A royal jelly is a particularly useful food which provides a whopping 5,000 nutrition, regardless of whether you're a herbivore or a carnivore. It thus provides as much nutrition as a meat ration at a lighter weight.
History
Prior to 0.15, royal jellies also acted as a potion of restore abilities.
