A large and very strong bear covered in glistening white fur, habituated to cold conditions. Like all ursines, the polar bear will become enraged if badly hurt or frightened.
“The Polar Bear is an animal of tremendous strength and fierceness.iBarentz, in his voyage in search of a north-east passage to China, had proofs of the ferocity of these animals, in the island of Nova Zembla, where they attacked his seamen, seizing them in their mouths; carrying them off with the utmost ease, and devouring them in the sight of their comrades. It is said that they will attack and attempt to board armed vessels, at a great distance from shore, and have sometimes been with much difficulty repelled.” |

Useful Info
Polar bears are the largest of the bears found in the Dungeon, boasting cold resistance, and dealing significantly more damage than black bears. When severely injured, they may go berserk, greatly increasing their threat level. Polar bears are amphibious and easily traverse deep water. They can occasionally be found in the Dungeon and the Lair, but are much more common in the Ice Cave.

Tips & Tricks
- While other bears are mostly pushovers, polar bears do enough damage to deserve some respect.
- Due to their cold resistance, polar bears are immune to Ensorcelled Hibernation. Other Hexes or Mephitic Cloud will work just fine, though.
History
- Prior to 0.27, polar bears were practically immune to fear; they would go berserk when inflicted by fear, ending it in the process. This was because their Berserker Rage is an emergency flag spell. In 0.27, fleeing monsters now use escape flag rather than emergency flag spells, which stopped this behavior.
- Prior to 0.6, polar bears did not berserk.
