The effect (and severity) of the curse mainly depends on the mummy itself, and can include item cursing and all Necromancy miscast effects. Followers of Kikubaaqudgha with enough piety are resistant to these miscasts and curses.

The severity of the curse depends on the HD of the mummy. Followers of Kikubaaqudgha with enough piety are resistant to these curses - half of all curses are negated, and the severity of the remainder are halved.

As many curses only affect the creature that killed the mummy, have an ally strike the final blow if possible. (Note that killing mummys with a Spellforged Servitor will get you a death curse, as well as enslaving a mummy and getting it killed by another monster.)
+
No death curse is applied if a mummy is banished to the Abyss, kills itself while confused, falls down a shaft, or is killed by confused or frenzied enemies or traps. However, allowing an allied or enslaved creature to kill a mummy still results in you suffering the death curse.

Also, no curse is cast if a mummy is banished to the Abyss, kills itself while confused, falls down a shaft, or is killed by giant spores, ball lightning, or traps.
+
Death curses can also be caused by Kikubaaqudgha's wrath (in which case the severity is the player's XL) and the Scythe of Curses (in which case the severity is the melee damage of that strike).

Version 0.25: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Death curses fall on any creature who kills a guardian mummy, mummy priest, royal mummy, or Khufu. This does not apply to killing mummies that have been summoned in any way; only "naturally" occurring mummies have death curses.

The severity of the curse depends on the HD of the mummy. Followers of Kikubaaqudgha with enough piety are resistant to these curses - half of all curses are negated, and the severity of the remainder are halved.

No death curse is applied if a mummy is banished to the Abyss, kills itself while confused, falls down a shaft, or is killed by confused or frenzied enemies or traps. However, allowing an allied or enslaved creature to kill a mummy still results in you suffering the death curse.

Death curses can also be caused by Kikubaaqudgha's wrath (in which case the severity is the player's XL) and the Scythe of Curses (in which case the severity is the melee damage of that strike).
