You only start with 30 stones, and you have to make these last until either you reach XL 3, at which point you can memorise [[Stone Arrow]] (which isn't as good as Sandblast, but better than nothing), or you find more stones on the floor. This can be done by using melee attacks versus very weak enemies to attempt to conserve stones, as well as throwing other types of throwing weapon. (Generally throwing your stones is not advised.)

Version 0.21: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.
Earth Elementalists are magicians who have specialised in earth, one of the four types of elemental magic. Earth Magic is a mixed bag, with destructive, defensive and utility spells available.

Earth Elementalists are mages with a preference for Earth Magic.

Preferred Races

Deep Elf, Deep Dwarf, Spriggan, Gargoyle, Demigod, Ghoul and Octopode are the recommended races if you pick an Earth Elementalist Background.

Starting Equipment

Some species may receive different items based on their unique restrictions.

Earth elementalists start with the Sandblast spell memorised.

Starting Skills and Stats

These are adjusted by your species' aptitudes.

Choosing Earth Elementalist adds 7 to your starting Intelligence and 5 to your starting Dexterity.

Strategy

  • Sandblast really shines when used against strong monsters with low AC, such as ogres. The downside to Sandblast is that it requires a stone for every casting, consuming it in the process. You only start with 30 stones, and you have to make these last until either you reach XL 3, at which point you can memorise Stone Arrow, or you find more stones on the floor.
  • Use melee and throwables such as tomahawks against weak monsters to conserve your stones. You can often find daggers and whips with useful brands on them in the early dungeon. These and hunting slings are effective and easy to use even without any relevant weapon skill. Just remember to only fire bullets if you happen to come upon a sling.
  • It's often easy to forget that Passwall exists, but it can be a lifesaver in many situations.
  • When you get access to Lee's Rapid Deconstruction, you should begin to pay more attention to dungeon features and positioning. Features like a metal wall in Lair will make it easier to tear up packs of monsters. You can also use Petrify with LRD to deal direct, AC-ignoring damage to a monster.

History

Prior to 0.19, Earth Elementalists started with 20 stones instead of 30. The increase was to compensate for the fact that sandblast now requires a stone for every cast.

Prior to 0.14, Earth Elementalists only started with 1 level of Spellcasting.
