This spell hurls a lethally sharp bolt of crystal.

Much more than merely a more powerful version of Iron Shot, this is the ultimate single target damage spell, found only in the Book of Annihilations. Conjurers of all walks often branch into Earth Magic merely for the sake of this spell and its irresistible damage. The only drawback is its high casting difficulty and its lack of accuracy. At maximum power it deals up to 230 damage, strongly biased towards the average of around 117: 10d22 with a 30% chance of 10d23.

Monster spell

Certain feared monsters in the dungeon can also cast crystal spear, often with the ability to single- or two-shot unprepared adventurers.

monster_spell_damge = 3d(16 + power / 10)
  where power = 12 * monster_hit_dice

For quick reference, the monsters that can cast crystal spear:

creature hit dice damage
Deep elf mage 4 3d20 (3-60)
Erolcha 6 3d23 (3-69)
Ogre mage 10 3d28 (3-84)
Wizard 10 3d28 (3-84)
Roxanne 14 3d32 (3-96)
Deep elf annihilator 15 3d34 (3-102)
Draconian annihilator 15 3d34 (3-102)
Lich 20 3d40 (3-120)
Ancient lich 27 3d48 (3-144)

Artefact

There is also an unrandart known as Lehudib's Crystal Spear, a +6,+6 spear of returning that enhances the wielder's intelligence. In-game, it is unclear whether the weapon inspired the spell or vice versa; in reality, the artefact is a pun on the older spell (according to a comment in art-data.txt).
