Version 0.13: This article may not be up to date for the latest stable release of Crawl.
This useful magic scroll allows you to determine the properties of any object, and will occasionally allow multiple identifications.
If used on a deck of cards, this scroll will also give away the top card. |
Reading a scroll of identify allows the player to fully identify any items currently in their inventory. It can identify up to three separate items, with the strong probability of only one.

Tips & Tricks
- Don't waste these, the supply isn't unlimited. That said, it sucks to die with an un-IDed defense or escape from whatever killed you. Do your best to identify items by experimentation first, and don't bother ID'ing items that your character wouldn't be able to use anyway. Generally, this will leave you ID'ing jewelry first, and the occasional cursed artifact. "Extra" ID's can be used for odd scrolls or potions, or to get the charges on top-tier wands.
- Identifying a deck of cards reveals both the type of deck and the top card. After the top card is used the next card can be revealed via another identify scroll. If there are scrolls to spare this can be an effective way for a non-Nemelex worshipper to effectively use a valuable Legendary deck.
- Identifying a weapon with an identify scroll when you already know its brand is generally not recommended, since you will identify its enchantment once your weapon skill level is high enough. However, identifying weapons with unknown brands can be useful in order to avoid an unwanted distortion weapon.
- You can press ESC to cancel an identify scroll without using it up, though this only works if you had already identified the scroll.
