Version 0.30: This article is up to date for the latest stable release of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
A beautiful rainbow of colour and motion trapped within a delicate crystal on a thin silver chain. Listening carefully, one can hear the distant echo of a thousand dreams from all corners of reality, their melody giving a warm sense of safety.

If the user takes a fatal blow, the dreamshard necklace shatters.[1]. The necklace also has a 50% chance to shatter if the wearer loses 80% or more of their current health in a single hit. The necklace will not activate if the user is under the effects of Death's Door. If the necklace shatters this way, it won't drain you.

When the necklace shatters, several effects happen:[2]

  • The triggering blow is negated and the user is healed for anywhere between 50% and 100% of their maximum HP
  • Shadow Creatures is cast, creating several floor-appropriate allies
  • A bank of fog is created

The dreamshard necklace[3], akin to the amulet of life saving present in other roguelikes, is an incredibly useful artefact. It is the ultimate escape item, though it continuously occupies the amulet slot (in place of amulets that already could've saved your life, like an amulet of regeneration or reflection), inflicts drain on a regular unequip, and is only usable once. While it is mistake insurance, please make sure you've tried everything else, first.

Despite already having multiple lives, felids still receive a benefit from this amulet, as it will save them from experiencing the XL reduction from an actual death.

  • In 0.31, the dreamshard necklace will only trigger if you'd reach 0 HP. It will leave you at 1 HP and protect you for your next turn. It will also gain the Acrobat property, lose *Drain, and won't shatter after being triggered.
  • The dreamshard necklace was added in 0.28.
