This aut penalty occurs before the effect of the scroll. If you are using a targeted scroll (e.g. a scroll of blink) and cancel it using ESC, you will forfeit the time spent and the effect will not take place. Note that the normal 10 aut length for reading and using a scroll does not apply; if you have Rank 3 of this mutation, then it will only take 30 auts in total to read and use a scroll.
Prior to 0.16, this mutation gave a 20%/40%/60% chance to fail all attempts to read books or scrolls.
