Version 0.13: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Monster version

Each time the player, or a monster, attacks a spiny monster in melee, there is a chance that the attacker will be hurt for Nd4 (Nd3 if the attacker is a monster) where N is the defender's spiny degree. This damage is reduced by random2(AC/2), but ignores EV.

Player version

Spiny players may hurt attackers with a probability which depends on how many levels of the spiny mutation they have, and the encumbrance rating of their body armour. The amount of damage done is Nd5 - AC - encumbrance_rating/3. Rank1: N=2 Rank 2: N=2 or 3. Rank 3: N=3. It ignores monsters' EV, but is only applied on their first attack per round.
