Version 0.14: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.
Monsters with this flag can flee at low HP if they are not cornered.
These monsters may flee if their HP is reduced to less than 1/4 of their max HP or less than 20 (whichever is lower). Monsters with less than 8 max HP will never flee. Fleeing monsters will eventually recover and turn to attack you.
Tips and Tricks
You can sometimes position yourself with respect to a fleeing monster in such a way that if they do flee, you can quickly corner them.
History
Prior to 0.14, dragons, drakes, and crabs possessed the Flees flag.
This flag was added in 0.12. Before 0.12, the only monsters which would not flee were those with better than animal intelligence, the undead, plants, and nonliving monsters.
