Version 0.30: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Wizardry refers to items and effects that directly reduce your chance of failure when casting spells. These are provided by rings and the demonspawn mutation Big Brain.

A single source of wizardry decreases raw spell failure by x75%, two sources by x66.6%, and three by x50%. This is a multiplicative factor, applied after calculating spell failure from skills, though failure is modified by a further modifier.

Generally, the actual decrease to failure rate will be larger than the raw decrease.[1] However, keep in mind that wizardry is a multiplier. For example, wizardry x1 will bring a spell from 15% -> 10% failure; that's a x67% reduction, but the differences between 15% and 10% failure is quite low in practice.

In addition, Vehumet applies two sources of wizardry (x66.6%) to destructive spells. This bonus stacks with wizardry from other sources.[2]
