A very desirable artefact, particularly for Spriggans, Ogres, and Trolls, who often have trouble gaining resistances due to their restricted armour. A wonderful item for an Octopode. One would be hard-pressed to find headgear superior to this: the slight loss in potential AC (over a +2 helmet) is absolutely worth it for the intrinsics this item provides.

Desirability

The hat of the Alchemist[1] is a very desirable artefact for a character with solid AC, providing many useful resistances. The decision is not so clear for low-AC characters, but they will likely want to at least keep it around for certain situations (such as areas with significant risk of harmful mutations).

Species with significant equipment restrictions like ogres, trolls, or spriggans can benefit greatly from the wide range of resistances placed in a single armour slot, but they are also the species most likely to have difficulties getting more AC. An octopode may wish to simply rely on its abundance of ring slots for resistances in lieu of taking this hat's AC penalty.

History

  • In 0.18, the amulet of resist mutation was removed, leaving this artifact as one of the few remaining sources of mutation resistance.
  • Prior to 0.16, it provided only rF+, rC+, rElec, and MR+, but had a +2 enchantment.
