Use this space to plan out combos you think you'll want to attempt over the course of the tournament. Just because one player plans on using a particular god or species doesn't mean you can't use it too (after all, not every character actually ascends). Also, don't feel that you have to attempt these combos in any particular order. When choosing your next game, check the current values of each option and see what's worth the most and seems within your capabilities.

The easy combos are the first to get massively devalued, and the hard combos gain value over time as players churn out MiFi and GrBe wins. As such, the first few days of the tourney should probably be spent cashing in quick wins with the easy melee brutes. Unless, of course, you're brave enough to attempt a Nemelex's Choice. Last year, HilariousDeathArtist earned us some crazy points beating a bunch of those. Your call: go for the low-risk, moderate-reward wins, or the high-risk, high-reward? The latter option even comes with a nice banner!
+
Individual scoring in the tournament is based on a number of things, but the easiest ways to rack up points are as follows:

+
*Win at least two games: Your first two games are rewarded with sizable point bonuses. Try to get at least ascensions before the tourney ends (though more are certainly welcome)
That being said, every win with a combo that hasn't been won yet grants an additional 20 points. That's not exactly a massive bonus, but if you can pull it off, all the better. Keep this in mind when having difficulty choosing a combo; even if a particular easy background might not be worth too much, the 20 points definitely sweetens the pot.
+
*Get a 15 rune win: Collecting runes for the first time are worth a lot more points than in consecutive games. If possible, go for a 15 rune win; the value of the Hell and Pan runes alone will be worth a tidy bundle.

+
*Snipe high value species/backgrounds/gods: The value of a win is very highly dependent on how often your species and background has ascended so far. Winning with the first minotaur of the tournament will be worth a hell of a lot more than winning with the fiftieth. As such, if you haven't won one of the newb-favored species (minotaur, merfolk, gargoyle, vine stalker), backgrounds (fighter, berserker, gladiator), or gods (Okawaru, Trog) early on, you might want to pass up on it. That being said, if you only feel comfortable grabbing a highly valued background using a low-value species, or by playing a low-value god, feel free to do so: when backgrounds get ignored for long enough, cashing in on them can be very worthwhile, even if the species bonus is zero. You can find the current value of species/backgrounds/gods [http://dobrazupa.org/tournament/0.16/species-backgrounds.html here].
You'll eventually want to get all 17 runes, at least once, during the course of the tourney. The first time you pick up any rune, it's worth 30 points. Getting the simple Lair runes is enough to win, but after your second win, the score value of doing so is pretty meager. If you can gather the more difficult runes once or twice, the payoff is well worth it. You'll probably not want to do this if your current species / background choices are worth absurd amounts, but when playing easy characters, consider taking the risk.
+
*Nemelex's Choice: Winning Nem's Choice backgrounds is often risky and difficult, but pulling it off grants a very sizable prize. If you see a combo pop up that you know you can win, give it a shot ASAP. Only the first seven winners get rewarded, so it might be worth ignoring them if there's already a few wins registered. There are other banner rewards available; feel free to attempt them, but don't expect them to be easy.

+
*Dabble or delve into a Ziggurat: You can earn a chunk of points by entering a Ziggurat and escaping alive. At some point in the tournament, try to make some progress in at least one. Reaching the bottom of it has the best payout by far, but without the proper build, doing so is likely to get you killed (and cost you all the points a win can earn you).
Killing player ghosts is worth a couple points, which is always nice. Killing players with ''your'' player ghosts, however, is far better. Unfortunately, I'm not really certain of any particularly good ways of optimizing a character for post-death player trolling. Any suggestions?

*Ranged weapon users are nearly harmless in death. If you are certain you're about to die, swap out that bow for the executioner's axe in your pack so that you'll have a fighting chance at preventing others from success! The same goes for potions of resistance: in death, you'll keep all those lovely resistances permanently.

*Oftentimes, melee goons don't bother with spells; in spite of the advantages they offer, they're a bit of a hassle to cast, especially when your spell power's so low. Any recommendations on good spells for every melee brute to know that actually helps rather than hinders in death? [[Haste]] seems the obvious choice, and you only need spell failure down to 49% for it to be available to your player ghost. This even applies to Chei followers, as ghosts don't really care about piety.

As such, the first few days of the tourney should probably be spent cashing in quick wins with the easy builds (click [http://dobrazupa.org/tournament/0.14/species-backgrounds.html here] to see which species, backgrounds, and gods saw the most ascensions last tournament).

Of course, you might be brave enough to attempt a Nemelex's Choice. Last year, HilariousDeathArtist earned us some crazy points beating a bunch of those. Your call: go for the low-risk, moderate-reward wins, or the high-risk, high-reward? The latter option even comes with a nice banner! Of course, Nemelex combos are announced throughout the tournament, so you may wish to only attempt those after cashing in the easy ones. Your call.

  • Nemelex's Choice: Winning Nem's Choice backgrounds is often risky and difficult, but pulling it off grants a very sizable prize.
