It surprised me because I didn't know it was possible and I was rather concerned that it might be there in place of the minotaur and normal exit, but I kept searching and did find the minotaur, loot, and exit. I suppose you could kill the minotaur, grab the loot, then go back to re-find the portal to make a trip to the abyss. If you really want to visit the abyss this early. you know, if you have a death wish.
