Hi Dan,

I plan on starting the process of updating the wiki to the current trunk (0.14ish as of this writing). I don't know how to make the wiki understand that .14 is not a future version. Can you convince it for me? Feedmeacat Oct 4 2013

NO, no, don't do that! The game's kind of awkward in that it has official releases, beta versions that will soon be official, and trunk, which contains stuff that may or may not be official ever. We keep pages at the official release version only (a lot of the players who use the wiki are those who play offline, and 0.12 is still the most recent thing a lot of them have played), and use the History section of pages to include both stuff that once was and stuff that soon will be. PLEASE don't just start dumping everything from History into the main pages! We'll be doing that up to 0.13 once it's out of beta, but I don't believe that's happening just yet. --MoogleDan (talk) 23:03, 5 October 2013 (CEST)
Okay! It seems that 0.13 has come out of beta. Are we clear to go on those updates? (By the way, after I posted here and before I saw your response, I had a rather long and involved and excessively in-depth conversation about what exactly stable vs beta vs trunk meant with the crawl dev IRC, and I felt silly about posting this here, and then classes started and I forgot this existed for a couple weeks... so we've come full circle. Sorry to alarm you) --Feedmeacat (talk) 21:39, 17 October 2013 (CEST)
Oh good, I was wondering where you ran off to and was worried my response had scared you away. Anyway, if you'll check this page you'll see everything that needs to be updated for 0.13. Most of us here have been caught up in the tournament and have pretty much neglected our duties, but once that's done we'll be back on the job. In the meantime, if you feel like updating some of those issues, definitely feel free and thank you! And if you're competing, good luck out there :D --MoogleDan (talk) 02:32, 18 October 2013 (CEST)

Hi Dan, plz have a look on Potion of experience and find out why File:SampleScreenForPotionOfExperience.jpg that I just uploaded won't appear. -- Bwijn 15:35, 21 February 2013 (CET)

The image is showing up on my screen, but as a thumbnail. The image link you're using includes, "|thumb=SampleScreenForPotionOfExperience-thumbnail.jpg"; if you remove that, it should show up at full size.

--MoogleDan 15:41, 21 February 2013 (CET)

Oops, I forgot about emptying the page cache. - Do you know crawl wiki image parameters to increase the size of the SampleScreenPic without blowing it up to full size? It should be readable. It's too tiny now. -- Bwijn 16:27, 21 February 2013 (CET)
I'm honestly pretty clueless about that sort of thing : / I'd suggest looking for another page that does a similar thing and stealing the code from that, or possibly asking CommanderC. He's got a much better grasp of the technical stuff than I do. --MoogleDan 16:34, 21 February 2013 (CET)

Deleting Pages

Hey Dan, I was wondering how to delete pages. I recently merged the Breathe Frost (and other elements) pages into Draconian breath attacks, and removed all text on the old pages, thinking that would delete them. Apparently, it didn't :P PS. I looked for it in the help section, but the page (like many other help pages) doesn't seem to exist. Are all those pages planned? I'd be fine with writing some of them --Lokkij 21:43, 8 April 2013 (CEST)

Only admins can permanently delete pages. If you want a page to be deleted, you can put Template:Delete on the page to mark it for deletion. MoogleDan or one of the other admins will then delete it when they come around. Often, however, pages that are merged and candidates for deletion are good candidates for redirects. For example Breathe Frost would be a good candidate for being redirected to Draconian breath attacks.
As for the help sections, they are somewhere on the new or old wiki but they haven't been updated in a while. You can definitely work on those pages if you like! --Flun 21:49, 8 April 2013 (CEST)
To prevent people from vandalizing the place too badly, we restrict deletion rights to the site admins. If you'd like to suggest the deletion of a page, just put a { {delete} } on the page (without the extra spaces) and we'll look into taking it down. One recommendation I have for this situation is that, instead of deleting the pages, we make them into redirects. That way, someone looking for an ability under its actual name won't find a dead end. We do delete things occasionally, but redirects are almost always the best approach.
As for the page you made, that looks like a good start, and much more useful than the pretty blatantly incorrect stub pages you're replacing :P I'd suggest adding the flavour text and tile icon next to each one, and damage details would be useful, but aside from that it's a solid arrangement. --MoogleDan 21:53, 8 April 2013 (CEST)

Regarding new images

So I was looking at the recent changes log, and noticed you did a thing where you uploaded the new image for royal jelly (under a different file name from the current one), deleted the old image, then moved the new image to the old file name. You do know you can just hit the "upload a new version of this file" option to take care of that in one step, right?

Plus, doing that leaves the old image in the image's history, which is handy for people like me who like adding to the Retired Artwork page. --spudwalt (talk) 00:02, 2 September 2013 (CEST)

Don't worry; if it had been a REAL old image, I would have done the Retired Artwork page step myself! I just did that when I realized that our royal jelly item image was pulling a dupe of the TRJ monster image. Nothing was actually lost. As for the multi-step process involved, I actually haven't fiddled with those tools too much; I'll give 'em a go once 0.13 lands and we have a mountain of artwork to move about. --MoogleDan (talk) 05:37, 3 September 2013 (CEST)

online comments

Sorry I haven't responded to your comments while online -- I tend to concentrate on the game, and I don't generally notice the little green text in the corner saying I have new messages. --spudwalt (talk) 04:29, 14 October 2013 (CEST)

It's perfectly fine, no harm done. Sorry for vanishing last night! My internet connection went spotty and I had to crash anyway. --MoogleDan (talk) 13:50, 14 October 2013 (CEST)

0.14 update project progress

What do you think about crossing out finished stuff on Current_projects/0.14_update_project to track the progress and add more motivation to finish it quickly? -- Derrek (talk) 20:58, 29 April 2014 (CEST)

I think it's an excellent way to track progress, and one which I have admittedly been ignoring :P I'll go through there later on and slash out what I've updated. Thanks for reminding me that that list exists! --MoogleDan (talk) 21:05, 29 April 2014 (CEST)

Flavour messages

Hello, please take a look at the discussion here, and tell what you think about it. -- Derrek (talk) 19:44, 26 May 2014 (CEST)

Character guides?

Hi MoogleDan. Can I ask? What became of your character guides? If memory serves, you had a few. Didn't you have a nice one on Centaurs? I was specifically looking for that when I realized I can't find any of em. --Buddy23Lee (talk) 23:39, 10 June 2014 (CEST)

I had a centaur one and a gargoyle one up for a while, true, but I eventually decided to drop them. They're both very easy species to play, so it's not like I'm depriving the world of any critical information here. Beyond that, I've largely stopped playing, so keeping them up to date would've been a hassle, and I started drawing flack from some of the nastier members of the Crawl community for some of the less optimal advice I gave. Honestly, it just wasn't worth the grief. --MoogleDan (talk) 02:03, 11 June 2014 (CEST)
Geeze, that's kinda rough, and a little disappointing, but I guess understandable. Clearly, you put in more than your share of good work here anyway. As someone who banks on giving less than optimal advice I think you should forget those mooks. A guide can be written with a spirit toward casual, fun gameplay and not just pure power gaming or something, but I digess. --Buddy23Lee (talk) 10:06, 11 June 2014 (CEST)
I think by this point I've updated every page on the Wiki multiple times. In a sense, the whole thing is my guide :P I think I'll settle for critiquing new guides that show up and locking away the obsolete ones until the errant writers show up and fix 'em. --MoogleDan (talk) 20:33, 11 June 2014 (CEST)
On that note, thanks for your hard work on vastly improving my Gargoyle guide. That is much appreciated! Majang (talk) 11:11, 5 August 2014 (CEST)
No worries : ) I usually prefer to stay out of character guides, as I figure the author should be the one to adjust anything, but I liked the build and thought the Dig issue was small enough that you wouldn't mind me chopping it out. Keep up the good work! --MoogleDan (talk) 23:01, 5 August 2014 (CEST)

Crawl Wiki IRC

Is anything official yet? I've been hanging out in the one listed on the tournament page, but I haven't seen anyone, so I'm guessing it's outdated.--Nabalzbhf (talk) 21:46, 28 August 2014 (CEST)

It's not outdated. We just haven't started using it yet because the tournament hasn't started yet. I'm actually in there now, but you don't seem to have noticed me yet... Anyway, hopefully you'll either read this or see those messages or something... --MoogleDan (talk) 22:23, 28 August 2014 (CEST)

Tournament banner help needed

Hi Dan,
I can't catch the meaning behind this tournament banner description : "The Prophet I: Reach the Lair of Beasts with an Invocations title." As a very experienced player you are probably able to explain it to me. I looked into banner winner character dumps but couldn't find a convincing hint. -- Bwijn (talk) 20:02, 2 September 2014 (CEST)

Are you familiar with the skill titles system? All you have to do is reach the specified point with an Invocations-based skill title. It's easy, assuming you use a god who benefits from Invocations skill (I suggest Qazlal). --MoogleDan (talk) 20:07, 2 September 2014 (CEST)
Gosh, I always thought these skill titles were just attributed flavours and had no practical use at all. Now at least the tournament connects them to something. Still not many claimed that banner. Seems like I was by far not the only not to understand the connex. -- Bwijn (talk) 23:23, 2 September 2014 (CEST)
Most of the time they're pretty meaningless, but the third rank of it has some impact. Winning three characters focusing in Invoc more than anything else, and with three different gods, is a bit of a challenge. --MoogleDan (talk) 23:38, 2 September 2014 (CEST)

No file upload possible - why?

I've tried in vain to upload a screenshot to give proof of an observation. It didn't work. I tried it 2 times. Got the error message: No directory „mwstore://local-backend/local-public/0/03“ could be made. As you are one of the most eager admins of this wiki I ask you: Do you eventually know anything about possible causes? How could this be renormalized? -- Bwijn (talk) 16:43, 22 February 2015 (CET)

We're aware of the problem, but have little ability to fix it. The one individual with access to the server has been informed of the problem, but we haven't heard back yet. I'll send another reminder to him to get on it... --MoogleDan (talk) 21:24, 22 February 2015 (CET)

New tiles directory

Yaaaaay, we finally have an updated link to the tiles directory! Now I can finally update some of those old, out-of-date tiles! --spudwalt (talk) 23:49, 11 March 2015 (CET)

I wish. The site's file upload tool is still broken. But yeah, when I stumbled across that link while wandering the Tavern, I figured you'd be excited about it :P Hopefully it'll be online soon... --MoogleDan (talk) 12:51, 12 March 2015 (CET)

A little sorry note ^^'

Hey I'm sorry I never answered your posts on my personal page, I just discovered that I had a personal page, so I wanted to apologize for that. I'll try my best not to put incorrect information again, and thank you for your vigilance ! --Fingolfin (talk) 03:16, 13 April 2015 (CEST)

Oh! No worries, these things happen. You've been active for a while now and your posts are absolutely welcome! Please don't stress over one little mix-up. --MoogleDan (talk) 06:54, 13 April 2015 (CEST)
Thanks I'll do my best. --Fingolfin (talk) 10:17, 13 April 2015 (CEST)
