Plate armour is one of the best armors in the game as far as AC goes, and it is commonly available; you are virtually guaranteed to find at least one by the time you've cleared out the Orcish Mines. While gold dragon armour or crystal plate armour both have better AC and useful resistances, heavy fighters will likely use a suit of this for their early and mid games. A good randart plate armour may be useful for the entire game, and they are not uncommon.

It takes 11 turns to wear or remove plate armour.

Desirability

Plate armour is generally considered pretty good. Branded and even randart plate mails are common, and if found with useful properties (such as fire resistance), such armours can serve for the entire game. At the very least, heavy fighters will want this armour for their early- and mid-games, and those who intend to take up some support spellcasting may in fact prefer it to gold dragon armour or crystal plate armour, whose encumbrance ratings make spellcasting far more difficult.

History

Prior to 0.10, plate armour was known as plate mail.
