Petrifying Cloud is a monster-only spell which emits a stream of clouds of calcifying dust. These deal minor damage to anything caught in the initial stream, and will attempt to petrify anything which ends its turn standing in one of the clouds. The higher your level or the HD of the affected monster, the less likely the petrification attempt is to be successful.

Gargoyle players are immune to both the damage and petrification effect, as are all monsters that are immune to petrification.
