This amulet protects its wearer from mutations, although not infallibly so. |
Wearing an amulet of resist mutation gives the wearer a 90% chance of resisting mutations from most sources, and reduced or no resistance to the following:
- Mutations caused due to magic contamination are only resisted 50% of the time.
- Potions of beneficial mutation ignore this amulet entirely.
- Any bad mutations inflicted by offending Jiyva ignore this amulet entirely.
As one of the few sources of mutation resistance available to any character, amulets of resist mutation are extremely desirable, particularly when exploring the Realm of Zot, the Abyss, the Slime Pits, and the extended game. These areas have by far the largest concentration of enemies capable of inflicting mutations upon you, and this is a situation where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure: potions of cure mutation are very rare, very expensive, and unreliable when you've accumulated more than a few mutations.
Characters who tend to Haste, Invisible, and/or Controlled Blink often may also wish to keep one on hand, as it's easy to overuse these spells and wind up with dangerous levels of magic contamination. Even though the amulet is significantly less effective at preventing mutations from this source, it's still far better than nothing.
Due to the near-permanence of mutations and the fact that some mutation sources can appear suddenly and with little warning, an amulet of resist mutation is a good choice of item to wear for general usage, especially if you can find an artefact one with other useful features. That being said, don't be afraid to swap it out for another amulet when the need arises.
