The rod of the swarm allows its wielder to summon groups of spiders and insects to his aid, quickly creating a large number of weak allies. While this allows you to effectively swarm dangerous monsters in the early- and mid-game, it comes at a high hunger cost, requires too many MP to cast very often, and generally becomes obsolete once you get into the end game. Although far from useless, you likely won't want to waste your scrolls of recharging upgrading it.
