Shout
Shouting is an ability available to every player and most monsters. It creates a noise with a default loudness of 12.[1] Players can shout by pressing t, then t again. It is not possible to shout when silenced.
Strategy
Shouting is roughly as loud as the loudest melee attacks, and roughly half as loud as a scroll of noise. Keep in mind that in some branches, sounds such as shouting may travel more or less distance. More information can be found in the noise article.
A player might shout to lure a few monsters from a group, although doing so from the wrong position bring an army down on you (e.g., don't shout with multiple unknown areas with no retreat path). Like most in-game tactics, the benefits of shouting are situational. It is rarely done if aiming to get sleep stabs, but is relatively safe on stairs due to the retreat option stairs provide.
Monsters will often shout the moment they become aware of you; if you're concerned about the possibility of reinforcements, you may wish to retreat from enemies that shout near unexplored areas, luring the shouter away from anything that may have heard its cry. Also, bear in mind that your attacks and spells are often noisy in and of themselves.
Note that the other commands accessed through the t menu do not make noise.
History
- Prior to 0.19, ally commands weren't silent. Also, the player couldn't command allies while Silenced.
