Monsters with the Eats items flag can devour items on the ground that you haven't seen yet. Artefacts, stones, large rocks, runes, and the Orb of Zot are all immune to this effect.
History
Prior to 0.17, these monsters could eat any item, whether you'd seen it or not.
Prior to 0.2, these monsters could eat artefacts.
