A disposable arcane formula inscribed on parchment by a professional scribe or sorceror. Anyone can evoke the power of the arcane formula by reading it out loud, but the nature of that power is not a priori apparent.

Scrolls are consumable items which, when read (command r), provide a wide variety of magical effects (for good or ill). They can be found as randomly generated loot or bought in certain shops. Unidentified scrolls will have gibberish names until you've identified them, either by using them successfully or through use of a scroll of identify. Some scrolls have requirements for use; if you don't meet those requirements, the scroll will be wasted.

Berserk, silenced, and batform characters cannot read scrolls at all, while confusion causes any scroll to function as a scroll of random uselessness. The blurry vision mutation gives you a 20% per rank chance to fail to read a scroll, but this does not waste the scroll.

Scrolls in your inventory may be destroyed by fire or hellfire damage, but conservation can prevent this.

Scroll Identification

Main Article: Identifying Scrolls

Most scrolls, but not all, will auto-identify when read.

Scroll Conservation

Some fire magic will burn and destroy scrolls. The conservation intrinsic reduces the chance of this happening.
