Version 0.12: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.

Fountains are a Dungeon feature often found near shops, altars, and some vaults. By standing over one and pressing q, you can drink from it. The exact effects of doing so depend on the type of fountain.

Fountain of Clear Blue Water

Press 'q' to drink from this fountain. Not that it would have any effect, though...

Fountain.png The most common fountain, drinking from one has absolutely no effect, other than a 5% chance of drying up the fountain. Alternatively, casting the Summon Elemental spell on a clear blue water fountain will create a water elemental, always drying up the fountain in the process.

Clear blue fountains count as a water tile, and may occasionally house aquatic enemies (though they are too shallow to cause merfolk characters to change form).

Fountain of Sparkling Water

Press 'q' to drink from this magic fountain. Expect magical effects, as long as it's still magic.

Sparkling fountain.png Much rarer than a clear blue water fountain, drinking from it will give you a random potion effect, according to the following table:

Fountain effect Probability
Potion of water* 42.4%
Potion of curing 3.6%
Potion of heal wounds 3.6%
Potion of speed 3.6%
Potion of might 3.6%
Potion of agility 3.6%
Potion of brilliance 3.6%
Potion of levitation 2.7%
Potion of invisibility 2.5%
Potion of magic 1.8%
Potion of restore abilities 1.8%
Potion of resistance 1.8%
Potion of berserk rage 1.8%
Potion of gain strength 0.4%
Potion of gain dexterity 0.4%
Potion of gain intelligence 0.4%
Total good potions 35.2%
Potion of decay 4.4%
Potion of mutation 3.6%
Potion of degeneration 2.9%
Potion of poison 2.5%
Potion of slowing 2.5%
Potion of paralysis 2.5%
Potion of confusion 2.5%
Potion of strong poison 1.8%
Total bad potions 22.7%

* Potions of water were removed in 0.12, but their effect is still available here.

After you drink from it, a sparkling fountain has a 10% chance of drying up. If that does not occur, there's then a 20% chance of it permanently becoming a fountain of clear blue water. Xom is entertained any time you drink from a sparkling fountain and receive some effect other than that of a potion of water. The presence of the potion of mutation adds greatly to the risk involved.

Fountain of Blood

Press 'q' to drink from this fountain, if you absolutely wish to.

Blood fountain.png Usually only found in special vaults, these are primarily of interest to vampires, though carnivorous characters may also make use of them. Drinking from one has the same effect as drinking a potion of blood. The fountain has 33% chance of drying each time you drink from it.

Dry Fountain

A dried-up fountain that has seen better days.

Dry fountain.png If you drink from a fountain too many times, it will become a dry fountain. Other times, fountains are simply generated dry.

History

Prior to 0.12, fountains dried by the player would eventually flow again given enough time (1% chance every 20 turns), becoming whatever kind of fountain they were beforehand.
