"I met a traveller from an antique land

Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

-Percy Bysshe Shelley, "Ozymandias". 1818.

Statues can be found all throughout the Dungeon. Most of them are harmless, but some contain dangerous traps or actively try to kill you. While each kind of statue behaves in a unique way, they are most easily divided into inanimate statues (which are treated like dungeon features) and animated statue monsters (which will attack you and can be destroyed). Whether animate or not, all statues are completely immobile, and if a statue is capable of attacking you, the game will auto-exclude all tiles in their LOS to keep you from accidentally wandering into danger.

All statues behave much like transparent walls, being a barrier to fire but not visibility; unlike transparent walls, they are not a barrier to reaching or smite-targeted attacks. Hostile statues do not regenerate HP, so even if you are forced to retreat, you may come back and try again to destroy one after you've healed.

Inanimate Statues

Inanimate statues, while unaffected by physical attacks, are susceptible to wands of digging, Lee's Rapid Deconstruction, and Shatter.

  • Granite statues come in a variety of shapes, often resembling dangerous monsters, but pose no risk; at worst they may prevent you from reaching a shop or pile of treasure.
Despite the hardness of the stone, this statue's features have long withered away.
  • Scorch marked granite statues are just like granite statues, except that they are found in areas where flame clouds sporadically appear. They do not actually cause these clouds, so while you can destroy them, doing so accomplishes nothing toward making the area safer.
  • Gravestone.png Gravestones are generally found in special vaults or portal levels (like Zonguldrok's Shrine). If they show up in the main dungeon, it's a sure sign that the undead are wandering the level.
A nameless grave. The question remains: is it the grave that is nameless, or the person who lies in that grave?
An idol of the orc god Beogh.
  • Golden statue.png Golden statues can be found near certain vaults to Gozag Ym Sagoz. They are otherwise indistinguishable from granite statues.
A solid gold statue of a saint.
  • Sarcophagus.png Sarcophagi can be found in The Tomb, The Crypt, and certain special levels. Normally, they behave like granite statues. Sealed sarcophagi, however, can occasionally contain monsters.
An ancient sarcophagus. It appears to be empty.
  • Elephant statue.png Elephant-shaped statues are inanimate lumps of stone occasionally found in the temple on the bottom floor of the Lair. They do nothing until you kill the anaconda in the back of the temple, at which point several of them will come to life and attack you as dire elephants. Be sure to close doors behind you as you explore; this will ensure you only face a few of them at a time.
This worn granite statue depicts an elephant standing guard.
  • Iron statue.png Iron statues are found only in the Iron City of Dis, but are no different from other statues.
A statue of an ancient warrior, festooned with trophies from fallen victims. Some dark substance oozes from the gaps in its visor; surely it must be oil...?
  • Disco ball.png An indestructible weirdly glowing ball can be found in a disco-themed Pandemonium vault.
A floating ball radiating with shimmering light.

Monster Statues

Hostile statues are rare, and most often are found as part of a vault. Most animate statues have considerable elemental resistance and/or immunity as well as complete immunity to magical effects. All can be worn down by physical damage from weapons or spells like Iron Shot or Orb of Destruction; as they are made of brittle substances, Lee's Rapid Deconstruction and Shatter are particularly effective.

8 Pillar of salt.png Pillar of salt- The consecrated remains of an unfortunate demon or undead that suffered the wrath of Zin. Will crumble to nothing shortly.

8 Training dummy.png Training dummy- A weak, fragile statue found only in the Tutorial and a few vaults.

8 Charred statue.png Charred statue- A statue that guards an altar to Vehumet. Casts Throw Flame.

8 Frost-covered statue.png Frost-covered statue- A statue that guards an altar to Vehumet. Casts Throw Frost.

8 Lightning spire.png Lightning spire- An arcane construct that hurls bolts of lightning at passersby. Can be summoned with Summon Lightning Spire.

8 Ice statue.png Ice statue- Commonly found in Ice Caves, these frozen sculptures summon ice beasts and hurl powerful blasts of ice. Vulnerable to fire.

8 Orange crystal statue.png Orange crystal statue- These dangerous statues summon a variety of creatures while keeping up a psychic assault.

8 Warrior statue.png Warrior statue- A statue armed with a melee weapon. Its builders placed it in a location where intruders are forced to walk past it.

Unique Statues

8 Roxanne.png Roxanne- An Earth Elementalist who accidentally turned herself into a statue. She forces her opponents to blink into range of her powerful spells.

8 Wucad mu statue.png The Statue of Wucad Mu - An orange crystal statue carved into the likeness of the famed monk and placed in the center of his monastery. Destroying it stems the flood of ghostly monks assaulting you.

8 Zot statue.png Lunar Statue - A statue set to guard a rare and powerful item in Lehudib's Moon Base. Similar to an orange crystal statue, but also has Lehudib's Crystal Spear and casts far more often.

Retired Statues

8 Silver statue.png Silver statue- Statues that summoned a variety of demons. Replaced by obsidian statues in 0.16.

8 Snail statue.png Snail statue- An idol of Cheibriados that would repeatedly cast Leda's Liquefaction. Removed in 0.13.

8 Spooky statue.png Spooky statue - Eerie statues that guarded certain vaults in The Crypt. Their presence summoned ghosts to attack intruders. Removed in 0.13.

Other immobile monsters

Certain types of plants are immobile and may create movement exclusion zones when discovered, but unlike statues, they are not nonliving and regenerate HP when injured. See list of plants for more details.

History

  • Prior to 0.20, wands of disintegration and Orb of Destruction could destroy mundane statues; wands of digging had no effect.
  • Prior to 0.19, statues weren't stabbable; obsidian & orange crystal statues had no sInv. Also, destroying orcish idols had a chance of causing Beogh to smite you.
  • Prior to 0.15, some statues were extremely vulnerable to wands of disintegration and could be destroyed instantly with one.
