The new version of ''Crawl'' is nearly here, and with it comes another ''Crawl'' tournament, lasting from April 11 - 27.

There will likely be a new ''Crawl'' tournament coming soon, though I don't believe official dates have been set. How much interest is there in a CrawlWiki team running again? I personally could go either way on it. Post your feedback here!

We've been Ashenzari's Archivists the last two years running. Unless anyone has any particularly hilarious alternative suggestions, I figure we'll just keep the name. All opposed?

The easier combos will rapidly lose value over the course of the tournament. Minotaurs/Gargoyles/Vine Stalkers, fighters/gladiators/berserkers, and Okawaru/Trog points will likely be worth much more if they're a first win for you than a final.

As always, the easy combos are the first to get massively devalued, and the hard combos gain value over time as players churn out MiFi and GrBe wins. As such, the first few days of the tourney should probably be spent cashing in quick wins with the easy melee brutes. Unless, of course, you're brave enough to attempt a Nemelex's Choice. Last year, HilariousDeathArtist earned us some crazy points beating a bunch of those. Your call: go for the low-risk, moderate-reward wins, or the high-risk, high-reward? The latter option even comes with a nice banner!

That being said, getting your first and second wins are worth a bundle. Above all else, try to get at least two wins in the bank before the tournament ends! If you're having trouble, there's no shame in playing species, backgrounds, and gods that have already been played. I personally feel that CeHu of Trog, Oka, or Makhleb is about as easy a game as you can play.

You'll eventually want to get all 15 runes, at least once, during the course of the tourney. The first time you pick up any rune, it's worth 30 points. Getting the simple Lair runes is enough to win, but after your second win, the score value of doing so is pretty meager. If you can gather the more difficult runes once or twice, the payoff is well worth it. You'll probably not want to do this if your current species / background choices are worth absurd amounts, but when playing easy characters, consider taking the risk.

Any new runes are worth 30 points, so it is worth winning a 15 runer with a strong combo. Simply getting the Pan and Hell runes for the first time will give you 240 points. If you've already gotten two wins, this is an excellent way to keep racking up the score.

Killing player ghosts is worth a couple points, which is always nice. Killing players with ''your'' player ghosts, however, is far better. Unfortunately, I'm not really certain of any particularly good ways of optimizing a character for post-death player trolling. Any suggestions?

*Ranged weapon users are nearly harmless in death. If you are certain you're about to die, swap out that bow for the executioner's axe in your pack so that you'll have a fighting chance at preventing others from success!
Recommended branch order (from elliptic): Lair -> D:12 -> Orc -> D:15 -> S:4 -> maybe other S:4 -> get rune -> Vaults:4 -> maybe get second rune -> Depths:5 -> get three runes -> Zot

*Oftentimes, melee goons don't bother with spells; in spite of the advantages they offer, they're a bit of a hassle to cast, especially when your spell power's so low. Any recommendations on good spells for every melee brute to know that actually helps rather than hinders in death? [[Haste]] seems the obvious choice, and you only need spell failure down to 49% for it to be available to your player ghost...

Advice

As always, the easy combos are the first to get massively devalued, and the hard combos gain value over time as players churn out MiFi and GrBe wins. As such, the first few days of the tourney should probably be spent cashing in quick wins with the easy melee brutes. Unless, of course, you're brave enough to attempt a Nemelex's Choice. Last year, HilariousDeathArtist earned us some crazy points beating a bunch of those. Your call: go for the low-risk, moderate-reward wins, or the high-risk, high-reward? The latter option even comes with a nice banner!

Killing player ghosts is worth a couple points, which is always nice. Killing players with your player ghosts, however, is far better. Unfortunately, I'm not really certain of any particularly good ways of optimizing a character for post-death player trolling. Any suggestions?

IRC Chat

I've created a webirc channel ##crawlwiki for us that we can chat in from your browser (click the link to join). I'll also be hanging out in ##reddit-roguelikes when playing. --Flun (talk) 23:48, 10 October 2013 (CEST)

Brave Attempts or Glorious Splats

Only the wins are easy to find, so I looked up of the longer played characters who didn't find the orb.
