The Arbitrary Unit of Mass (AUM for short) is the standard unit of weight in Crawl. It has no real-world equivalent, and item weights are generally assigned according to game balance rather than realism. Each point of Strength increases your carrying capacity by 30 aum.

History

In 0.13, each point of strength will only increase your carrying capacity by 25, but you'll have a base carrying capacity of 100 plus a bonus that varies by species.

Prior to 0.6, each point of strength only gave you 10 aum of carrying capacity.
