I've playing Crawl on and off since 2008/2009. I've all-runed twice and won several times.

I embrace the DCSS philosophy with a few exceptions, notably that "[sometimes] the naive approach is good enough". If that had been applied to real world combat, the martial arts would never have developed--people would have just been told to learn to fight through experience, and told it wasn't fun to have to pay attention to details. It's true that you don't need to be a rocket scientist to beat Crawl, but details often do make some strategies more viable than others, and dismissing them serves to shield flawed mechanics from criticism.
