Version 0.12: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.
This page is about the player species. For the monster, see Demigod (monster).
Demigods are mortals (Humans, Orcs or Elves, for example) with some divine or angelic ancestry, however distant; they can be created by a number of processes, including magical experiments and the time-honoured practice of interplanar miscegenation.

Demigods look more or less like members of their mortal part's species, but have excellent attributes (Str, Int, Dex) and are extremely robust; they can also draw on great supplies of magical energy. On the downside, they advance very slowly in experience, gain skills slightly less quickly than Humans and, due to their status, cannot worship the various gods and powers available to other classes of being.

Innate Abilities

Other than their excellent stats, Demigods have no special abilities.

Preferred Backgrounds

Due to their religious restriction, Demigods are prohibited from becoming Berserkers, Abyssal Knights, Chaos Knights, Death Knights, Priests, or Healers.

Level Bonuses

  • +1 to a random stat increase every even level.
  • 10% more HP than average.
  • 20% more MP than average.
  • +4 magic resistance per level.

Starting Equipment and Skills

Demigods receive the equipment and skills listed for their chosen background.

Difficulty of Play

SimpleIntermediateAdvanced

Demigods can be a difficult species to play, partly because of their lack of special abilities and their mediocre aptitudes across the board, but mostly because of their inability to worship a god. Lacking religion does not impact the early game much, but it makes a huge difference over the life of a character, as many powers and bonuses can be gained through religion. Plus, Demigods advance the slowest in experience levels of any race, requiring 60% more experience than Humans do. On the plus side, Demigods have large HP and mana pools, and have by far the highest base attributes and growths of any race.
