Shadows are undead creatures capable of becoming briefly invisible and increasing their movement speed. If they attack while invisible, they automatically hit you with a stabbing attack that deals 250% normal damage. They can be found in the middle floors of the Dungeon, as well as the Swamp, the Crypt and the Hells (particularly Tartarus). They also show up as the result of some death curses.

Shadows are undead, blue-black creatures found in medium depth dungeon levels. They regenerate quickly and occasionally drain your strength with their melee attacks.

*Since they are undead, Dispel Undead or a weapon of holy wrath will work wonders. If neither are available, hit it at range with non-cold magic or ranged weapons before engaging in melee. Even though the strength drain only kicks in rarely, you should hit hard and end the fight quickly.

*A ring of sustain abilities will make shadows even less frightening.

Tips & Tricks

  • Shadows can deal extreme amounts of damage, considering how early in the game you encounter them. If you see one approaching, pop on a ring of see invisible immediately if you have one available. If not, hitting the thing with Corona will prevent it from going invisible. If no source of negating their invisibility is available, hit them hard and fast while you can still see them.
    • Two notables method for negating invisibility that do not work are Sticky Flame (shadows are insubstantial) and fighting in shallow water (they levitate).

History

Before 0.19, there was an item called the lantern of shadows that could, among other things, summon shadows.

Prior to 0.13, shadows were unable to go invisible, and damaged your strength when they attacked.
