tartarus, and a little bit of everything for Dis. In addition, you'll want a way to sustain or restore abilities, a means of flight, Abjuration or a means of blinking if you get surrounded by summoned demons, and plenty of food (unless you're in lichform or are a mummy/bloodless vampire). Weapons with the holy wrath brand are effective against all manners of demons and undead too. Also, at high piety, Zin will frequently block the effects of Hell's mystical force, making his worshipers particularly well-suited to plumbing Hell's depths.

History
Prior to 0.14, players needed to evoke Geryon's horn to access the branches of Hell.

Prior to 0.9, a frequent Hell effect was banishment. This was replaced with Malign Gateway, mostly to reduce annoyance to the player.
Useful Info
Cherubim are flying holy beings with a 6-tile halo aura. Although less dangerous than angels or daevas, they tend to wield decent blessed flaming long blades and fire longbows at you (often with branded ammunition). They are extremely rare, only appearing in holy-themed Pandemonium and Ziggurat floors, as well as the occasional Dungeon good god vault.
Tips & Tricks
*Worshipping a good god (Zin, the Shining One, or Elyvilon) may cause it to calm down and become neutral towards you.
*The "cherub" hit type is unique to cherubim and cosmetic only. It is simply randomized to reflect the possible attacks from each of the four heads: hit, bite, peck, or gore.
*Like orc knights, cherubim have a Battlecry ability that allows them to empower monsters around them, causing these allies to deal +30% damage.
Fingolfinhttp://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=User:Fingolfin&diff=40196User:Fingolfin2016-01-12T13:16:48Z
Fingolfin: /* Unrands I found */ + dark maul

the +3 crown of Eternal Torment

Desirability
The crown of Eternal Torment is an extremely situational piece of equipment, granting rN+++ and torment immunity in exchange for a sizable portion of your maximum health. Admittedly, immunity to torment makes certain encounters significantly less terrifying, but that's still a lot of lost durability. Having 4/5 normal health means that all other hostile attacks are effectively dealing 125% more damage than normal, and slows your regeneration rate by a significant chunk. The item may be useful for taking on the Tomb and Tartarus, but almost any other branch of the game will be decidedly deadlier if you choose to wear it; most branches don't have sources of torment to begin with, and several of those that do have plenty of other devastating threats, such as hellfire. Use this artefact at your own risk, and make sure to keep some scrolls of remove curse on hand so you can remove it when you decide to wear a less dangerous piece of equipment.

Oh, and it has see invisible. That's nice.

History
The crown of Eternal Torment was briefly considered for 0.17 but was ultimately removed before release.

The ring of teleportation induces teleportitis in its wearer so long as it is worn. It can also be evoked to deliberately cause teleportation, producing the same effect as a scroll of teleportation on success. It is usually generated cursed.

The chance to successfully evoke the teleportation ability is affected by Evocations. The random teleports this ring afflicts you with occur without warning every so often and are unaffected by your skills, but can be prevented by stasis. Formicids, having natural stasis, receive no benefit or penalty from rings of teleportation, and should discard them.

The chance of successfully evoking this ring rises with your Evocations skill:

Strategy
Rings of teleportation are the only renewable source of teleport in the game: thus, it is often worth keeping one around. While their high failure chance, occupation of a ring slot, and side effect of teleportitis makes them less than ideal for emergencies, they are useful for characters with Control Teleport and a scroll of magic mapping for jumping to new areas, accessing heavily guarded vaults, or ninja-ing runes. Even with minimal Evocations training, trying repeatedly in a safe location until you succeed is an option with no serious downside. Just don't rely on them as an emergency escape option if you haven't trained the skill at all.

Characters stuck with a cursed ring of teleportation on their finger may wish to wear an amulet of stasis just to avoid getting themselves randomly launched into a terribly dangerous situation. Just remember to take the amulet off quickly if you find yourself in need of a scroll of blinking to get yourself to safety.

Rings of teleportation are one of the most useful items to bring to The Abyss, since teleporting away from fights is a great escape method (it will always take you to another region of the Abyss). Also, if you keep evoking it, you can cover a lot of ground and find an exit very quickly.
Followers of Sif Muna can channel magical energy when they need it the most, and they gain a power to forget any spell at will, so as to learn new ones. *Training your magic skills. Piety 160+:
:* Spell books. Each spell book is either an ordinary spell book (24%), a Theme artifact spell book (73%) or a Level artifact spell book (2%).

Ordinary spell books are the kind you find lying around the dungeon, and are weighted toward ones with spells you don't have in your other spell books. Theme artifact spell books will contain several spells on a given theme (not necessarily a magic school). Level artifact spell books will contain several spells with a given level (up to your experience level). A high Spellcasting skill will grant better artifact spellbooks. Note that Sif Muna will not give you any manuals, the Necronomicon (Kikubaaqudgha's special), a Book of Annihilations, an Akashic Record, or a Grand Grimoire, although it's possible to get some of the spells they contain in artifact spell books.

Sif Muna's gift timeout is between 41 and 59.

Punishments

This page has never had a version tag applied to it, and it's one of the pages I've been least confident about updating (I'm a much bigger fan of Vehumet's style, TBH). I have no idea how out-of-date and inaccurate this page actually is. Can anyone who honestly feels confident about Sif Muna's behavior update this page for 0.14 or 0.15? If you can fill in a History section as well, that'd be even better. Code diving for specific mechanics behavior welcome. --MoogleDan (talk) 21:07, 20 August 2014 (CEST)
:As far as I can tell Sif hasn`t been changed much: the skills (channel, amnesia and miscast protect) and spellbook-gifts are still there for 0.15 as well as not accepting the ignorant. I can`t say anything about the specific numbers, but I didn`t notice any changes in the average amount of MP channeled and when Sif starts to gift books. There wasn't any mention of Sif in the changelogs, so I think Sif is unchanged. --BlueCrake (talk) 13:26, 21 August 2014 (CEST)
::Actually, do a CTRL+F on the change log. She's in there. It says that she no longer inflicts amnesia. I'm not sure if that was suggesting that she no longer allows you to forget spells at will (which would be a weird nerf to add), or that she no longer blasts your memorized spells in her wrath (the phrasing makes this sound more likely, in which case we're doubly screwed because we never even had that listed in her wraths in the first place). I think she's probably mostly the same nerdy bookish library goddess we've always known and loved, but I want specifics, dammit. What's the point of a wiki that can't provide needlessly in-depth calculations??!? --MoogleDan (talk) 13:50, 21 August 2014 (CEST)
Channelling success rate
The channelling success rate this page indicates seemed strange to me, so I went to see the code for myself. I found out the failure chance of this ability is :

failure = 40 - (you.piety / 20) - you.skill(SK_INVOCATIONS, 2);

However, I can't find the definition of the "skill" method so I don't know what the "2" means and it bothers me. If anyone knows about this I would be very grateful. (btw this is in ability.cc) -- Fingolfin (talk) 11:53, 21 December 2015 (CET)
:It's the scale parameter, if it's higher than 1 then progress towards the next skill level matters too (1.5 invo results in 3 here). -- Medar (talk) 12:40, 22 December 2015 (CET)
::Thanks for the answer ! However I'm not sure that I get it, does it mean the formula is
failure = 40 - piety/20 - ceil(Invocations skill)
? -- Fingolfin (talk) 21:50, 22 December 2015 (CET)
:::The return value is skill (including progress toward next level) multiplied by the scale parameter (as an integer). So it should work out to:
failure = 40 - piety/20 - floor(Invocations skill * 2.0)
-- Medar (talk) 10:10, 23 December 2015 (CET)
