| This scroll reveals the nearby surroundings of one who reads it. It is not strong enough to see the interior of rooms sealed with secret doors; one needs Traps and Doors skill for that. |
Reading a scroll of magic mapping reveals much of the map of the current level. This includes some parts of floors which are only accessible via secret doors or digging, or can show you where the entrance to a labyrinth or bazaar is located so that you can go there before the entrance disappears. On dangerous levels, magic mapping gives you advance knowledge of where the corridors and stairs are in case you need to escape.
Magic mapping will not work in labyrinths or the Abyss. Using it on a floor where you've already mapped everything will leave you "momentarily disoriented", but this is harmless.
History
Prior to 0.10, this scroll would not detect secret doors.
