Zot is the powerful gnome wizard responsible for the construction of the Orb of Zot and the entire Dungeon which guards it. Although often referenced in-game, he never makes an appearance, and cannot be encountered in any way. Whether he is alive, dead, undead, or other is never answered; he serves merely as a colorful character in the Dungeon Crawl back story:
