Cloaks are pieces of armour that fill the cloak slot. They take 2 turns to equip or remove, and can be enchanted up to +2. Cloaks also provide excellent protection against acid. Normally when you're splashed with acid, the damage you take increases for every empty equipment slot. A cloak, however, reduces the chance of that happening per slot to 50%.
Egos
Cloaks can normally have the following egos:
- Poison resistance: Grants poison resistance
- Magic resistance: Grants +30 magic resistance
- Preservation: Provides conservation and resist corrosion
- Darkness: Evoke to become invisible (increases metabolism)
Only found in some vaults (notably Ice Caves):
- Cold resistance: Grants cold resistance
Elven and dwarven cloaks exist. Elven cloaks grant any character a bonus to stealth.
Strategy
If you are wearing a cloak, it takes an extra four turns to put on or take off body armour: two to remove the cloak, then take off or put on the armour, then two more to put the cloak back on. This is done automatically by the game when changing armours. To minimize turn count while wear-testing armour, manually remove the cloak first to keep the game from wasting time reequipping it repeatedly. If your cloak is cursed, you cannot change body armour: you must uncurse it first.
If you still need a decent cloak in the late game, the Realm of Zot can be a good place to search, as all Draconians have cloaks with a decent chance of enchantments and egos. At least one cloak of preservation is likely to drop.
