Jellies are obnoxious opponents which introduce the player to the concept of corrosion, a stackable debuff which inflicts a negative slaying bonus and an AC penalty. These attacks also deal significant amounts of acid damage, though you can reduce this significantly by filling as many armour slots as you can, especially the cloak.
Jellies also consume any ammo fired at them, items they come across, or doors they pass through while wandering the Dungeon. Doing so heals them, and if they consume enough items they'll split, creating a second identical jelly. Although fairly weak, these opponents can destroy valuable items and weaken you for a time.
Tips & Tricks
- When you hear 'a slurping noise', it means a jelly has just eaten something. If you're in the habit of leaving items lying around, consider picking them up for safe-keeping until the jelly situation is taken care of. Fortunately, they can't eat stones, large rocks, or artefacts.
- While jellies will not attack other living monsters, they will happily devour the corpses of the fallen along with whatever they were carrying. Try to kill the jelly before taking out anything else if you want corpses or loot.
- If at all possible, you should fight jellies using ranged attacks to avoid their acid. While they will simply consume ammunition fired into it, they cannot eat spell projectiles; magic is far and away the best means of dealing with them (including summons). Failing that, characters lacking magic can simply throw common stones or large rocks at the jelly, or use weak attack wands that would otherwise go to waste, at the very least softening the jelly up before you engage it in melee.
- Wearing an amulet of resist corrosion or another source of rCorr will greatly reduce the chance of corrosion, as well as the damage you sustain.
