0.15 Crawl Tournament

There will likely be a new Crawl tournament coming soon, though I don't believe official dates have been set. How much interest is there in a CrawlWiki team running again? I personally could go either way on it. Post your feedback here!

I've started a new job so I don't have much free, but I might be able to put in a win in or two. =) --Flun (talk) 01:16, 8 August 2014 (CEST)
I'll pass. I don't like the last versions of the game. Good luck with the tournament. --CommanderC (talk) 16:26, 9 August 2014 (CEST)
I wouldn't object to taking another crack at a tournament, if enough other people wanted to join in. --spudwalt (talk) 00:20, 12 August 2014 (CEST)

We've gotten 6 volunteers! I'd say we have a proper team here.

THE ROSTER

Linking Up Profiles

If things are like the last tourney, make sure to put # TEAMCAPTAIN moogledan on the first line of your 0.15 .rc file. Doing so will link you up to our clan. Of course, that brings up the bigger issue of what we're calling ourselves. Any proposals from you guys, or shall we stick with the traditional name?

Advice

The easy combos are the first to get massively devalued, and the hard combos gain value over time as players churn out MiFi and GrBe wins. As such, the first few days of the tourney should probably be spent cashing in quick wins with the easy builds (click here to see which species, backgrounds, and gods saw the most ascensions last tournament).

Of course, you might be brave enough to attempt a Nemelex's Choice. Last year, HilariousDeathArtist earned us some crazy points beating a bunch of those. Your call: go for the low-risk, moderate-reward wins, or the high-risk, high-reward? The latter option even comes with a nice banner! Of course, Nemelex combos are announced throughout the tournament, so you may wish to only attempt those after cashing in the easy ones. Your call.

You'll eventually want to get all 17 runes, at least once, during the course of the tourney. The first time you pick up any rune, it's worth 30 points. Getting the simple Lair runes is enough to win, but after your second win, the point value of doing so is pretty meager. If you can gather the more difficult runes once or twice, the payoff is well worth it. You'll probably not want to do this if your current species / background choices are worth absurd amounts, as prancing through Hell and Pandemonium is something of a gamble, but when playing easy characters, consider taking the risk.

Killing player ghosts is worth a couple points, which is always nice. Killing players with your player ghosts, however, is far better. Unfortunately, I'm not really certain of any particularly good ways of optimizing a character for post-death player trolling. Any suggestions?

  • Ranged weapon users are nearly harmless in death. If you are certain you're about to die, swap out that bow for the executioner's axe in your pack so that you'll have a fighting chance at preventing others from success!
  • Oftentimes, melee goons don't bother with spells; in spite of the advantages they offer, they're a bit of a hassle to cast, especially when your spell power's so low. Any recommendations on good spells for every melee brute to know that actually helps rather than hinders in death? Haste seems the obvious choice, and you only need spell failure down to 49% for it to be available to your player ghost...

Planned Combos

Use this space to plan out combos you think you'll want to attempt over the course of the tournament. Just because one player plans on using a particular god or species doesn't mean you can't use it too (after all, not every character actually ascends). Also, don't feel that you have to attempt these combos in any particular order. When choosing your next game, check the current values of each option and see what's worth the most and seems within your capabilities.
