A spell school is the category to which a spell belongs. A spell may belong to more than one school, but spells that belong to one elemental school will never belong to that element's opposition school. The more schools a spell belongs to, the more skill and XP will be needed to train to achieve facility with that spell: spell casting success is based on the average of the spell's schools' skills.

Elemental oppositions

Elemental schools have specific oppositions:

  • Fire Magic opposes Ice Magic, and vice versa
  • Air Magic opposes Earth Magic, and vice versa

Having higher experience in one elemental school means that you will have an -4 aptitude penalty (or malus) when trying to gain skill in that element's opposition school.
