Version 0.12: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

This article covers the player species. For the monster, see Naga (monster). For a list of all monstrous nagas, see List of nagas.

Nagas are a hybrid species: Human from the waist up with a large snake tail instead of legs.

They are reasonably good at most things and advance in experience levels at the same rate as Hill Orcs. They are naturally resistant to poisons, can see invisible creatures, and have tough skin, but their tails are relatively slow and cannot move them around as quickly as can other creatures' legs (this only affects their movement rate; all other actions are at normal speed). Their body shape also prevents them from gaining full protection from most armour. A Naga's biggest forte is stealth: Nagas are very good at moving unnoticed. Their tails eventually grow strong enough to constrict their foes in combat.

Every now and then, a Naga can spit poison; the range, accuracy and damage of this poison increases with the Naga's experience level.

Innate Abilities

Preferred Backgrounds

Level Bonuses

  • Nagas gain a random stat increase every 4 levels starting at level 4.
  • Nagas have 20% more HP than average.
  • Nagas have average MP.
  • Nagas gain 5 magic resistance per level.
  • Nagas gain the ability to constrict foes at level 13.

Difficulty of Play

SimpleIntermediateAdvanced

Nagas are a moderately difficult race to play because of the low AC bonus they receive from armor and their poor movement speed. Their low aptitudes for defensive skills don't help, either. However, Nagas are good fighters, have extremely high HP, decent magic resistance, the ability to see invisible, poison immunity, a ranged poison attack, and a passive AC boost that increases with level. They are also extremely stealthy and adept at Poison Magic.
