Version 0.34: This article is up to date for the latest stable release of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
It empowers the wearer's necromancy spells and improves their success rate, but imposes a health cost for other magic.

The death ego can be found on heavy body armour (scale mail or heavier). It provides a spell enhancer to Necromancy and halves the raw failure rate of Necromancy spells, but causes non-Necromancy spells to cost HP equal to their MP cost. It is evil and hated by the good gods.

The failure rate modifier is equivalent to the boost going from 0 to 5 levels of wizardry. This is not considered wizardry, but stacks independently with wizardry.
